35] – DANIEL MARK EPSTEIN is expected to join eleven other MD poets reading from their poems on war and peace at Stony Run Friends Meeting, 5116 N. Charles St., just south of Northern Parkway on Sun., May 3 from 2 - 4 PM.  Other poets are William Heath, Alan Reese, Linda Joy Burke, Thomas Dorsett, Michael Fallon, Rosemary Klein, Matt Hoehner, Gregg Mosson, Sam Schmidt, Virginia Crawford, and Mary Azriel.  The 11th annual Margaret Diorio Poetry for Peace reading will include a dialogue and lively interaction with the audience.

 

Conversation over coffee and refreshments will follow in the dining room. The reading is free, although contributions will be accepted for Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (ASTT), a Baltimore based organization offering counseling, evaluation and treatment to victims of the trauma of torture. 

36] – Every Sunday until Nov. 3, from 4:30 to 6 PM at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Aves., near Barnes & Noble and the Landmark Theaters, there will be a peace vigil organized by Bethesda Friends. Everyone welcome to participate!

40] – Protesters do not believe AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee) speaks for the majority of U.S. citizens.  On Mon., May 4 from 2 to 5 PM, there will be a rally in front of AIPAC headquarters, 251 H St. NW, WDC.   From 6 to 8 PM, there will be a protest in front of the convention center where the AIPAC conference is taking place on Massachusetts Ave.

43] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  The next meeting will be May 4, and the agenda will include a visit to Sen. 45] – On Mon., May 4 at 7:30 PM, Daoud Nasser, a Palestinian Christian living in the West Bank, will be speaking in Baltimore at a private home. He has been in a years-long struggle to keep the Israeli government from taking the family property. In the last few years he has formed a Tent of Nations project dedicated to fostering peaceful relationships among Palestinians and Israelis by encouraging face-to-face meetings. People from several nations have come to the Tent of Nations to restore some of the olive trees destroyed on the property and to promote peace and a better life for people in the West Bank

47] – The American Folklife Center presents a lecture in the Benjamin Botkin Folklife Lecture Series--We Had Sneakers, They Had Guns: The Kids Who Fought for Civil Rights in Mississippi-- lecture and book signing presented by Tracy Sugarman. It takes place on Tues., May 5 from noon to 1 PM in the Mumford Room, Sixth Floor, James Madison Memorial Building, Library of Congress.  As an illustrator and journalist, Tracy Sugarman covered the nearly one thousand student volunteers who traveled to the Mississippi Delta to assist black citizens in the South in registering to vote. Two white students and one black student were slain in the struggle, many were beaten and hundreds arrested, and churches and homes were burned to the ground by the opponents of equality. Yet the example of Freedom Summer resonated across the nation. 49] – There is a meeting of Ecolocity DC every Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM at the EMERGENCE COMMUNITY ARTS COLLECTIVE, 733 Euclid St. NW, WDC 20001.  It is for people who live in, or are interested in making D.C. a transition town starting with an intentional community that will encompass clean energy, freecycle, natural building, organic farming, community salvage, new urbanism, etc. The next meeting will be on May 5. The mother of a U.S. soldier, she made international headlines by taking the extraordinary step of traveling to Iraq to visit her son stationed on a military base in the so-called Sunni Triangle, north of Baghdad. The event will include Celeste Zappala, the mother of Sgt. Sherwood Baker, the first Pennsylvania National Guard member killed in Iraq. 58] – On Thurs., May 7, the WEEKLY ROUNDTABLE SEEKING A JUST PEACE IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL takes place from 12:30 - 1:30 PM at Potter's House, 1658 Columbia Road NW, WDC.  Join a civil discourse which explores the history, issues, myths, realities, and truth of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. 59] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore hosts an End the War! Christian Slater is a high school student who does not fit in. As an outsider he starts up a pirate radio station, and the principal and the FCC go after him.  His only friend is played by Samantha Mathis.

66] – Sylvie Maunga Mbanga, a human rights lawyer and women’s activist from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is in the DC area waiting for asylum. She works with seven local organizations to end the horrific sexual violence against women in the eastern region of the Congo. She is eager to speak to audiences about her situation and that of the DRC.
