Can you sign on to a letter to Sen. Ben Cardin chastising him for trying to destabilize Venezuela?

Friends,

Baltimore Peace Action was greatly disturbed to discover that Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland was working with Senator Marco Rubio to destabilize the Maduro government in Venezuela.  So the group wrote this letter which will be delivered to Cardin’s Baltimore office.  The letter indicates that the group is seeking a meeting.  If you are interested in signing on this letter, please let me know.  We are accepting signatures from non-Marylanders.  If you can represent a group, please do.  Finally, also add your city.  Thanks.

Kagiso, Max

Senator Ben Cardin

Honorable Senator Cardin:

As peace and justice advocates, we recognize that a desperate Trump administration might attack Venezuela, as part of an October Surprise.  We are prepared to oppose such a reckless and illegitimate use of force on another country.

We are of the opinion that President Donald Trump is incompetent, racist, militaristic and incapable of protecting this country from both COVID-19 or climate chaos. Some of us fear that his government is turning fascist.   All of us are terrified that a president without the approval of Congress can launch a nuclear strike.  Regardless, we believe that it is the responsibility of the people of the USA to organize and prevent Trump from doing even more damage to this country and other countries under attack by the Pentagon.  We could produce an endless list of the immoral policies of the Trump administration.

Regardless of anyone’s perspective on the government of Venezuela, it is the right of the people there to decide on that country’s future.  So why did you engage with Senator Marco Rubio to call on the United Nations Secretary General and the European Union to deny the Venezuelan government its right to hold an election on December 6?

We are very upset that you would work with Senator Rubio on such a blatant interference in the affairs of a sovereign country.  We remember well the Nixon-Kissinger plan to overthrow the democratically-elected government in Chile in 1973.  We instead favor a good neighbor policy.

We are baffled that you are participating with the Trump administration’s plan for regime change in Venezuela.  Threatening a country, sanctioning a country and interfering in that country is not constructive in the present situation in which many millions of Venezuelans support the government. Now is the time for dialogue.

This is such an important issue as we approach a presidential election that we request a meeting with you as soon as possible.  A small delegation will meet with you whenever it is convenient.  Thank you for understanding our displeasure with your anti-democratic involvement in this odious engagement with Senator Rubio.  We expect our senators to promote peace, dialogue and respect for all countries.

Peace,
