27] – Military Families Speak Out in collaboration with American Friends Service Committee is bringing a new Eyes Wide Open Exhibit to Washington, D.C. on Sat., Oct. 3 and Sun., Oct. 4.  The Exhibit will be located on the Ellipse, or “President’s Park”, as they refer to it in the National Parks Service, on the Southeast quadrant. Over 830 pairs of combat boots representing the fallen troops in Afghanistan and 100 shoes, a fraction of those civilians killed during 8 years of war and occupation will be displayed. Afghanistan was brutally invaded, and eight years later, the exhibit will show the human costs to both US troops and Afghan civilians. Go to www.afghanistan8yearsofwar.org

29] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

30] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., Oct. 3. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 31] – On Sat., Oct. 3 at 1 PM, attend the Peace Meal, a hot vegetarian lunch, and hear sociologist Francisco Acosta, executive director of the National Association of Indians in Exile, who will discuss peace and justice at 4209 East West Hwy., Chevy Chase, MD 20815He has over 20 years experience as a political and grassroots organizer, Congressional lobbyist, and advocate for community development on Hispanic/Latino issues. He has served as Regional Director for the Southwest-Project Vote at ACORN. Currently he works with native people from Latin American countries living in the United States. His talk will be followed by a 60 min. film "Yesterdays Enemies."

39] The National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance (NCNR) is planning an act of nonviolent civil resistance at the White House on Mon., Oct. 5 -- the week of the 8th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan.  Members of the October 5 coalition include NCNR, Witness Against Torture, Peace Action, War Resisters League, Voices for Creative Nonviolence, World Can't Wait and Atlantic Life Community.  In addition to calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the coalition is calling for ending the occupation of Iraq now, ending the illegal bombing by drones in Pakistan, closing the Bagram prison and ending indefinite detention and torture.  

  Participants will gather at the Supreme Court at 8:30 AM before marching to McPherson Square for a 10 AM legal rally.  Affinity groups will prepare for the visit to the White House.  There will be poets and musicians, and Liz McAlister, lifelong war resister and widow of Philip Berrigan will speak.  October 5 is Phil Berrigan’s birthday.  

 

 At 11:30 AM, there will be a somber procession to the White House.  A request for a meeting with Obama officials will then be made. A failure by the White House to call for an end to the war on the people of Afghanistan will cause the affinity groups to engage in nonviolent civil resistance. .

41] – Every Sunday until Nov. 3, from 4:30 to 6 PM at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Aves., near Barnes & Noble and the Landmark Theaters, there will be a peace vigil organized by Bethesda Friends. Everyone welcome to participate!  

 

42] – There is a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  The next vigil is Mon., Oct. 5, and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Call 202-882-9649.

44] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  However, the next vigil is scheduled for Mon., Oct. 5.  Call 410-233-0488.

 

45] – It is hoped that Baltimore United for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM on Mon., Oct. 5 at the AFSC, 4806 York Road. The BUPJ agenda will focus on planning two events, a town hall meeting at Goucher College where Phyllis Bennis will speak and Rep. Donna Edwards will be invited and a forum to get ready for the legislative session in Annapolis.  As this meeting ends, the Pledge meeting will begin.  However, Max may be incarcerated, as he will be protesting the war in Afghanistan at the White House on noon.  So call 410-366-1637 to see if there is a meeting on Oct. 5.  If not, the BUPJ and Pledge meetings will take place Oct. 12.

50] –  The Palestine Center, 2425 Virginia Ave,, NW, WDC  20037, presents its annual Edward Said Memorial Lecture, "Imagining Israel-Palestine Peace: Why International Law Matters," featuring Professor Richard Falk, on Tues., Oct. 6 from 12:30 to 2 PM.  Falk is the UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestine Territories and Visiting Distinguished Professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Previously, he was the Albert G. Milbank Professor of International Law and Practice at Princeton University. He was a member of the Independent International Commission on Kosovo (1999-2001) and the Human Rights Inquiry Commission for Palestine of the UN Human Rights Commission (2002).

51] – On Tues., Oct. 6, there will be a public dance performance of “Unsung,” which tells the story of war from the soldier’s perspective. 56] – David Cole, a leading voice on civil liberties and restoring the rule of law, is speaking on Wed., Oct. 7 from 3 to 5 PM at Georgetown University Law Center, Gewirz Building, 12th floor, 600 New Jersey Avenue NW, WDC 20001. Cole, a Georgetown University law professor and Bill of Rights Defense Committee advisory board member, is also a renowned author. His latest book, The Torture Memos: Rationalizing the Unthinkable, is a powerful indictment against the Bush administration attorneys who were instrumental in authorizing the torture and inhumane treatment of U.S. detainees. 59] – On Wed., Oct. 7 at 5 PM, there will be an Anti-War Memorial Protest & "Die-in" on the 8th Anniversary of the start of the U.S. war in Afghanistan at City Hall, west side, 15th & Market Sts., Philadelphia, PA.  The bell-tolling vigil will include reading the names of Afghanistan and Iraq war dead as well as a dramatic "die-in" dramatization of eight years of war.  October 2009 also marks the seventh anniversary of the Congressional vote authorizing war in Iraq.  

60] – Children of Abraham In The 21st Century is part of the Adult Christian Education Committee at St. James’ Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square, 1020 W. Lafayette Ave., Baltimore MD 21217.  Each week in October speakers representing the faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam will discuss what makes us more similar than different. Dinner will be served at 6 PM, and the suggested donation is $5. A book signing will follow the workshop.  Jim Forest, a founder of the Catholic Peace Fellowship and former general secretary of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation, was a close personal friend of Thomas Merton.  Jim has written a number of books, including “Living with Wisdom: A Life of Thomas Merton.”

76] – The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Committee is hosting its latest FILM & SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS VIDEO SERIES. The theme is Poverty and its Manifestations.  The second film in the series is THE DEVID AND MISS JONES [USA, 1941], and it will be shown on Fri., Oct. 30 at a private home.  If interested in seeing the DVD, RSVP to Max at 410-366-1637.

Sam Wood directed this social comedy with leftist undertones. John P. Merrick (Charles Coburn), the world's richest man, gets word that someone is trying to unionize a department store that he owns. So he changes his name and takes a menial job at the store, the better to catch the union activists.  Once he is subjected to the humiliating treatment afforded his employees, Merrick starts to wise up.  He then spearheads the union movement after discovering how duplicitous his hand-picked executives can be. Jean Arthur, Robert Cummings and Spring Byington as employees of the store help him along.
