52] – What is The African Diaspora's Responsibility Towards Africa? This question will be answered on Wed., May 22, 2013 from noon until 1:30 PM at the Institute for Policy Studies, 1112 16th St. NW, Suite 600. There will be a Foreign Policy In Focus brown bag discussion in commemoration of African Liberation Day.
Over fifty years ago, the architects of African independence (Nkrumah, Nyerere, Lumumba, and many others) met in Accra, Tunis, and Cairo to discuss the way forward for Africa. The discussion then focused on post-colonial Africa – on self determination, economic and social development, and involved a burgeoning but small intellectual class who were mostly educated outside of the Continent. Fast-forward 50 years and an approximately 30 million Africans live outside of Africa. Considering that many of these Africans often have greater access to capital, knowledge, and skills that could further fasten African development, are they the new architects of Africa's future? Do they have a further responsibility towards the social & economic development of their respective countries? CompareAfrique.com will host a discussion on whether or not the Diaspora is essential to Africa’s development. RSVP by emailing Netfa at netfa@ips-dc.org.
53] – On Wed., May 22 at 4:30 PM, Alliance for Justice is co-sponsoring an event with Human Rights Campaign to explore what activists, nonprofits, and funders can learn from last year's successful state campaigns in support of marriage equality. It takes place at Human Rights Campaign, 1640 Rhode Island Ave. NW, WDC 20036. Nan Aron, Alliance for Justice, Richard Carlbom, Minnesotans United for Marriage, Carrie Evans, Equality Maryland, Marty Rouse, Human Rights Campaign, and Betsy Smith, Mainers United for Marriage, will discuss how they built coalitions, brought in new allies, and developed successful communication techniques and messages.
Panelists will also highlight key decisions that propelled their campaigns to victory and plans to leverage the relationships they’ve built with supporters and legislators moving forward. Enjoy a networking reception afterwards. RSVP at www.bit.ly/makingchangehappen.
54] – Get over to the 2013 International Labor Rights Awards Ceremony and Reception: Down the Supply Chain: Driving Corporate Accountability on Wed., May 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the American Federation of Teachers, 555 New Jersey Ave. NW, WDC 20001. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Register at http://laborrights.org/events/international-labor-rights-awards-ceremony.
Come out to honor Senator Tom Harkin for his leadership on international labor rights policies and two amazing coalitions of unions and labor rights organizations – one in Thailand and one in the US – for their groundbreaking work to organize workers across sectors and all along global supply chains. Contact Sean Rudolph at sean@ilrf.org.
55] – Fracking is leveling forests, poisoning waterways and polluting air across the country, and we can't let it come to Maryland. The ultimate decision on fracking lies with Gov. Martin O'Malley. Send the message loud and clear: don't make Maryland a fracking state. Send him a message when he hosts the Democratic Governors Association policy conference. Come march on Wed., May 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in front of the hotel where the governors will be having their gala dinner--National Harbor, 344 Waterfront St. (intersection of Waterfront St and St. George Blvd.), Oxon Hill, MD 20745. Tell Gov. O'Malley to keep fracking out of Maryland!
Fracking in Pennsylvania has already generated more than 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater laced with toxic chemicals, corrosive salts, and sometimes even radioactive particles. We cannot risk Maryland's rivers, streams, forests and fields. Environment Maryland, 350.org, Americans Against Fracking, Food & Water Watch, and other allies are cosponsoring the Americans Against Fracking march around the National Harbor. Speak out against fracking at the Democratic Governors Association conference. Let's make it clear to them that the path to the White House is not lined with gas and oil rigs. Sign up for a bus ride here: http://act.foodandwaterwatch.org/site/Calendar/2108379587. Email action@environmentmaryland.org.

57] – Medea Benjamin will be in Baltimore on Wed., May 22 at 6:30 PM, as part of her book tour on “Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control.” She will also speak about her trip to Pakistan at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Poe Room, 400 Cathedral St., Baltimore 21201. In 2000, the Pentagon had fewer than 50 aerial drones; ten years later, it had nearly 7,500. Drones are already a $5 billion business in the U.S. alone; the U.S. Air Force now trains more drone "pilots" than bomber and fighter pilots combined. The Ivy Bookshop will sell copies of the book at a book signing following the program. Go to www.codepink.org/booktour.
Medea provides the first extensive analysis of who is producing the drones, where they are being used, who pilots these unmanned planes, and what are the legal and moral implications. She also looks at what activists, lawyers, and scientists across the globe are doing to ground these weapons. She argues that the assassinations we are carrying out from the air will come back to haunt us when the others start doing the same thing -- to us. She is a cofounder of the peace group CODEPINK and the international human rights organization Global Exchange. A former economist with the United Nations and World Health Organization, she is the author and editor of eight books.

61] –Strategy & Soul: How Philly Residents Beat Billionaires & Inspired Movements Around the World is the topic of discussion on Thurs., May 23 at 6 PM at Sankofa Cafe, 2714 Georgia Ave. NW. Back in 2006, residents of working class waterfront neighborhoods in Philly got a shock: Two $700 million casinos were coming, designed to profit off of and increase gambling addiction and, studies showed, dramatically increase violent crime. The newspapers all said, "this is a done deal." Casinos bought influence with the Mayor, City Council, State House, Governor and even the State Supreme Court judges, who are elected. Everyone said they couldn't be stopped -- definitely not by a volunteer-powered group just getting off the ground.
This interactive talk by Daniel Hunter, a co-founder of Casino-Free Philly who recently self-published a book about their victory, will explore how they did it -- and what DC residents working for change can learn about using direct action to demonstrate visions, how to shift public opinion and engage tens of thousands of people with very limited resources. The completed blocks are shown on the web site. The web site also contains information about creating a block, anti-drone resources and endorsing organizations. 66] – The death penalty repeal has been signed into law. However, two Democrats from Baltimore County – State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger and state Senator James Brochin – have joined with Republican Delegate Neil Parrott in a joint effort to petition repeal of the death penalty to the 2014 ballot. 71] – David Swanson’s latest book is When the World Outlawed War. Go to http://davidswanson.org/outlawry This is an account of how people in the United States and around the world worked to abolish war as a legitimate act of state policy and won in 1928, outlawing war with a treaty that is still on the books.
