50] The Berkley Center berkleycenter@georgetown.edu is hosting a webinar on Thurs., Feb. 29 from 9 to 10 AM ET -- Global Histories of Coexistence.  This is the first of three webinars in advance of the Georgetown Global Dialogues (GGD).  In conversations with GGD fellows and other leading thinkers, Pankaj Mishra is exploring some of the questions to be addressed on campus in April in their wider historical context.

Many of today's global divides along national, ideological, cultural, religious, racial, and ideological lines have deep historical roots.  At the same time, history reveals many periods of constructive coexistence—from Al-Andalus in Iberia to phases of the Ottoman and Mughal empires, and beyond.  A better understanding of the historical dynamics of coexistence can help us think through and cope with the deep divisions in our contemporary world. What have been the preconditions for constructive coexistence in the past?  Do different world regions hold different historical lessons?  Can we draw on historical experience—as well as the resources of our diverse traditions—to imagine and implement effective and peaceful ways to deal with inevitable differences on a global scale?  Leading international intellectuals Mohsid Hamid, Ranjit Hoskote, and Ece Temelkuran will reflect on these questions in an online conversation moderated by Pankaj Mishra, renowned author, essayist, and literary critic.  RSVP for the webinar at https://georgetown.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_hepJTjOWTdWJ-WAN8fVBeA?utm_source=Berkley+Center+Master+List&utm_campaign=746b9506d3-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_02_26_10_00&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-746b9506d3-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D#/registration

51]Food & Water Watch will hold a rally on Thurs., Feb. 29 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM ET in Lawyer's Mall, 100 State Circle, Annapolis 21401.  Join in a press event and rally to get trash incineration out of Maryland’s renewable energy program. For years, community, social justice, and environmental groups have fought to stop trash incineration from receiving millions of dollars in subsidies meant for actual renewable energy like wind and solar power. In 2022 alone, Maryland wasted $24.7 million to help fund trash incineration instead of putting that money towards real renewable energy projects. Call on your legislators to pass the Reclaim Renewable Energy Act (HB166/SB146) to remove trash incineration from Maryland’s renewable portfolio.  RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/604510/?followup_modal_context=nonexclusive_newsletter_more_events_of_type

52] – Healthcare-NOW! [email@healthcare-now.org] is doing a training about the healthcare system on Thurs., Feb. 29 at 2 PM – Racial Equity & Medicare 4 All. These trainings will continue through April 4. REGISTER at https://www.healthcare-now.org/trainings/

53] – On Thurs., Feb. 29 from 4 to 6 PM ET, join a Field Team 6 phone bank to help register Dems in Pennsylvania 07 to Elect Susan Wild. You will be contacting eligible voters (likely Democrats) in Pennsylvania!  Make sure people are registered to vote, and that they can vote safely from home, is a super-effective way to make a difference. Turn voices into votes! All training provided!

54] – MAPA [info@masspeaceaction.org] on Thurs., Feb. 29 at 6:30 PM ET is hosting a webinar: Silencing Dissent - Israeli civics teacher and a member of Knesset speak out.  Challenging dominant narratives in Israeli society can sometimes get you into trouble. Meir Baruchin is an Israeli high school civics teacher who was arrested for sharing posts on his Facebook page of Palestinians who had been killed in Gaza. MK Ofer Cassif is a member of the Knesset (Parliament) where his colleagues tried to expel him because he voiced support for the South Africa case at the ICJ (International Court of Justice). Both of them will talk about the repression that they faced as well as the overall repressive atmosphere in Israel and why that is happening. Note there will be an empty chair for the Palestinians that were invited who cannot participate out of fear of retaliation or repression. RSVP at https://secure.everyaction.com/W3ZofVmwmkatGNE6aVQJ9Q2?contactdata=uzgHYtGGluZxeEBQ7%2fakTmMf0urZNklxTQ2rVnqUzw0Kqju+zlZtkq5ibii0DB6RXCFGID+7a1igSBVu+opfFsJ1efGtj0oaA6fbonZWOAUunxS6HXD9uGUOfAYA+p3H60aXFPko7RHvLQ4kZxAZZ0h7vJg%2fq6Hxio1agTVDLGS2mseUKxvOU2Xym6xfaXNkvPVczNvl77i3dkNF4o3Vw6TZ8Q2KZEqoH4bA6R%2fDM4DsBOdpz6vmQZ%2fW6ViXIqQWd0+YvkVYDHoE72TpWSHSWqgzRRMKTpRPnxEZSADfz6X9JBQFQdG3CyrGI2EYcytlEahxSVfPPr5%2fvnZ1PhtEQA%3d%3d&emci=b514e461-68cb-ee11-85f9-002248223794&emdi=66e3bbe0-86d5-ee11-85f9-002248223794&ceid=269591

Meir Baruchin, PhD, has been a high-school history and civics teacher for over 30 years.  His doctoral thesis was on “Congressional Involvement in the Use of Armed Forces Abroad: The Clinton Administration.”  Fun fact:  he was declared an Honorary Texan by Gov. George W. Bush!

MK Dr. Ofer Cassif represents the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (Hadash) in the Knesset since 2019. MK Cassif is part of the Communist Party of Israel (MAKI) political bureau, the sole shared Jewish-Arab party in Israel, for which Hadash acts as its parliamentary wing. He holds a PhD in political science from London School of Economics. Prior to his election to the Knesset he taught in the Hebrew University and Sapir College.

55] – Check out on Thurs., Feb. 29 at 7 PM ET a webinar: PREVENTING CLIMATE CATASTROPHE and NUCLEAR WAR, presented by the Veterans For Peace Nuclear Abolition Working Group. Hear from two major anti-nuclear activists speaking on climate and nuclear weapons: Dr. Ivana Hughes and Dr. Timmon Wallis. They will speak on why both issues must be addressed with equal urgency, and then discuss how together we can build mass movement that can put an end to these threats. Register at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAof-6tqDkpHdZwxJ7-s5BnWvpnlHdLYeIe#/registration

Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes is President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Chemistry at Columbia University. Her work on ascertaining the radiological conditions in the Marshall Islands has been covered widely. Dr. Hughes currently serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Group to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.  Dr. Timmon Wallis is Executive Director of NuclearBan.US and coordinator of the national Warheads to Windmills Coalition.  His book, Disarming the Nuclear Argument, contributed to the negotiations which led to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and earned ICAN its Nobel Peace Prize in 2017. His most recent book, Warheads to Windmills: Preventing Climate Catastrophe and Nuclear War was published in December 2023.

56] – Climate Hawks Vote [info@climatehawksvote.com] needs you to participate in a phone bank on Thurs., Feb. 29 from 7 to 9 PM ET.  For Climate Hawk candidates in deep blue districts the election that matters is in just a few weeks. Laura Friedman is one such climate hawk, and you can join a phone bank to help her.  Friedman is a state legislator, where she’s led on climate bills: phasing out single use plastics, transportation, parking, building decarbonization and more. But don’t just listen to us; listen to the Los Angeles Times, which has provided an early endorsement of Laura: she “has built a reputation as a smart, thoughtful, and principled policymaker who takes on difficult issues–such as…climate change–to solve problems, not to score political points.”  California’s 30th Congressional District, covering Burbank and Hollywood, is a deep blue open seat (its current representative, Adam Schiff, is running for Senate). A dozen or so candidates have shown interest in running, but only a few of them are top-tier – and only one, Laura Friedman, is the stand-out climate hawk.  Ballots went out February 5 and the last day to vote in the primary is March 5. Sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/climatehawksvote/event/594140/?emci=976b1203-c1bf-ee11-b660-002248223197&emdi=19309a1e-41c0-ee11-b660-002248223197&ceid=13143726

You'll leave energized and organized. Invite your progressive friends! RSVP at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcrcuGgrDItHdeYV7F9QQsruFMypvcMt5Fc#/registration
