Baltimore Activist Alert – November 10 – 11, 2024

4] – Barry Lee Burnside, a gaggle of great writers and copy editors are making available “A Bag of Snakes: Selected Writings on Prisons and the Death Penalty by Murphy Davis and Eduard Loring. Edited by Barry Lee Burnside.” Ed indicates the book will be available for sale on April 13, and is asking you to pre-order your copy. Your donation will provide a needed financial boost for the printing costs. The suggested donation is $20 for one copy; and $30 for your copy and an additional copy for a prisoner or someone in need. Any donation is appreciated. More or less you will receive the book. Barry and the team have spent over two years putting this book together. It begins with outlines and notes found in the boxes of materials Murphy left when she ascended. The work is a work of love, and all involved are proud of the fruit borne by seeds nourished in good soil.
To order by postal mail, make your check to Open Door Community. Send it to Open Door Community, PO Box 10980, Baltimore 21234. For any questions, contact David Payne at 404-290-2047 or davidpayne@opendoorcommunity.org.
5] – Another book to consider purchasing is Male Supremacy in the Catholic Church: An Insider’s View by Roy Bourgeois. His new book is both memoir and position-paper, and it makes the case that the Roman Catholic Church is a corrupt system that spits out truth-tellers. The crime he was excommunicated for was attending the ordination ceremony of Janice Sevre-Duszynska in Lexington, Kentucky, in August 2008. The ordination was under the auspices of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests. The Vatican’s response has been to excommunicate any woman who has the audacity to see herself as a priest equal to a male priest. You can purchase a copy from Amazon or by Kindle.
Here are two quotes to contemplate: “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men. She is to keep silent.” – Timothy 1, 2:12-13. “If the patriarchy that dominates the church is not dismantled and women are not treated as equals, the church will continue to diminish and, eventually, die.” – Roy Bourgeois.
6] – A home in Baltimore is for sale on a dead-end street in the Lauraville neighborhood, with three bedrooms, and one bath. The yard backs into a field and then a forest. There is a serene and quiet setting with an abundance of wildlife. The owner will be asking a reasonable amount for the property but it will not be overpriced. Contact her by text only at 443 500 6733. On the text, leave your name and phone number, and she will get back to anyone that reaches out.
7] – Join the Nov. 10-24 National Days of Action to support the Joint Resolution for Disapproval on US Weapons to Israel. There is a call for local nonviolent actions. Stop Arming Genocide, Support the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval on new US weapons transfers to Israel. Organized by Peace Action, Friends Committee for National Legislation, etc. https://www.peaceaction.org/2024/11/01/joint-resolution-of-disapproval-days-of-action/ The Israeli government has received over 50,000 tons of weapons and military equipment from the U.S. since October 2023. As we’ve watched in horror, these weapons have been used to slaughter and displace tens of thousands of Palestinians, and to uphold a brutal siege that is now starving children across Gaza. The Biden administration has recently notified Congress of its intent to authorize another $22.6 billion massive new arms sale to the Israeli government, including billions of dollars in the same kinds of weapons that have already killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza. The potential for U.S. complicity in even more violence and suffering couldn’t be higher. The most recent arms packages announced include: $18.8 billion for 50 F-15 fighter jets and related equipment, $774 million for 32,739 120mm tank cartridges, $61 million for 50,000 high-explosive mortar cartridges and $262 million for 6,500 Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs)
The world has looked on in horror at the U.S.-supported genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza for over a year, and recently, regional escalation of the conflict has metastasized. Millions have protested worldwide, but action is still needed. Although a majority of the public supports an end to US weapons transfers to Israel, Congress and the Administration have not acted to use U.S. leverage to end the slaughter. Congress has the legal power to block this madness. Using a tool called a ‘Congressional Joint Resolution of Disapproval,’ Congress can block some or all of these deadly weapons from pouring into the war in Gaza. In the coming weeks, the United States Senate will hold an unprecedented vote on Joint Resolutions of Disapproval, introduced by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and supported by Senators Welch (D-VT), Merkley (D-OR), and Schatz (D-HI), to stop this new U.S. weapons transfers to Israel. During the National Days of Action, just after the U.S. elections, concerned individuals and organizations will mobilize to say, “Enough is enough. Stop Arming Genocide!”
8] – The Baltimore Ethical Society invites you to the following presentation by Zoom: “The Founding of Ethical Culture.” In the wake of an election that has weighted heavily on us all, Hugh Taft-Morales explores the founding of Ethical Culture. What did Felix Adler regard as the greatest challenges to civilization back in 1876? Why did he think that a new non-theist congregational movement emphasizing deeds more than creeds could best meet those challenges? How might Adler’s “founding address” delivered on May 15, 1876, offer us grounding to stay steady today in these turbulent times. Taft-Morales serves as Leader of the Philadelphia Ethical Society and the Baltimore Ethical Society and is a member of the Ethical Action Committee of the American Ethical Union (AEU).
This takes place on Sun., Nov. 10 at 10:30 AM ET. To get the link, either email president@bmorethical.org or RSVP on Meetup at https://www.meetup.com/bmorethical/events/304144212/
9] – On Sun., Nov. 10 from noon to 6 PM, Jewish Voice for Peace will be hosting a vigil at Homewood Friends Meeting House, 3107 N. Charles St., Baltimore. You're invited to join at any point during the afternoon. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has introduced “Joint Resolutions of Disapproval” to stop our government from sending selected weapons to Israel. On the Children's Day of Action for Palestine, convince Senator Van Hollen to vote YES. Kids and grownups: make a video that can be sent to the Senator, write a postcard, draw or paint a picture. CALL Senator Van Hollen every hour, on the hour, to tell him how we and our neighbors feel about our tax dollars being used for weapons to kill Palestinians. Drop in when you can for community, solidarity, music, teach-ins, conversations, and snacks! Email Nicole Morse <nikkimorse@gmail.com.>
10] –Climate Hawks Vote [info@climatehawksvote.com] needs you on Sun., Nov. 10 from 1 to 3 PM, 3 to 5 PM and 5 to 7 PM ET to support Kirsten Engel’s ballot curing and post-campaign efforts in Arizona’s sixth Congressional District. Ballot curing in Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District is so important to prevent a Republican sweep of Congress, click https://www.mobilize.us/climatehawksvote/event/717867/?emci=fefc8b17-1a9e-ef11-88ce-000d3a98fa6b&emdi=e11afce8-a29e-ef11-88ce-000d3a98fa6b&ceid=13143726
Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District is one of the very, very few districts in the nation where a Democrat could flip a Republican seat. Twenty-seven House races remain uncalled, and control of the House hinges on the results of those 27 races. Arizona allows voters whose ballots are in question to “cure” their ballots – fix an inconsistent signature, so that their ballots can be counted.
