38] – Bradley Manning is back in court for a series of hearings—Mon., July 16 through Wed., July 18—outside the main gate of Fort Meade, Reece Road and Route 175. The Bradley Manning Support Network will vigil each day from 8 to 9:30 AM. Then supporters will go inside for the heading. Max expects to drive out each day for the vigil. Call 410-366-1637.

39] – On Mon., July 16 at 12:30 PM, get involved in a petition delivery to Rep. Steny Hoyer. This AIDS petition (more than 170,000 signers and counting) will happen at over 80 offices across the country. It is organized by ONE.org. The delivery will be at Rep. 41] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s Super Max Prison, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore. Maryland’s death row was moved out of Baltimore, but it was decided to continue the vigil. The next one is scheduled for Mon., July 16. Call 410-366-1637.



42] – On Mon., July 16 at 7 PM, participate in the annual Josephine Butler Award ceremony given to a Metropolitan Washington resident who exemplifies Jo's commitment to the struggle for Justice, Peace & Nuclear Disarmament. The award will be given to Luci Murphy, and the ceremony will be held at the Josephine Butler Parks Center, 2437 15th St. NW, WDC 20009. David Sawyer will perform a short concert in Luci's honor.



43] – Open Media Film Series is screening "Why We Fight" on Mon., July 16 at 7 PM at the Occupy Peace House, 1123 12th St. NW. Every other Monday, see a free screening of a documentary. Open Media is a new social/educational event for activists, presented by the DC Learning Collective, DC Mic Check and Occupy Peace House. "Why We Fight" is about U.S. foreign policy, dominated by the idea of making war profitable. Email OpenMediaDC@gmail.com.

The proposed agenda will include reports on Bradley Manning, arranging a meeting with Dutch Ruppersberger, anti-drone actions, the annual Hiroshima-Nagasaki commemoration and the need for poets to read on August 10. Let Max know of any additional agenda items.

45] – Fools on the Hill Demonstration is happening on Tues., July 17 from 9 AM through Fri., July 20 at 9 PM. Email info@honorinoffice.org for the location. CONVERGE ON DC to rally for political reform. Hand deliver the petition and a copy of “Fools on the Hill” to each member of Congress so that they can see this is an issue that everyone wants resolved once and for all. “Politics as usual” is not working. Members of Congress are smart enough to figure out an effective way to accomplish this needed political reform.

48] – Combatants for Peace will be at the Carnegie Endowment for Peace, 1st Floor, 1779 Massachusetts Ave. NW on Wed., July 18 at noon. The group was launched in the past decade by Israeli and Palestinian veterans who had previously taken an active part in the cycle of Israeli-Palestinian violence; Israelis as soldiers in the IDF, and Palestinians as part of the violent struggle for Palestinian freedom. They have rejected violence as a means of resolving the conflict and advocate nonviolence, dialogue and reconciliation to end the occupation, stop settlements, and bring peace through two states, living side by side, with two capitals in Jerusalem. While inside, we will deliver a letter to urge the representative to pledge to vote against further funding of wars. We will also let him know that he should sign on to the following legislation: HR 780, the Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act, HR 4173, Rep. Lee’s "Prevent Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons and Stop War Through Diplomacy Act," HR 676, the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, HR 1200, Rep. Jim McDermott’s American Health Security Act of 2011 to deliver universal health care coverage, HR 870/ 4277 - Rep. Conyers “21st Century Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment and Training Act” which would establish the National Full Employment Trust Fund to create employment opportunities for the unemployed, and H.R. 2914 - Rep. Jan Schakowsky’s “Emergency Jobs to Restore the American Dream Act” which would create an emergency jobs program that will fund 2,242,000 jobs in the near-term.

52] – Voices of Palestine Summer Film Series continues with " Love During Wartime" on Wed., July 18 at 6:30 PM at The Jerusalem Fund, 2425 Virginia Ave, NW. The Jerusalem Fund and the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University are pleased to present their annual summer film series highlighting recent documentary and feature films from and about Palestine that explore the social, cultural and political complexities of Palestinian life and identity.



“Love during Wartime” is the real, modern-day tale of Romeo and Juliet. Two fated lovers fighting against the world with their only weapon: Love. In the middle of the smoke and debris, from the most well known running conflict in the world is Osama, a Palestinian Muslim artist. Jasmin is an Israeli Jew who is a dancer and a daughter of a German Jewish immigrant. Israeli bureaucracy filled with suspicion and a menacing Palestinian society make their life a nightmare. All they want to do is create a new life together removed from politics, religion and history. But, of course, this is not easy in a land where their societies have turned their backs on them, disapproving of such a union. And so, they leave in search of a new life. The Campaign is made up of hundreds of people who believe all District residents deserve housing they can afford.
