3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

5] – Chuck Michaels is now home, and he will continue his recovery through out-patient therapy.  He is doing very well, speaking well and regularly, getting around well, and also now has permission from his doctor to be left alone, that is unattended, as needed.

The big need going forward over the next few weeks is transportation for a portion of each day to the Sky Neurological Rehabilitation CenterPomona Square, 1700 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville 21208 - just inside the beltway. On a weekly basis, the web site at Caring Bridge will post the specific times that Chuck needs transportation assistance in getting to therapy. 7] – Start Loving began a fast at 12:01 AM on Thurs., Dec. 18, on Capitol Hill to call for a $200 billion of funding from warmaking to peacebuilding.  Go to   http://jesusgodgoodetcnjay.blogspot.com/. He wrote that he will continue until either Dennis Kucinich informs him the transfer will take place or his body gives out.

9] – The United Methodist Building, 100 Maryland Ave., N.E., WDC, is hosting a Nakba Photo Exhibit: The Story of the Palestinians, 1948 to 2009.   The Exhibit will be on display in the lobby from 9 AM to 5 PM through Tues., Feb. 24.

10] – The Peace Support Network is sponsoring a YouTube video contest. Create a short film based on the theme, "Create Peace". Show us your creativity and you could be given the grand prize of $1000 or three runner-up prizes.   All ages, school classrooms, not-for-profit groups, as well as individuals are urged to participate!  For complete details go to http://celebratingpeace.org/videos.cfm. 11] – Witness Against Torture continues its 100 Days Campaign.  Go to www.100dayscampaign.org.   Groups have taken on each week through Apr. 30, and there will be daily vigils at the White House from 11 AM to 1 PM.  As well, there will be organized activities from film screenings to lectures and community meetings.  These activities are designed to mobilize people concerned about torture and keep sustained pressure on our elected officials to close Guantanamo with deliberate speed.  Witness Against Torture will have a team in D.C. for the duration of the campaign and will provide logistical support to all participants.  Call Carmen Trotta at 202 277 9869.           

12] – The Baltimore branch of the Industrial Workers of the World [IWW] meets the third Thursday of the month.  Attend the next meeting on Feb. 19 at 7 PM at Red Emma’s, 800 St. Paul StCall 410-967-2202.

13] – Every 3rd Friday, observe the Iraq Moratoriumhttp://www.iraqmoratorium.com/. On Feb. 20, wear a black ribbon or armband! Hand out ribbons or armbands to others. Wear an anti-war pin. Call your representative and your senators and tell their staff that you expect them to do everything possible to end the war and bring the troops home!  The Capitol Hill switchboard number is 202-224-3121. Write your representative and your senators, as a handwritten letter has even more impact than a phone call. Hit your elected officials where it hurts, with a voided campaign contribution check. Write a letter to your local newspaper. Don't buy gas. Drive 10 MPH under the posted speed limit. Don't shop at all. Put a sign on your lawn or in your window or on your car. Write "Stop the War" or other slogans on the sidewalk in chalk.  Buy toy soldiers, put tags on them that say "Bring Me Home" and leave them in stores, parks, libraries, laundromats, anywhere people will find them. Email friends and family and urge them to sign the Iraq Moratorium statement and to take one of these steps, too.

17] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

18] – The Unseen Refugees: Colombians Seeking Refuge in Ecuador will be discussed on Fri., Feb. 20 from 3:30-4:30 PM in the WOLA Conference Room, 1666 Connecticut Ave., NW WDC. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) are pleased to invite you to a discussion Sister Janete Ferreira, director for the Migration and Refugee Pastoral of Ecuadorian Bishops Conference and Caritas Latin America and Caribbean Coordinator for Trafficking-Migration. Ecuador receives the most persons fleeing violence and seeking protection from the internal armed conflict in Colombia and its northern border area is believed to house an estimated 150,000 to 250,000 mostly undocumented refugees. Ferreira is a Scalabrini Missionary sister with a Masters in Sociology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

20] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Feb. 20 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

22] – Gimmie Shelter Productions continues to do benefits that raise consciousness about the state of homeless shelters and funds to help them serve the needy.  On Fri., Feb. 20 at 7:30 PM at Read Street Books, 229 W. 23] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 25] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

26] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., Feb. 21. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It. --Psalms 34:14." 27] – A forum "Turn the tide against racism, stand up for immigrant rights in your community" is happening on Sat., Feb. 21 from 2 to 4 PM at the Plymouth Congregation, UCC. 5301 N Capitol St. NE.

 

28] – Join the folks at the Washington Peace Center for a free screening of DEATH IN GAZA at 2:30 PM on Sat., Feb. 21 at Friends Meeting, 2111 Florida Ave. NW, WDC.  Documentarians James Miller and Saira Shah planned to produce an in-depth look at the culture of martyrdom and hate pervading the Middle East. In 2003, they chronicled the lives of three Palestinian adolescents growing up in war-torn Gaza. Miller and Shah also wanted to show the Israeli side of the dispute, but during filming, Miller fell victim to the conflict when Israeli forces killed him. This Home Box Office special relates the tragic story. Afterward: A Palestinian activist will share a discussion.

29] – On Sat., Feb. 21 at 7 PM, join people who have walked across six continents and 17 countries.  The Trail of Dreams World Peace Walkers are back in the USA to invite you to join a  gathering of indigenous traditional, Christian (in its many denominations), Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, New Age, Spiritual, Atheist, Agnostic and other people for the purpose of honoring and valuing the gift of diversity through prayer, ceremony, and compassionate dialog that takes on the energy of communities through which we will walk!  The gathering will be at St. Stephen's Church, 1525 Newton St. NW, WDC  20010. 34] – The next Baltimore Green Forum is on Sun., Feb. 22 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at the MD Presbyterian Church, 1105 Providence Road, Towson, 21286. 39] – On Mon., Feb. 23 from noon to 2 PM at 1761 N St., NW, WDC, Bill Corcoran, president of ANERA, will discuss his visit to Gaza where he reviewed ANERA's programs and the economic and humanitarian needs of Gazans after the recent war. ANERA is active in Gaza and also manages major economic development and humanitarian assistance programs in the West Bank, including Milk for Preschoolers, psychosocial programs and water and sanitation projects. 44] – On Mon., Feb. 23 at 7 PM, Witness Against Torture presents Rebiya Kadeer of the American Uighur Association at American University’s Ward Hall (Ward 1 – T Floor), Ward Circle, 4400 Mass. Ave. (There is bus service from Redline Tenleytown  Metro stop. Kadeer, a Uighur democracy leader often called the "Mother of the Uyghur People," will discuss the situation of the Uighur people in China and introduce you to DC's thriving Uighur community. The Uighurs (Wee-gurs) are a Muslim ethnic group in western China persecuted by the Chinese government. Ms. Kadeer spent 6 years in prison for criticizing China's human rights violations and has actively campaigned for the Uyghur people since arriving in the U.S.  The event is hosted by the American Univ. chapter of Amnesty International.

46] – There is a meeting of Ecolocity DC every Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM at the EMERGENCE COMMUNITY ARTS COLLECTIVE, 733 Euclid St. NW, WDC 20001.  It is for people who live in, or are interested in making D.C. a transition town starting with an intentional community that will encompass clean energy, freecycle, natural building, organic farming, community salvage, new urbanism, etc. The next meeting will be on Feb. 24. 61] – The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Committee is hosting its latest FILM & SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS VIDEO SERIES. The theme is First Amendment rights.  The next film is THE CAMDEN 28.  Director Anthony Giacchino asks the question, how far would you go to stop a war? On Aug. 22, 1971, twenty-eight activists broke into a Camden, NJ federal building to destroy draft files.  This documentary revisits that action and the subsequent trial. 66] – Sylvie Maunga Mbanga, a human rights lawyer and women’s activist from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is in the DC area waiting for asylum. She works with seven local organizations to end the horrific sexual violence against women in the eastern region of the Congo. She is eager to speak to audiences about her situation and that of the DRC.
