24] – Rally against Mayor Bowser’s attack on renter rights on Tues., March 18 at 10 AM in front of the Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, WDC 20004. Mayor Muriel Bowser officially introduced the RENTAL Act, a bill that would gut TOPA and tenant protections in D.C. The Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act is a vital right in DC that allows tenants to try to collectively buy a building that goes up for sale or bargain with the new landlord for concessions. Specifically, the RENTAL act would strip TOPA from affordable housing properties and properties built within the past 25 years, and would create a new loophole that would allow landlords to avoid TOPA entirely. The act would also gut eviction protections and make it easier to throw tenants out on the street by speeding up the eviction process, making it harder for tenants to defend themselves in court, and make it easier to evict someone if anyone in their household has been charged with a crime.

This legislation is the result of years of attacks on tenant rights by the landlord lobby and developers. It has been a year since tenants first rallied to stop the attacks on TOPA, and now tenants must again demand an end to this renewed assault. Stomp out Slumlords will be organizing to tell the Council and Mayor to not just oppose the RENTAL Act, but to expand TOPA and tenant protections in DC. Email tenants@mdcdsa.org. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/rally-to-save-topa-2?link_id=4&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-march-7-2025&email_referrer=email_2655314&email_subject=metro-dc-dsa-weekly-newsletter-for-march-14-2025&&

25] – This is a daunting moment in history as we witness the daily attacks on those most vulnerable in society and on our public and societal institutions. Cruelty and lies seem to be having their day; yet, instead of getting overwhelmed with all the horrible things happening in the political sphere, it seems critical to stay focused on the myriad ways people are rising up and helping put wind in the sails of change. The Mercy Justice Team [justice@sistersofmercy.org] on Tues., March 18 at noon ET is holding an event -- Planning Pilgrimages and Network Building' These events will continue each month with the next one on April 15: Front-line Community Collaboration. RSVP at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/pQ-36SFQSJCuzz_CAnjXxQ#/registration

26] – Join the Baltimore Nonviolence Center on Tues., March 17 from 4:30 to 5 PM ET at 33rd and N. Charles Sts. to condemn the invasion of Ukraine and the Trump/Vance team which supports Putin’s war crimes. Putin has destroyed Aleppo and Grozny and has threatened the use of nuclear weapons.  And he knows that Trump appreciates how he got Trump elected in 2016. Rather than support Ukraine, Trump hoped to steal Ukraine’s rare earth minerals.  Let us hope that the European Union will provide further support for the Ukrainian people.
