23] – Friends House, 17715 Meeting House Rd., Sandy Spring, MD 20860, hosts a peace vigil every Saturday, 10:30 to 11:30 AM, on the corner of Rt. 108 and Georgia Ave. in Olney, MD.  The next vigil is Apr. 4. Call Chuck Harker at 301-570-7167. 

 

24] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

25] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., Apr. 4. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It. --Psalms 34:14." 26] – On Sat., Apr. 4, there will be a Toxic Tour at noon in Van Meter Circle.  Glenn Ross leads a bus tour of “toxic sites” in Baltimore City that have been victim to environmental injustice. At 2:30 PM, there will be a question and answer session in T Classroom.

At 3 PM in the T Classroom, there will be an examination of Baltimore as an ecosystem by Richard Pouyat, a forest ecologist/soil scientist. At 3:20 PM, Mary Washington, assistant director Baltimore Parks & the Natural Resources Leadership Institute, Parks and People, will showcase the Urban Resources Initiative. At 3:40 PM, John Mello from B'More Green will outline sustainable job training.  At 4 PM, Beth Strommen from the Baltimore City Sustainability Commission will propose planning a sustainable Baltimore. At 5 PM in Huebeck Lounge, there will be an Engaging in Inequalities Dinner.  How does poverty in Baltimore affect the dinner table?

27] – On Sat., Apr. 4 at 1 PM, Global Coalition for Peace invites you to a Peace Meal at 4209 East West Hwy., Chevy Chase, MD 20815.  The program starts with interfaith prayers and possibly songs, followed by blessing of the food ceremony, then the speaker's address along with a hot vegetarian lunch. Park by Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. The site is Metro accessible on Red Line, Bethesda stop. 28] – The Bread and Puppet Theater will perform on Sat., Apr. 4 at 7 PM and at 9 PM at the St. Stephen's Church auditorium, 1525 Newton St. NW, WDC. The suggested donation is from $5 to $10, but no one will be turned away.  The performance is billed as The Lubberland National Dance Company in “27 Dirt-Cheap Dances,” a topical play for these trying times of economic crisis.  There is a need for volunteers to be in the show as performers and musicians!

The rehearsal for the show will be on Apr. 4 from 2:30 to 6:30 PM.  Anyone can participate! No dance, theater or music experience is necessary! RSVP to PuppetUndergroundDC@gmail.com.

31] – There's a new Congress in town, so join Friends Committee on National Committee on Sun., Apr. 5 to learn the ins and outs of lobbying your elected officials. On Mon., Apr. 6 use your new skills by lobbying members of Congress to pursue policies of peace and justice - an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, diplomacy with Iran, smart and sustainable energy and domestic policies that support equality. 32] – Goucher College continues its program on Sun., Apr. 5 at 1 PM in the Geen Community Center. Andrea Smith, who has been prosecuting narcotics crimes for over 25 years, will discuss how the drug trade and its violence has changed over the last three decades and the toll it has taken on Baltimore's urban communities.  This will be followed at 2 PM by City Art: reception & silent auction.  All proceeds will be donated to the Baltimore Algebra Project. 33] – Every Sunday until Nov. 3, from 4:30 to 6 PM at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Aves., near Barnes & Noble and the Landmark Theaters, there will be a peace vigil organized by Bethesda Friends. Everyone welcome to participate!  

34] – The 7th Annual Ric Pfeffer Lecture presents Arun Gupta who will discuss THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE NEW DEPRESSION on Sun., Apr. 5 at 7 PM at the 2640 Space, 27th and St. Paul Sts.  Gupta has been an editor of The Indypendent (New York) since 2000 and was an editor of The Guardian (New York) from 1989-1992. He was active in the anti-apartheid divestment and Central America solidarity movements in the 1980s and studied philosophy, history and mathematics at the University of Maryland. He is currently writing a book on the decline of U.S. hegemony.

Ric Pfeffer, in whose honor this lecture series was established, worked as a lawyer with OSHA at the Department of Labor, where he made notable contributions to worker safety.  The Ric Pfeffer Lecture is a program of Research Associates Foundation.
