19] – Susan Barnett [reelandmealatnewdealcafe@gmail.com] on Mon., Nov. 17 at 6:30 PM wants you to attend Reel and Meal and see How to Start a Revolution. In person, come to the New Deal Café at 113 Centerway (Roosevelt Center) in Greenbelt. To attend online, register at https://tinyurl.com/ReelnMealNov2025
How to Start a Revolution highlights the work of Gene Sharp, who felt social change doesn’t have to be violent. Sharp documented 198 distinct nonviolent tactics, categorized into: protest and persuasion (marches, vigils, leafleting), non-cooperation (boycotts, strikes, refusal to obey laws) and intervention to disrupt the functioning of an oppressive system while minimizing bloodshed. For Sharp, nonviolent resistance works best when it is strategic, disciplined, and widespread, and not spontaneous or disorganized. Success depends on careful planning, unity among participants, and persistence. The film suggests that such tactics that challenged entrenched power, toppled dictators, and made real change across the world are ones we can use here at home. Anyone concerned about civic engagement will find the documentary insightful.
Reel and Meal participants are encouraged to enjoy a plant-based meal during the film to participate in socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, and animal safe lifestyle choices. Outside food is not allowed in the New Deal Café. The Reel and Meal at the New Deal Café is a free monthly film series. Started in September 2007, the idea is to bring audiences together to learn about and discuss social justice, environmental and animal rights issues. She is running for an open House seat in Illinois’s 9th Congressional District, and is the Palestinian-American granddaughter of two Nakba survivors. Kat “strongly supports foreign policy centered on human rights, not the interests of corporations or authoritarian regimes.” Unsurprisingly, Kat has not only spoken about the need for a ceasefire in Gaza and peace for the Palestinian people, but she has done so from the beginning — unlike most of her opponents. She also rightly calls on the U.S. to finally recognize a Palestinian state, observing that “It is not enough to end this war: We must help rebuild Gaza and create a place at the table for the Palestinian people. Peace in the region is impossible when a population is subjected to statelessness, restriction of rights and movement, and systematic dehumanization.”
22] – The Maryland CPUSA [md@cpusa.org] is encouraging you to attend Maryland Peace Action forum on china on Mon., Nov. 17 from 7 to 9 PM at Homewood Friends Meetinghouse, 3107 N. Charles St, Baltimore. Ione speaker is Duncan McFarland who worked closely with Massachusetts Peace Action to oppose the war and occupation of Iraq and is currently a member of MAPA's No War with China committee. Also speaking is Jessie Braverman, the Secretary General of the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) US Chapter and a member of the ICHRP Global Council. ICHRP is a network of organizations outside of the Philippines campaigning in solidarity with the Filipino peoples' struggle for a just and lasting peace. Become a member of Maryland Peace Action by mailing a check for $35 to PO Box 9831, Towson, MD 21284. Visit https://peaceactionmd.org/
This forum is an opportunity to ask questions. Outside of Afghanistan, is China the most repressive country? Why did the Chinese government forced the closing of an independent Chines film festival in New York City? Why is China terrorizing Filipino fishing boats? Why did China end freedom of the press in Hong Kong? Why was Jimmy Lai imprisoned? Does China harvest organs? Why is China holding Uighurs in concentration camps? Why does the Chines government violate basic human rights conventions?
