3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

5] – Brad Hathaway spearheads an effort to sell donated used stamps to raise money for different humanitarian causes around the world. 6] – Anne Feeney has recently been diagnosed with a lung tumor and will not be able to work for some time. She is looking for a thousand friends to each donate $50 (no more than that). 7] – There will be a benefit -- "An Evening of Art & Politics" -- at the Maryland Art Place, 8 Market Place, Suite 100, Baltimore, MD 21202-4015 to celebrate Maryland PIRG's recent victories for children's health, a fairer economy and a more open and transparent government on Thurs., Aug. 12 from 7 to 9 PMCongressperson Donna Edwards from Maryland's fourth district will speak about the importance of organizing to make social change. The rest of the time will be yours to socialize and enjoy the art, good company, hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. Donations are greatly appreciated, but optional. Maryland became one of the first states to ban two toxic chemicals, thanks in large part to the organizing and advocacy of Maryland PIRG staff. Soon it will be illegal to manufacture baby bottles with Bisphenol-A (BPA), and a toxic flame retardant will be almost completely phased out, making electronics, mattresses, couches, and many other common products safer. Moving forward, Maryland PIRG is working to close corporate tax loopholes that allow many multi-state corporations to avoid paying state taxes altogether, putting the tax burden on individuals and small businesses. 11] – A vigil for Justice in Palestine/Israel (now in its 8th year) takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM at 19th & JFK Blvd., Philadelphia (across from Israeli Consulate.  It is sponsored by Bubbies & Zaydes (Grandparents) for Peace in the Middle East. 12] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Aug. 13 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings. 

 

13] – SHED LIGHT ON US WAR CASUALTIES: FROM THE FRONT LINE TO THE BACK DOOR of Walter Reed Army Medical Center (North Gate), every Friday night, from 7 to 9 PM in the middle of the 7100 block of Georgia Ave., NW. 14] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 15] – Citizens Planning and Housing Association is urging you to shop at the W. Baltimore Farmer's Market on Sat., Aug. 14 from 8 AM to noon and every Saturday through Nov. 20. 16] – On Sat., Aug. 14, from 10 AM to 6 PM, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' Modern-Day Slavery Museum is coming to Baltimore at the Inner Harbor's McKeldin Square (located at the intersection of Light and Pratt Sts.).  The CIW developed the Florida Modern-Day Slavery Museum in consultation with forced labor survivors as well as leading academic authorities on slavery and Florida labor history.  The US Department of State recently hosted the museum on the national mall during the release of its 2010 Trafficking in Persons Report, in which the CIW’s anti-slavery coordinator was named the first US-based anti-trafficking hero.  The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is a community-based organization of mainly Latino, Mayan Indian and Haitian immigrants working in low-wage jobs throughout the state of Florida.  During this Northeast tour of the museum, visitors will be invited to call upon Ahold, which owns Stop and Shop and Giant grocery chains, to join McDonald’s, Whole Foods Market, Aramark and five other major food retailers in working with the CIW to end these human rights abuses in the fields of their Florida suppliers.  Go to www.ciw-online.org/museum. 21] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Aug. 14. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 22] – There is a garden party for Donna Edwards, the most progressive and most anti-war representative from Maryland, who is facing a challenge from the right, on Sat.,  Aug. 14 from 1 to 3 PM at Jean Athey’s home, 2305 Gold Mine Road, Brookeville, MD 20833. She refuses to take corporate donations, and some of her votes have infuriated some powerful interests, like AIPAC. Donna will be at this event, so you would have a chance to meet her.    

 

23] – A Conference and Benefit for Animal and Earth Liberation Prisoners is on for Sat., Aug. 14 from 4 to 10 PM at St. Stephens Church, 1525 Newton St. NW, WDC.  Open the Cages Alliance presents an evening of music, speakers, vegan food and fun!  There will be a silent auction and a raffle, and this event will benefit activists imprisoned for fighting for animals and our planet.  Performers will include Masakari, Peregrine, and "Aware and Outraged" Ron Kipling Williams.  Speakers will include Food Not Bombs founder Keith McHenry, Darius Fullmer from Sea Shepherd (and one of the SHAC 7), Will Potter of GreenIsTheNewRed.com, and author Dara Lovitz.  Dara will be signing and selling copies of her book MUZZLING A MOVEMENT!  Volunteers are needed for this event, so email info@BaltimoreAnimalRights.com.  Admission is $10.  Email adam@openthecages.org.

31] – There is a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  The next vigil is Mon., Aug. 16, and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Call 202-882-9649.

33] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s Super Max Prison, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  Recently death row was moved out of Baltimore, but it was decided to continue the vigil. The next one is scheduled for Mon., Aug. 16.  Call 410-366-1637.

34] – Baltimore’s Green Works presents a free showing of THE END OF THE LINE [2009] on Mon., Aug. 16 at 6 PM at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Southeast Anchor branch, 3601 Eastern Ave. The film, which is being shown for free, explores the exploding demand for seafood and its potentially catastrophic effect on the planet.  Call 410-396-1580 or go to www.baltimoregreenworks.com.   On Wed., Aug. 18, Green Works presents a talk by Paul Greenberg, author of FOUR FISH: The Future of the Last Wild Food, at the same site.

36] – There is a vigil to say "War Is Not the Answer" each Tuesday since September 11, 2001 at 4806 York Road. Join this ongoing vigil.  The next vigil is Aug. 10 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Note participants will make a call for clean energy.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

37] – Each Wednesday from 4:30 - 5:30 PM, the House of Grace Catholic Worker holds a weekly vigil for peace in Iraq outside the Phila. Federal Building, 6th & Market Sts. The next vigil is Aug. 18. Call 215-426-0364.

 

38] – On Wed., Aug. 18, Progressive Democrats of America will be joined by CODEPINK and others in holding brownbag vigils outside (or inside) offices of members of the House of Representatives.  Brownbaggers are demanding commitments to vote against more money for war. Slogans on their posters include: "Healthcare not Warfare," "Corporations out of Politics," "Bailout Main Street not Wall Street," and "Brownbaggers not Teabaggers".  Go to http://tinyurl.com/brownbagvigil.

 

  The Pledge of Resistance will go to Rep. John Sarbanes’ office, 600 Baltimore Ave., Suite 303, Baltimore, MD 21204, on Aug. 18 at 4:30 PM.  While inside, we will speak to staff members to urge the representative to pledge to vote against further funding of wars.  At 5 PM, we will demonstrate on Bosley Ave.  e of Healthcare Not Warfare and thank the representative for co-sponsoring H.R. 5015 calling for an exit strategy from Afghanistan and for voting against supplemental funds to fight the war in Afghanistan.

 

39] – WIB does a silent vigil mourning all violence the third Wednesday of the month.  The next vigil is Wed., Aug. 18 from 6:30 PM to 7 PM at the intersection of Martin & Patrick Sts in downtown Frederick.  Wear black, but bring no additional signs. 41] – On Thurs., Aug. 19, the WEEKLY ROUNDTABLE SEEKING A JUST PEACE IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL takes place from 12:30 - 1:30 PM at Potter's House, 1658 Columbia Road NW, WDC.  Join a civil discourse which explores the history, issues, myths, realities, and truth of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. 42] – A Transition Town Training Building Resilient Communities for a Post-Carbon World is on for Sat., Aug. 21 and Sun., Aug. 22.  Each training will be from 9 AM to 5 PM, and will be hosted by SCHOOL OF LIVING at HEATHCOTE COMMUNITY, Freeland, MD 21053. There is a sliding scale fee from $200 to $300. Meals & lodging are available at extra cost.  The Transition movement is a grassroots initiative that seeks to build sustainable community to counter the inevitable challenges of climate change, oil depletion, and economic instability.  Dependence on fossil fuels must be ended. The training is co-sponsored by the Eastern Pennsylvania Permaculture Guild.

45] – Gimme Shelter Productions continues to do consciousness/fundraising events about the plight of the homeless and for the shelters that serve them. On Sat., Aug. 21 at 7:30 PM, the group winds up its season at the Hamilton Arts Gallery 5502 Harford Rd. The featured performers will be Marcus Colasurdo, Suzanne X¹, In The Clear, Jasaga, Alan Barysh and Ron Williams in a memorable evening of music and poetry.  Attendees are asked to make a $5 donation. 46] – HIT AND STAY is a feature-length documentary (in-production) by Joe Tropea about the antiwar movement. It takes an in-depth look at the Vietnam War era activists who attacked the Selective Service system and attempted to throw a wrench into the U.S. war machine. HIT AND STAY may be the definitive documentary about the Catonsville Nine and the fifty or so actions that followed. Together, the participants in these events were called the Catholic Left, a group comprised largely of priests and nuns and their friends who destroyed draft records and raided the corporate offices of companies that profited from the war. This documentary tells their story in their own words with more archival footage and activists interviewed than any prior film. Interviewees include Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Bill Ayers, Amy Goodman, and over 30 activists from draft board actions. Hit and Stay seeks to explore the boundaries of nonviolent direct action and to be a conversation-starter about the antiwar movement (then and now).
