The Bradley Manning Support Network will vigil from 8 to 9:30 AM. Then some supporters will go inside for the hearing. Call 410-366-1637.

61] – Rally to End Censorship in Bahrain on Thurs., July 19 from noon to 4 PM at the embassy of the State of Bahrain, 3502 International Dr. NW. Several months ago people reached out to a prominent human rights activist in Bahrain, Nabeel Rajab, in an effort to cover the violations occurring there. However after they spoke and set a time for an interview, he was promptly arrested. He has since been in and out of jail repeatedly for trying to speak out against the horrors that are happening. Now it’s reached a new level and he has been imprisoned for his tweets!

"On July 9, 2012, the Fifth Minor Criminal Court in Manama sentenced Rajab to three months imprisonment for allegedly “insulting” the people of Muharraq, a village outside of Manama, over a Twitter posting on June 2. Rajab’s tweet called for the prime minister to resign and asserted he was not popular in the village. Hours after the ruling, masked men arrested Rajab at his home, witnesses told Human Rights Watch. Rajab is head of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) and a member of the advisory committee of Human Rights Watch’s Middle East and North Africa Division."-Human Rights Watch. 62] – As gentrification and economic development rapidly change neighborhoods across the District of Columbia, thousands of low income households are being pushed to the margins. Through a radical vision of community service and an extensive volunteer network, We Are Family brings groceries and provides basic assistance to 600 low income seniors in Columbia Heights and the North Capitol area each month. They bring advocacy, services, organizing, and companionship into the homes of isolated, low-income elderly, while helping to build friendships across boundaries like race, class, religion, age, culture, and sexual orientation.

On Thurs., July 19 from 12:30 to 2 PM at the IPS conference room, 1112 16th St. NW, join IPS' Cities for Progress for this brown bag discussion featuring We Are Family co-director, Mark Anderson, and American U. Assistant Professor of Sociology, Michael Bader, for a discussion about the innovative methods used by scholars to study urban poverty – and the creative activism by community organizations addressing it. Email info@ips-dc.org. Go to http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/260374.

63] – Eat, Drink, & Be Married is happening on Thurs., July 19 from 6 to 9 PM at Mad River Bar & Grille, 1110 S. Charles St. Join ACLU Maryland to help defend the new law that allows same-sex couples to get marriage licenses in Maryland. If you believe in marriage equality, come raise your glass for a great cause! Donate $15 and you’ll receive a free drink. Mad River will donate a large portion of the tips collected at the bar. Get the inside scoop on the campaign in Maryland, win prizes and meet others committed to protecting the freedom to marry. Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/356186434453668/.

64] – There is a screening of "Seeds of Freedom" on Thurs., July 19 at 6 PM at Green America Office, 1612 K St. NW, #600. Green America is excited to host the screening of a film, which examines how the loss of indigenous seeds (and the rise of genetically modified seeds) affects local communities -- loss of cultural traditions, livelihoods, and food sovereignty -- in some of the most vulnerable areas of the planet. Food and rink will be available. After the film, catch a discussion led by Green America's Shireen Karimi. Email rkimsolloway@greenamerica.org.

65] – The movement to overturn Citizens United scored a great victory on July 5, with the California legislature passing a resolution calling for a Constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling in that case. Public Citizen’s Democracy is for People Campaign will be holding an organizing event s in Baltimore at The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, 4 E. University Parkway, Baltimore 21218, on Thurs., July 19 from 7 to 9:30 PM.

During this event activists that have passed resolutions will share their experiences and provide advice about what actions to take and pitfalls to avoid. Plans for future resolutions and actions will be discussed, and the idea is to develop a strategy to target members of the Maryland Congressional delegation that have not yet endorsed a Constitutional Amendment. RSVP to Stephen Schiavone at sschiavone@citizen.org.

66] – The New Jim Crow Discussion Series starts on Thurs., July 19 at 7 PM at La Casa Community Church, 3166 Mt Pleasant St. NW. Not since the “Auto-Biography of Malcolm X” has a book been so eagerly read by a new generation of radicals and activists. Michele Alexander's "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness" will be read and discussed. Join the International Socialist Organization, which will lead the discussion. The discussion will take place over three Thursdays—also Aug. 2 and Aug. 16. You don't have to read to participate, but it will help! Email iso_district@yahoo.com.

667] – Attend a Community Forum for Immigrants on Deferred Action on Thurs., July 19 at 7 PM at St. Stephen's, 1525 Newton St. NW. PJP includes HIV advocates, researchers, health and social service providers, media representatives, policy analysts, law enforcement and people living with HIV. 69] – There is a job available as a “CLIMATE & HEALTH” ORGANIZER for the Chesapeake Chapter, Physicians for Social Responsibility. The organizer would work in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. This is ground-breaking, transformative work in addressing climate and energy issues, among the most important health and environmental issues we face today. This would not only be a display of objects on a gallery wall, but would also involve events which would return Tom's art to the streets where it was originally meant to make conscience visible.

77] – HELP MAKE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST! Since a civil war in 1974 the island of Cyprus has been divided in two with a United Nations patrolled border. Turkish/Muslim Cypriots are in the north; Greek/Christian Cypriots are in the south. Animosities and prejudices run deep. Children throw rocks at each other across the border. Experts believe that Cyprus is at a crossroads between renewed conflict or becoming an example in the Middle East of how two such cultures can live in peace.

The Cyprus Friendship Program, based on the successful model that helped build peace in Northern Ireland, brings over a Muslim and Christian teen to stay with an American host family for the month of July (or ½ month if paired with another host family). This bonding experience in a neutral environment almost always results in a strong friendship. Programming here and after their return to Cyprus turns them into peace builders who are trained in how to influence their peers. The teens are chosen for their maturity, leadership potential, and English speaking ability. You choose the gender and age (from 15 to 17). To learn more contact Tom McCarthy at 301-774-7069 or Thomas.McCarthy@RaymondJames.com.

This video is only 3 minutes long but gives a good overview of the program. It was made by the US State Department

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8rSmOKgY_4. This video is about 8 minutes, gives more info on some of their activities while here, and was made in part by the teens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egcM0Fnj2YA.

A growing group of leaders around the world is calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons and a majority of the global public agrees. This is an historic window of opportunity. With momentum already building in favor of Zero, a major show of support from people around the world could tip the balance. When it comes to nuclear weapons, one is one too many.

"One is called to live nonviolently, even if the change one works for seems impossible. It may or may not be possible to turn the US around through nonviolent revolution. But one thing favors such an attempt: the total inability of violence to change anything for the better" - Daniel Berrigan
