39] – There is a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  The next vigil is Mon., Oct. 18, and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Call 202-882-9649.

41] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s Super Max Prison, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  Recently death row was moved out of Baltimore, but it was decided to continue the vigil. The next one is scheduled for Mon., Oct. 18.  Call 410-366-1637.

 

42] – George DuBois, Jr., author of the new book CROSS-CLASS ALLIANCES AND THE BIRTH OF MODERN LIBERALISM: Maryland Workers, 1865-1916, will be the guest speaker at Bill Barry’s political action class on Mon., Oct. 18 at 6:15 PM at CWA Local 2101, 8035-A Harford Road, Parkville (off Exit 31A and the Beltway).  The book describes Maryland workers’ attempts to get protective legislation passed and their dilemma of whether to have their own political organizations or whether to join coalitions of rich and middle-class Marylanders to achieve some of their goals. The class is free and open to all. George will also have copies of his book to sell and sign. Call 443-840-3563.

 

43] – On Mon., Oct. 18 at 7 PM @ 2640 [27th & St. Paul Sts.] catch Autonomous Education from Chiapas to Mexico City: Urban-Zapatista Links with Patricia Hernandez.  She is a radical sociologist from Mexico City, who has been involved in Zapatista-led efforts to develop "autonomous education" within the rebel indigenous communities of Chiapas. 44] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM, and the meetings now take place at Max’s residence.  The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 18.  The agenda will include a discussion of G. 45] – CIVIL RESISTANCE AND THE DYNAMICS OF NONVIOLENT CONFLICT is an Advanced Course for Professionals offered Jointly by US Institute for Peace and the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict running Tues., Oct. 19 through Thurs., Dec. 9 from 6 to 8 PM.  The cost is $195, and participants will receive a certificate upon completion.  Visit http://www.usip.org/education-training/courses/civil-resistance-and-power-politics. 46] – There is a vigil to say "War Is Not the Answer" each Tuesday since September 11, 2001 at 4806 York Road. Join this ongoing vigil.  The next vigil is Oct. 19 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Note participants will make a call for clean energy.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

47] Tell Sarbanes Vote Yes HR 4812 – Oct. 20

47] – On Wed., Sept. 15, Progressive Democrats of America will be joined by CODEPINK and others in holding brownbag vigils outside (or inside) offices of members of the House of Representatives.  Brownbaggers are demanding commitments to vote against more money for war and for progressive legislation. Slogans on their posters include: "Healthcare not Warfare," "Corporations out of Politics," "Bailout Main Street not Wall Street," and "Brownbaggers not Teabaggers".  Go to http://tinyurl.com/brownbagvigil.

 

  The Pledge of Resistance will go to Rep. John Sarbanes’ office, 600 Baltimore Ave., Suite 303, Baltimore, MD 21204, on Oct. 20 at 4:30 PM.  While inside, we will deliver a letter to urge the representative to pledge to vote against further funding of wars and for HR 4812: the Local Jobs for America Act.  From 5 to 5:30 PM, we will demonstrate on Bosley Ave.  against U.S. wars in the Middle East

 

48] Philadelphia peace vigil – Oct. 20

 

48] – Each Wednesday from 4:30 - 5:30 PM, the House of Grace Catholic Worker holds a weekly vigil for peace in Iraq outside the Phila. Federal Building, 6th & Market Sts. The next vigil is Oct. 20. Call 215-426-0364.

 

49] Westminster WIB vigil – Oct. 20                                

49] – WIB does a silent vigil mourning all violence the third Wednesday of the month.  The next vigil is Wed., Oct. 20 from 6:30 PM to 7 PM at the intersection of Martin & Patrick Sts in downtown Frederick.  Wear black, but bring no additional signs. 52] – From Thurs., Oct. 21 through Sat., Oct. 23 @ 2640 and elsewhere, participate in IDKE XII: Gender Justice.  This is the International Drag King Community Extravaganza with performances defying, reworking and undoing gender, thanks to the hard work of the Baltimore Gender Justice Collective in collaboration with the Charm City Boys.
