3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

7] – Witness Against Torture continues its 100 Days Campaign.  Go to www.100dayscampaign.org.   Groups have taken on each week through Apr. 30, and there will be daily vigils at the White House from 11 AM to 1 PM.  As well, there will be organized activities from film screenings to lectures and community meetings.  These activities are designed to mobilize people concerned about torture and keep sustained pressure on our elected officials to close Guantanamo with deliberate speed.  Witness Against Torture will have a team in D.C. for the duration of the campaign and will provide logistical support to all participants.  Call Carmen Trotta at 202 277 9869.           

WAT is looking for people who are willing to risk arrest in D.C. on Thurs., Apr. 30 to call attention to the plight of the 60 men at Guantanamo who have been cleared for release but still languish there. The proposed scenario calls for a 10 AM gathering at the Capitol Reflecting Pool. A procession to the White House will start at 11:15 AM with the 60 risking arrest and another 181 in jumpsuits.  There are still 241 men in Gitmo. RSVP to daloisio at riseup.net.

8] – On Thurs., Apr. 16 at 5:30 PM, there will be a special presentation "Judges Who Make the Law: The Supreme Court and Common Law Tradition" by Arthur Eisenberg, Legal Director of New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU).  He has worked at the NYCLU for more than 35 years. During that time he has been involved in more than 20 cases that were presented to the United States Supreme Court. He has litigated extensively around issues of free speech and voting rights. In recent years, Eisenberg has been increasingly involved in litigation concerning national security and civil liberties. 10] – There will be a showing of CUBA: AN AFRICAN ODYSSEY on Thurs., Apr. 16 at 7 PM at the Solidarity Center, 2011 N. Charles St. Lower Level.  The suggested donation is $ 5. In her ambitious and fascinating documentary, Egyptian-French filmmaker Jihan El-Tahri traces the complicated history of Cuban involvement in Africa.  It began in 1965 when Che Guevara led a band of Cuban fighters in an unsuccessful attempt to help support the struggle for independence in the Congo.  It then moved to the process of freeing the small country of Guinea-Bissau from Portuguese rule and it ended in a long and complicated struggle in Angola. 11] – Goucher College presents a conversation with Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected head of state.  The event in Kraushaar Auditorium starting at 7 PM is free, but tickets must be reserved by calling 410-337-6333 or by emailing boxoffice@goucher.edu.

12] – The Baltimore branch of the Industrial Workers of the World [IWW] meets the third Thursday of the month.  Attend the next meeting on Apr. 16 at 7 PM at Red Emma’s, 800 St. Paul StCall 410-967-2202.

13] – On Thurs., Apr. 16 attend Gaza Calling II... Global Hip Hop for Palestine at Busboys & Poets, 14th & V Sts., NW, WDC. Help raise money for wheelchairs for Palestine's children from 7:30 to 9:30 PM.  The suggested donation is $15.  Go to http://www.pcrf.net/gazacalling.html. 14] – Every 3rd Friday, observe the Iraq Moratoriumhttp://www.iraqmoratorium.com/. On Apr. 17, wear a black ribbon or armband! Hand out ribbons or armbands to others. Wear an anti-war pin. Call your representative and your senators and tell their staff that you expect them to do everything possible to end the war and bring the troops home!  The Capitol Hill switchboard number is 202-224-3121. Write your representative and your senators, as a handwritten letter has even more impact than a phone call. Hit your elected officials where it hurts, with a voided campaign contribution check. Write a letter to your local newspaper. Don't buy gas. Drive 10 MPH under the posted speed limit. Don't shop at all. Put a sign on your lawn or in your window or on your car. Write "Stop the War" or other slogans on the sidewalk in chalk.  Buy toy soldiers, put tags on them that say "Bring Me Home" and leave them in stores, parks, libraries, laundromats, anywhere people will find them. Email friends and family and urge them to sign the Iraq Moratorium statement and to take one of these steps, too.

17] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

18] – There is a peace vigil to support the Congo every Friday, 4 to 6:30 PM at the Rwandan Embassy, 1714 New Hampshire Ave, NW.  Call the Rwandan Embassy at 202-232-2882 and register your concern about Rwanda's aggression towards the Congo.

19] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Apr. 17 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

21] – The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Committee is hosting its latest FILM & SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS VIDEO SERIES. The theme is First Amendment rights.  The next film is THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT [USA, 1996] which will be shown on Fri., Apr. 17 at a private home on a large-screen television.  If interested in seeing the DVD, RSVP to Max at 410-366-1637.

THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT [USA, 1996] Milos Forman, the director, explores the life of pornographic magazine publisher Larry Flynt and his epic court clash with Jerry Falwell.  The film stars Woody Harrelson, Courtney Love and Edward Norton.

Doors open at 7 PM, and the DVD starts at 7:30 PM.  There is no charge, and refreshments will be available.  A discussion will follow.

 

22] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 25] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

26] – EcoFest, taking place in Druid Hill Park on Sat., Apr. 18 from 11 AM to 5 PM, gives the community a chance to interact with a variety of organizations that offer products and services that are environmentally friendly. 27] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., Apr. 18.Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It. --Psalms 34:14." 28] – The United Workers are hosting a B’More Fair to celebrate life, the city and the right to a living wage.  The Fair will be at Carroll Park, S. At 4 PM, the Human Rights Zone March will go to solidarity stops and into the Inner Harbor.  The Inner Harbor was created through public dollars. Once part of a working port, the Inner Harbor has long been at the heart of the city.  So why won’t the city allow the public to demand that workers there get treated with respect, paid a living wage and have their rights to health care and education respected by employers?  Go to www.unitedworkers.org.

29] – On Sat., Apr. 18 from 1 to 3 PM with a mass at 3:30 PM, a symposium Faith, Environment, and the Call to Stewardship – will be sponsored by the Environmental Outreach Committee of the Department for Social Concerns, Archdiocese of Washington. 35] – Every Sunday until Nov. 3, from 4:30 to 6 PM at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Aves., near Barnes & Noble and the Landmark Theaters, there will be a peace vigil organized by Bethesda Friends. Everyone welcome to participate!  

36] – On Sun., Apr. 19, from 5 to 6 PM, there will be an ecumenical peace vigil in Lafayette Park!  You are invited to join the latest in a series of peace vigils designed to give members of Washington area churches--Episcopalians, Methodists, UCC'ers, Presbyterians, Baptists, Mennonites, Quakers, Lutherans, Unitarians, Catholics and all others--a chance to pray together for an end to the tragic war in Iraq. The vigil is a locally organized witness affiliated with Christian Peace Witness for Iraq (CPWI).  The vigil will take place on the third Sunday of the month, at 5 PM, until the war comes to an end.

40] – Witness for Peace is hosting a Rally for Colombia's Displaced on Mon., Apr. 20 at 4 PM at the State Department, 2201 C St NW. 42] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  The next vigil is scheduled for Mon., Apr. 20. Call 410-233-0488.

 

43] – On Mon., Apr. 20 the War Resisters League will discuss War, Prisons & Torture – At Home & Abroad.  This discussion is part of the Witness Against Torture's 100 Days Campaign. Go to www.100dayscampaign.org.

 

44] – A panel discussion and reception will follow the screening on Mon., Apr. 20 at 6 PM at the Letelier Theater at 3251 Prospect St, NW, in Georgetown.  Panelists include Abigail Disney, producer of the film; Dr. Patricia Morris, Executive Director of Peace x Peace; and Matthew Baechtle, ICE special agent who launched the investigation of Chuckie Taylor, son of former Liberian President Charles Taylor.  The panel will also address the civil case Human Rights USA has brought on behalf of victims of human rights violations in Liberia

 

45] – Univ. of Baltimore Merrick School of Business presents an evening with Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus on Mon., Apr. 20 from 6 to 7 PM at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.  Tickets are $10 through Ticketmaster.

 

46] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  The next meeting will be Apr. 20, and the agenda will include the lobbying effort to call for investigation of those who ordered the torturing, Witness Against Torture protest and Earth Day. 47] – On Tues., Apr. 21 the restrictions imposed on Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli whistleblower, are to be lifted allowing him to leave Israel and to speak to non-Israelis. Go to http://www.vanunu.com/.

48] – Register for the Baltimore Homeownership Preservation Coalition’s Forum on foreclosure prevention and mitigation, which takes place on Tues., Apr. 21.  The cost is $15.

50] – There is a meeting of Ecolocity DC every Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM at the EMERGENCE COMMUNITY ARTS COLLECTIVE, 733 Euclid St. NW, WDC 20001.  It is for people who live in, or are interested in making D.C. a transition town starting with an intentional community that will encompass clean energy, freecycle, natural building, organic farming, community salvage, new urbanism, etc. The next meeting will be on Apr. 21. 68] – Sylvie Maunga Mbanga, a human rights lawyer and women’s activist from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is in the DC area waiting for asylum. She works with seven local organizations to end the horrific sexual violence against women in the eastern region of the Congo. She is eager to speak to audiences about her situation and that of the DRC.
