26] – As COVID-19 continues to spread across the country, students, parents and educators are facing an uncertain new school year. Our schools need resources to prevent the virus from spreading in the classroom, which is why the House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act in May. But instead of passing this much-needed relief bill to invest $1 trillion in schools, states and communities, President Trump, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have failed for months to make sure that public schools have the resources they need to open safely this fall. Senate Republicans have refused to even consider the HEROES Act. On Wed., Sept. 2 at 9 AM at Takoma Park Elementary, 7511 Holly Ave., Takoma Park 20912, demand safe schools for our students.  Email jennifer.texas.aft@gmail.com.

27] – On Wed., Aug. 26 from 10 AM to 3 PM, be at Farming Hope: Gardening to Feed our Neighbors, hosted by Maryland Presbyterian Church and North Baltimore Presbyterians - Ministry Group. Folks will gather each Wednesday through Sept. 30. All of the food grown will be donated to various food pantries in our area. Please be in contact if you would like to volunteer. 36] – On Thurs., Sept. 3 from 2 to 3 PM, hear about a book “Reactionary Democracy in the United States: How Racism and the Populist Far Right Became Mainstream,” hosted by Bahá'í Chair for World Peace. This is an Online Event: https://umd.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CLbc1GUNRpacm0v2dISWTg. In this talk, Aurelien Mondon and Aaron Winter will discuss their book. Recent developments and protests in the US, and more widely, have shown the reality of systemic racism and convergence of the mainstream and far right after a long period in which racism was deemed to be unacceptable and our societies ‘post-racial’. In this talk, Mondon and Winter will look at the legitimisation and mainstreaming of racism and the far right through a variety of processes, such as the construction and racialisation of ‘the people’ or demos as white, ‘populist hype’, euphemisation and liberal tropes such as free speech. They argue that this has not only made racism more acceptable, but emboldened racists, including the far right, once seen as the unacceptable face of what Mondon and Winter term ‘illiberal racism’. In addition to examining this process and history, they will also discuss what we need to do as anti-racists to not only fight racism and the far right, but ensure democracy is itself progressive. They will focus the talk on the United States, but also draw from case studies on the UK and France from the book. Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/338214970894829/.

That’s why our team is hosting a new workshop: “#AbolishICE: Know Your Rights & Resisting ICE.” During the workshop, share know-your-rights information and who’s at risk of being targeted by ICE. And share how to organize against ICE and protect undocumented communities. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/ocasiocortez/event/312472/?akid=1296.751982.dqgmYA&amounts=5%2C20%2C50%2C100%2C250%2C500%2C1000&rd=1&source=em20200901-1296&t=1&utm_source=em20200901-1296.

40] – Save the People's Post Office on Thurs., Sept. 3 at 8 PM ET. Register for the Webinar: cutt.ly/savethepeoplespostoffice.  Visit https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Qpbmyc9gSMu5a19Cqd7gGA. The new head of the Post Office, a Trump supporter, has purposely instituted work rules and practices that slow down mail processing and delivery. The actions mirror Trump's attempts to undermine confidence in the postal service, just before the next presidential elections. Degrading USPS abilities to function properly could also lead to privatization and higher prices for all. Postal workers and community activists will speak on why everyone should defend the people's postal service.

41] – Join Indivisible on a National Activist Call on Thurs., Sept. 3 at 8 PM ET so that you can stay in the loop.  The monthly national activist calls are a space for group leaders, members and other Indivisible activists to hear about our key priorities and updates while building connections across the network. Besides being informative, it can be a space to lean on each other for support during this deeply painful time.
