During much of her lifetime (1863-1931), Ida B. Wells was a household name in black America. William Greaves’ film is a biography of a crusading journalist, anti-lynching campaigner, and black suffragette during the most repressive years of the Jim Crow period. It documents the dramatic life and turbulent times of a pioneering African-American woman during the post-Reconstruction period. Toni Morrison reads selections from Wells’ memoirs and other writings. Well-known multimedia journalist and Baltimore City native, Nicki Mayo, will lead the discussion after the film. The Greenbelt Black History and Culture Committee in celebration of Greenbelt’s Black History Month co-sponsors this month’s film along with the Peace and Justice Coalition. This is part of a monthly film series focused on environmental, social justice and animal rights issues, presented by the Utopia Film Festival and the Prince George's County Peace and Justice Coalition and Beaverdam Creek Watershed Watch Group.
23] – Protecting the Gift of Creation, there will be a Faith Leader Rally on Tues., Feb 22 at 11 AM ET on Zoom. As the preamble to the amendment says: all living things are dependent upon the gifts of a healthful environment. The full expression of human dignity is incompatible with a degraded environment, and access to a healthful environment is a birthright of all persons. We can and must ensure each person's right to a healthful and sustainable environment in our state constitution for current and future generations. To that end, faith leaders from across the state will be gathering to urge the Maryland General Assembly to pass HB596/SB783 - the Environmental Human Rights Amendment. If you are a faith leader, whether lay or ordained, please join them. Rev. Dellyne Hinton (United Methodist), Chair of the Central Maryland Ecumenical Council), who has been an advocate for this amendment from the beginning, will be our emcee. Confirmed speakers include Rev. Ken Phelps, Jr (Episcopal) and Rabbi Michael Webber (Jewish community).
