Do you want to sign on to a thank you letter?

Friends,

Rep. Donna Edwards was the only House member from Maryland [one of eight] to vote against further war funding.  So Baltimore United for Peace and Justice is sending her a thank you letter. If you are a member of a group which would want to sign on to the letter, please let me know.  Feel free to use the letter if your representative voted against war.

Dear Rep. Edwards,

We are writing to thank you for your courage and foresight in voting against HR-2346, the $96.7 billion supplemental for Iraq and Aghanistan. We commend you for going to Afghanistan and observing first hand that there is no military solution to the crisis there.

Indeed, the House Progressive Caucus, of which you are a member, has urged that Afghanistan foreign assistance be 80 percent for peaceful development and only 20 percent for military training and weapons. Yet the package approved May 13 earmarks 90 percent for the military and only 10 percent to help the Afghan people develop their economy, health, education, and physical infrastructure.

We agree with you when you said this package means “war without end” placing our soldiers “in harm’s way without a plan for being there or a strategy for leaving Afghanistan.” Already we are reading of horrible killings of innocent civilians by unmanned “drones” flying over Afghan villages.

This spending package is especially ill-conceived when millions of working people here at home, including Maryland,  are losing their jobs, their homes, their health care. We commend President Obama for his strong efforts to get our nation out of the worst economic crisis in 80 years. We support his increases in federal spending for “green jobs,” health care and public education. But all our efforts to pull the nation out of this crisis are put at risk by endless wars that  bleed our nation both in human lives and tax dollars.

We need a foreign policy based on mutual interests, mutual respect, not war, weapons, domination and exploitation. We are proud that you are leading the fight for that new, enlightened, foreign policy. You are a true tribune of the people. We stand ready to assist you in any way we can.

Signed,

Timothy L. Wheeler
