3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

5] – Chuck Michaels is now home, and he will continue his recovery through out-patient therapy.  He is doing very well, speaking well and regularly, getting around well, and also now has permission from his doctor to be left alone, that is unattended, as needed.

 

The big need going forward over the next few weeks is transportation for a portion of each day to the Sky Neurological Rehabilitation CenterPomona Square, 1700 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville 21208 - just inside the beltway. On a weekly basis, the web site at Caring Bridge will post the specific times that Chuck needs transportation assistance in getting to therapy. He wrote that he will continue until either Dennis Kucinich informs him the transfer will take place or his body gives out.

9] – The United Methodist Building, 100 Maryland Ave., N.E., WDC, is hosting a Nakba Photo Exhibit: The Story of the Palestinians, 1948 to 2009.   The Exhibit will be on display in the lobby from 9 AM to 5 PM through Tues., Feb. 24.

 

10] – The Peace Support Network is sponsoring a YouTube video contest. Create a short film based on the theme, "Create Peace". 11] – Witness Against Torture continues its 100 Days Campaign.  Go to www.100dayscampaign.org.   Groups have taken on each week through Apr. 30, and there will be daily vigils at the White House from 11 AM to 1 PM.  As well, there will be organized activities from film screenings to lectures and community meetings.  These activities are designed to mobilize people concerned about torture and keep sustained pressure on our elected officials to close Guantanamo with deliberate speed.  Witness Against Torture will have a team in D.C. for the duration of the campaign and will provide logistical support to all participants.

18] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

 

19] – The International Republican Institute & the East-West Center in Washington cordially invite you to attend a public talk Peacebuilding, State Building and Nation Building in Timor-Leste: Challenges to International Assistance featuring Atul Khare, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General for Timor-Leste and head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT).  The talk on Fri., Feb. 13 from noon to 1:30 PM will take place at the International Republican Institute, 225 I St., NW, 7th Floor, WDC 20005. Timor-Leste has undergone a number of crises in its recent past, most recently with the assassination attempts on President Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Gusmao on Feb. 11, 2008.  In 2006, riots broke out in Dili following rivalry within the military and police, leading to an increase in foreign peacekeepers and a new UN mission, the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT). With one of the largest UN peacekeeping operations in the world, Timor-Leste provides a prime example of the challenges of nation building.

21] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Feb. 13 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

25] – Baltimore bands step up to help support landmark Senator Theatre, 5904 York Road, Baltimore 21212.  Go to www.senator.com or call 410-435-8338.  This jam-packed weekend starts on Fri., Feb. 13 and continues through Sun., Feb. 15.  This is part of the plan to turn the historic movie house into a nonprofit entertainment showplace.

On Saturday, acoustic love songs & other traumas will fill the theater from 2 to 7 PM.  The Ken Kolodner duo, Smooth Kentucky (bluegrass), Ellen Cherry (trio), ilyAIMY duo and the Swing States Road Show.  Doors will open at 1 PM so you may enjoy gourmet vegetarian fare provided by Harvey Shugarman, owner of Harvey's Kitchen Custom Healthy Organic Meals.

 

On Sunday, it will be Left Bank Jazz Revisited, a tribute to Baltimore's Left Bank Jazz Society of the 60's and 70's, from 3 to 7 PM.  Performers are Michael Raitzyk Quartet, Ebony & Irony and Be Mo Jazz Ensemble.

 

Then from 7 to 11 PM on Sunday, enjoy the Psychedelic, Post-VD Massacre, a cleanup/benefit for The Senator Theatre.  There will be a Participatory Drum Circle.  Adrian Bond will perform while segments of METROPOLE are shown on giant projectors.   Other performers are TELESMA and Aligning Minds.

28] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

 

29] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., Feb. 14. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It. --Psalms 34:14." 34] – SOA Watch is holding a strategy meeting to prepare for lobby days.  The meeting will occur on Sun., Feb. 15, and Rev. Roy Bourgeois will attend. 35] – Activism in a New Era: A Washington Conversation with Global Implications takes place on Sun., Feb. 15 from 4 to 6:30 PM in Room 311 in White Gravenor Hall, Georgetown Univ. Whatever our policy focus, advocates for peace, social justice, and human rights face a new era in 2009. How can we chart a socially responsible course together through the insecurities of the day? How can we seize the rare opportunities before us to promote national and international well-being? 37] – On Sun., Feb. 15, from 5 to 6 PM, there will be an ecumenical peace vigil in Lafayette Park!  You are invited to join the latest in a series of peace vigils designed to give members of Washington area churches--Episcopalians, Methodists, UCC'ers, Presbyterians, Baptists, Mennonites, Quakers, Lutherans, Unitarians, Catholics and all others--a chance to pray together for an end to the tragic war in Iraq. The vigil is a locally organized witness affiliated with Christian Peace Witness for Iraq (CPWI).  The vigil will take place on the third Sunday of the month, at 5 PM, until the war comes to an end.

42] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  The next vigil is scheduled for Mon., Feb. 16. Call 410-233-0488.

44] – Since July 2007, when the Prince William Board of County Supervisors passed the first draft of the anti-immigrant resolution, the immigrant community in Prince William County has been under attack. The recent brutal beating of Agueda Dominguez by a Manassas Park police officer is a graphic illustration of how bad things have gotten. Mexicanos Sin Fronteras is responding to the call of the community to do something to stop such attacks. There will be a march and rally on Mon., Feb. 16 at 4 PM. Gather at the shopping center located on Centreville Rd and Manassas Dr. (behind Guapo’s Restaurant, 8498 Centreville Rd, Manassas Park, Va.) At 4:30 PM, the march will proceed down Mathis Ave., through the City of Manassas to the Prince William County Courthouse, Lee Avenue Manassas, VA 20110, where there will be a rally and candlelight vigil. 45] – In commemoration of Black History Month, there will be a talk Racism Raises Its Ugly Head from Oakland to Gaza- How Do We Fight Back? Hear guest speaker Larry Hales, national organizer for the youth & student group Fight Imperialism Stand Together [FIST].  He has just returned from Oakland, CA where he demanded justice for Oscar Grant who was killed by a BART police officer on New Years Eve.  Hales will speak on Mon., Feb. 16 at 7 PM at the Solidarity Center, 2011 N. 46] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  At the next meeting on Feb. 16, the agenda will include the review of Lobby Night for tough anti-spying legislation, the upcoming Lobby Night to keep the Guard at home and developments with the MSP spy scandal.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

47] – On Tues., Feb. 17 from 9 to 11 AM, Gareth Evans, former Australian foreign minister, Yoriko Kawaguchi, former Japanese foreign minister, and Jessica Mathews, Carnegie Endowment, will address "The International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament: Breaking the Stalemate." 52] – Jihan El Tahri’s 2007 documentary CUBA! AFRICA! REVOLUTION! (Aka “Cuba, an African Odyssey”) tells the previously untold story of Cuba’s support for African revolutions. This documentary unravels the story of the so-called Cold War, through the prism of its least known arena: Africa. Against colonialism, capitalism, and communism, the newly independent nations fought to gain real control of their own countries and their valuable natural resources. 64] – The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Committee is hosting its latest FILM & SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS VIDEO SERIES. The theme is First Amendment rights.  The next film is THE CAMDEN 28.  Director Anthony Giacchino asks the question, how far would you go to stop a war? On Aug. 22, 1971, twenty-eight activists broke into a Camden, NJ federal building to destroy draft files.  This documentary revisits that action and the subsequent trial. 67] – Sylvie Maunga Mbanga, a human rights lawyer and women’s activist from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is in the DC area waiting for asylum. She works with seven local organizations to end the horrific sexual violence against women in the eastern region of the Congo. She is eager to speak to audiences about her situation and that of the DRC.
