–Food
& Water Watch will hold a rally on Thurs., Feb. 29 from 11:30 AM to 12:30
PM ET in Lawyer's Mall, 100 State Circle, Annapolis 21401. Join in a press event and rally to get trash
incineration out of Maryland’s renewable energy program. For years, community,
social justice, and environmental groups have fought to stop trash incineration
from receiving millions of dollars in subsidies meant for actual renewable
energy like wind and solar power. In 2022 alone, Maryland wasted $24.7 million
to help fund trash incineration instead of putting that money towards real
renewable energy projects. Call on your legislators to pass the Reclaim Renewable
Energy Act (HB166/SB146) to remove trash incineration from Maryland’s renewable
portfolio. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/604510/?followup_modal_context=nonexclusive_newsletter_more_events_of_type

DSA is proud to endorse Listen to Michigan's "Vote Uncommitted" campaign--an effort to encourage Michigan voters who support a ceasefire to vote "Uncommitted" in the state's February 27th Democratic presidential primary. Show Joe Biden and the Democratic establishment how many Democratic voters in a key swing state are willing to withhold their votes from Biden until there's a permanent ceasefire to end Israel's genocidal war on the people of Gaza. 54] -- On Thurs., Feb. 22 from 7 to 8:30 PM ET, Common Cause is hosting a virtual Letter to the Editor Party: Freedom to Vote. In America, we value our freedom. The freedom to have a say in decisions that impact our lives - from curbing the pandemic to creating jobs to making health care affordable. For months, the American people have been calling for national standards to protect our freedom to vote and have an equal voice in our government. In July of 2023, the Freedom to Vote Act was reintroduced in the Senate. The Freedom to Vote Act is an extremely necessary reform. This important legislation will protect our right to vote, end partisan gerrymandering, counter undemocratic and dangerous election sabotage efforts, and help eliminate the undue influence of dark money in our elections.
The last time the Freedom to Vote Act was introduced, all 50 Senate Democrats twice voted to advance major voting rights legislation, and all Senate Republicans twice voted against even allowing public debate on the bill, causing a filibuster. If we don’t get the Freedom to Vote Act passed, then millions of Americans will likely find it harder to have their voices heard as states continue to pass voter. 55] –Peace Action [info@peaceaction.org] is supporting progressive candidates. On Thurs., Feb. 22 at 7 PM ET, meet Kina Collins [IL-7] who is running for Congress on “a pro-peace agenda, a pro-justice agenda, a pro-liberation agenda, and an agenda that promotes diplomacy.” Growing up in the West Side of Chicago, Kina witnessed the impact of systemic poverty firsthand, so she became an organizer for gun violence prevention and health care, fighting to better the communities most in need. Unsurprisingly, Kina has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza since the very beginning, as well as assistance to address the increasingly worsening humanitarian crisis.
Kina’s opponent, incumbent Danny Davis, has yet to take a pro-ceasefire stance, and Kina is not letting him off the hook. In early November, she pointed out that Davis “is making a policy choice to fund the killings of innocent Gazans every day he doesn't call for peace.” Shortly after being put on the spot, Davis called for a humanitarian pause in hostilities. 56] – Climate Hawks Vote [info@climatehawksvote.com] needs you to participate in a phone bank on Thurs., Feb. 22 from 7 to 9 PM ET. For Climate hawk candidates in deep blue districts the election that matters is in just a few weeks. Laura Friedman is one such climate hawk, and you can join a phone bank to help her. Friedman is a state legislator, where she’s led on climate bills: phasing out single use plastics, transportation, parking, building decarbonization and more. But don’t just listen to us; listen to the Los Angeles Times, which has provided an early endorsement of Laura: she “has built a reputation as a smart, thoughtful, and principled policymaker who takes on difficult issues–such as…climate change–to solve problems, not to score political points.” California’s 30th Congressional District, covering Burbank and Hollywood, is a deep blue open seat (its current representative, Adam Schiff, is running for Senate). A dozen or so candidates have shown interest in running, but only a few of them are top-tier – and only one, Laura Friedman, is the stand-out climate hawk. Ballots went out February 5 and the last day to vote in the primary is March 5. Sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/climatehawksvote/event/594140/?emci=976b1203-c1bf-ee11-b660-002248223197&emdi=19309a1e-41c0-ee11-b660-002248223197&ceid=13143726
57] – The IfNotNow team <info@ifnotnowmovement.org> is holding a national call on Thurs., Feb. 22 at 8 PM ET to seek a lasting ceasefire. Last week, the Israeli military launched a brutal assault on Rafah, where over 1.4 Palestinians are sheltering after being forcibly displaced by months of bombardment. Now, the Israeli government is openly preparing for a ground invasion, leaving Gazans with nowhere to go. Now is the time to act.
