3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR]. It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed. It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

THE NOTICES LIST will include only notices of NCNR actions and related information and is open to any interested person to subscribe. It will be moderated to maintain focus & will include periodic notices about getting involved in NCNR national organizing. 4] – The Baltimore American Friends Service Committee office has assembled an exhibit Maryland Eyes Wide Open which details the Human Cost of the Iraq War and reflects the costs of war to the state of Maryland. The exhibit consists of at least 40 pairs of combat boots, representing the US military deaths from Maryland; civilian shoes, tagged with names and ages of a very small fraction of the tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis who have died; a representative pair of combat boots and 7 red poppies, representing the estimated number of wounded US military personnel (approximately 7 times the number of dead); and signs and literature detailing the human and financial costs of the war on the cities and counties of Maryland.

AFSC will help with logistics and contribute to your planning for auxiliary events or activities presented in conjunction with the exhibit. 5] – Start Loving is on a hunger strike 24/7 until late May on Capitol Hill. The Lincoln, a second carrier, is now threatening Iran , a virtual declaration of preemptive, illegal war. He is casting his vote for peace as loudly and heart-piercingly as possible.

6] – Dave Slesinger is seeking housing. He has to move from the Progressive Action Center as the building has been sold. Call him at 410-499-5403.

8] – On Thurs., May 8 at 7:30 PM, as part of the Catonsville Nine Commemoration, the film INVESTIGATION OF A FLAME by Lynne Sachs will be shown, followed by a panel discussion and music at the Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave. The discussion will focus on a contemporary version of the Catonsville Nine and include Joel Andreas, Willa Bickham, Lynne Sachs & Joby Taylor. 13] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

14] – On Fri., May 9 from noon until 4 PM, there will be a GAZA SOLIDARITY VIGIL outside the State Department, 23rd and C Sts., NW, WDC. It will highlight food shortages in Gaza and the oppression suffered at the hands of Israeli government. Beside the four-hour vigil, there will be an all day fast. Call 202-669-8419.

15] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., May 2 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St. , in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends Meeting and Stony Run.

34] – On Mon., May 12, there will be a presentation The Nakba: What Happened to the Palestinians When the Israeli State Was Established? Israel will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish state; Palestinians will be remembering the Nakba (catastrophe). 39] – Equal Justice USA is sponsoring a free screening of a new documentary, AT THE DEATH HOUSE DOOR on Tues., May 13 at 6:30 PM at All Souls Unitarian Church, Pierce Hall, 1500 Harvard St NW, WDC. The documentary is a personal and intimate look at the death penalty in the state of Texas through the eyes of Pastor Carroll Pickett, who served 15 years as a death house chaplain. In the course of this career, Pickett presided over 95 executions (and recorded an audiotape of his thoughts after each one) - including the world’s first lethal injection, also the execution of at least one man who is now thought to be innocent. 47] – The annual FRED B. BENJAMIN PEACE WRITING CONTEST, open to Maryland 7th or 8th grade students, is to focus on the themes of peace and social justice. The contest is sponsored by Anne Arundel Peace Action, Maryland Peace Action Education Fund and Benjamin Peace Foundation. A student should write no more than 1,200 words on the following topic: Envision an imaginary assembly at your school attended by Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, Jane Addams and Sojourner Truth. Based on what you think they would say, what advice would you give to make your school a more peaceful place?

The entry should be double-spaced and accompanied by a separate cover sheet which includes all of these the student’s name, address and phone number (or e-mail address), the school’s name, address and phone number and the name of the teacher sponsor, if applicable. Personal identifying information must not appear anywhere on the entry, which must be postmarked no later than Thurs., May 15. Prize money is awarded to four students. 48] – The Baltimore branch of the Industrial Workers of the World [IWW] meets the third Thursday of the month. Attend the next meeting on May 15 at 7 PM at Red Emma’s, 800 St. Paul St . Call 410-967-2202.

49] – Every 3rd Friday, observe the Iraq Moratorium - http://www.iraqmoratorium.org/. On May 16, wear a black ribbon or armband! Hand out ribbons or armbands to others. Wear an anti-war pin. Call your representative and your senators and tell their staff that you expect them to do everything possible to end the war and bring the troops home! The Capitol Hill switchboard number is 202-224-3121. Write your representative and your senators, as a handwritten letter has even more impact than a phone call. Hit your elected officials where it hurts, with a voided campaign contribution check. Write a letter to your local newspaper. Don't buy gas. Drive 10 MPH under the posted speed limit. Don't shop at all. Put a sign on your lawn or in your window or on your car. Write "Stop the War" or other slogans on the sidewalk in chalk. Buy toy soldiers, put tags on them that say "Bring Me Home" and leave them in stores, parks, libraries, laundromats, anywhere people will find them. Email friends and family and urge them to sign the Iraq Moratorium statement and to take one of these steps, too.

50] – On Fri., May 16 beginning with dinner at 5:30 PM, Gimmie Shelter Productions will do another benefit to get a water well dug in Kenya for Lutheran World Relief. The event will be at the Yabba Pot, 2433 St. Paul St . The performance begins at 7:30 PM and will include music and spoken word. Admission is $5, and does not include the cost of dinner. Writer/director Woody Allen plays Cliff, a failed filmmaker, and Martin Landau is Judah, a successful ophthalmologist. Both characters must deal with a moral crisis. Other performers are Mia Farrow, Anjelica Huston, Jerry Orbach, Alan Alda and Joanna Gleason. In this homage to Dostoevsky, Allen exposes his characters to moral quandaries and asks if they must pay a price for "crimes and misdemeanors." The film takes place during the Reagan-Bush years when administration officials were deeply involved in high crimes and some misdemeanors.
