47] – You are invited to attend A DAY OF SILENCE on Sun., Dec. 4 at Shanti Yoga Ashram, 4217 and 4209 East-West Hgwy., Bethesda MD 20814.  The theme is Pilgrimage to Abadiania, Brazil.  As an expression of gratitude for a recent two-week experience in Abadiania, Vyasa, Lakshmi and Durga would like to share a comprehensive understanding of the possibilities of alleviating the suffering of your loved ones - family, friends, or whomever.  Starting at 9 AM, there will be meditation, prayers and song.  The doors will then close at 10 AM.  See films, share a vegetarian lunch and participate in a closing song at 3:45 PM.  RSVP at 301 654 4899 or shantiyoga2@earthlink.net.  The doors will be reopened at times.

50] – You are invited to the 2011 World AIDS Day Service on Sun., Dec. 4 at 3 PM at Payne Memorial AME Church, 1714 Madison Ave., Baltimore, Maryland 21216.  Her Excellency Tebelelo Seretse, ambassador of the Republic of Botswana to the US, is the guest speaker.

Also featured is Soloist Elder Harriett Noakes, saxophonist, Apostle Matthews Evans, Rafiki Na Dada, South African Gospel Singers, and the spoken word by Ms. Evangeline Kirigwa and Mr. Vincent Green.  There will be light refreshments after the Worship Service.

52] – Contact Malachy Kilbride at malachykilbride at yahoo.com.  He is calling for a demonstration on Sun., Dec. 4 at 4:45 PM to shoe support for Julian Assange, who will be in court on Mon., Dec. 5 to continue his legal quest to resist being sent to Sweden to face possible.  If sent to Sweden, he faces possible extradition to the United States to face espionage charges.  The support demonstration in Washington, D.C. will be held at the Embassy of the UK/British Embassy, 3100 Massachusetts Ave. NW, WDC.  Consider bringing a candle or flashlight.

54] – The PAX CHRISTI-BALTIMORE 2011 ADVENT PRAYER SERIES began on Sun., Nov. 27 with the theme "The Peace That Eludes Us." On Sun., Dec. 4 at 5 PM at the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart Chapel, 1001 W. Joppa Road, Towson 21204, chapel is at Joppa Road at Chestnut Ave., west of Bosley Ave.  Rosemary Thompson of the Murphy Initiative will be the speaker.  A free will offering is requested. 55] – On Sun., Dec. 4 from 5 to 7 PM at Busboys and Poets, 5th & K Sts. NW, WDC, Florence Howe discusses and signs her book, "A Life in Motion: A Memoir" about her audacious life. She created a freedom school during the dangerous days of the civil rights movement, refused to bow to academic heavyweights who were opposed to sharing power with women, and founded a feminist publishing house at a time when books for and about women were few. Sustained by her friendship with iconic writers like Grace Paley, Tillie Olsen, and Marilyn French, she traveled the world as an emissary for women's empowerment.  Call 202-789-2227.

 

56] – On Sun., Dec. 4 from 5 to 7 PM at Busboys and Poets, 14th & V Sts. NW, WDC, check out A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race), a monthly Busboys and Poets discussion series that provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action!
