31] – CCAN Action Fund [info@ccanactionfund.org] needs you
in Philadelphia on Tues., Oct. 8 & Wed., Oct. 9 from 9 AM to noon, noon to
3 PM or 3 to 5 PM ET. Don’t like phone
banking? Don’t like knocking on doors? You want to do something for Kamala
Harris that feels more concrete and immediate? You can get ten people per
day to vote for Kamala Harris just by standing on a sidewalk. A little-known
feature of Pennsylvania law means people can actually “vote by mail” on the
spot and in person at county elections offices. Stand outside those offices
throughout the Philadelphia area and ask passersby, “Have you voted? Want to
vote now? Takes 10 minutes.” Even
better: Unregistered voters can get registered and vote at the same time, using
the same method! This event to register Pennsylvania voters will continue
through Oct. 29. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/ccanactionfund/event/656862/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=engagingnetworks&utm_campaign=utm_ftv&utm_content=FTV-Canvass+PA+SINGLE-1024-c4
32] – On Tues., Oct. 8 at 1 PM ET, Mennonite Action is hosting an action hour to call U.S elected officials to support an arms embargo now and say no to regional war. Tell Congress "De-Escalate Now!" Join together with Mennonites from across the US and call our elected officials and implore them to stop arming Israel and call for immediate de-escalation in the region - including a permanent ceasefire - meaning no more attacks on Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, Syria or Palestine. The Biden-Harris administration and Congress is capable of stopping the bloodshed. President Biden and Congress must implement an immediate arms embargo to end the slaughter of innocent civilians and de-escalate the risk of a wider regional war. In these challenging and fast-paced times, with frequent unexpected surprises, self-care has never been more important. As peacebuilders, we often over-commit because it’s difficult to pass up an opportunity to make a positive difference. Our compassion often stretches our capacity to give just a little more. But as we all know; we must fill our own cup first. Rumi says it best: “Never give from the depths of your well but from your overflow.” Get tips to get through the election and end-of-year-flurries. Bring pen and paper and be ready to dance!

43] – War, technology, acceleration: Responding to the cries of the Earth through stability and contemplation will be presented on Tues., Oct. 8 from 8 to 9:30 PM ET. In this presentation, Bridgefolk board member Br. Denys Janiga, OSB, will talk about the relationship between war, ecology, and society with a focus on technology. He will discuss some of the recent technologies being deployed in modern conflicts, including Ukraine and Russia, Gaza and Israel, and Azerbaijan and Armenia. This will then move into a discussion of the notion of a technocratic paradigm, which Pope Francis has critiqued in his encyclical Laudato Si. Building on this, Br. Denys will use the work of Hartmut Rosa to better understand the temporal dimension of modern societies that he refers to as acceleration. The presentation will conclude with a Benedictine response through the vow of stability and contemplation.
