35] – Despite the crucial role that rural women play
in food production globally, almost nowhere in the world is this role
acknowledged let alone remunerated in supply chains. The contribution of
women is undervalued, unrecognized and invisible. But
how to address this age old issue in supply chains in a practical way that
not only empowers women but changes dynamics within families, strengthens
local economies, and the social fabric? This is exactly what has been achieved
in a pioneering initiative involving collaboration between a Nicaraguan
co-op, the ethical trading company Etico, and the Social Business
Network.
A premium that takes into account the unpaid work of women is added
to the cost of products: this premium is invested by the co-ops to support
vulnerable women, provide training in new skills, and to help women
to set up their own enterprises. The success of this initiative
has been validated by the University of Nottingham who have also highlighted
the potential for replicating this model in other parts of Latin America and
elsewhere.
On Wed., July 10 at 1:30 PM, join a UK-Nicaragua Solidarity Forum: What difference does it make when the unpaid work of rural women is recognized & remunerated in supply chains? This event will also celebrate the life of Florentina Perez on the third month since her passing, using her example to exemplify the role women play in production, community, solidarity & evolution. To register, send a message for the Zoom link to campaigns@nicaraguasc.org.uk

37] – Make phone calls to reelect Cori Bush! As a nurse, pastor, and activist, Cori has dedicated her life to fighting for justice, equity, and transformative change. Join the Sunrise Movement and the Cori Bush campaign to make phone calls and get out the vote in MO-01. Get Cori Bush reelected! UDP, AIPAC, and an extensive network of far-right billionaires, anti-abortion extremists, and GOP mega-donors are spending millions in their effort to defeat Cori Bush, having recruited her opponent to enter this race. It's going to take organized people power, talking to voters, to beat this big money.
No experience is necessary as first-timers will be trained at the beginning of every calling session. Return callers can dive right in. This phone bank will continue through Tues., Aug. 6 from 11 AM to 6:30 PM ET. On Wed., July 10 from 7 PM ET, RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/sunrise2024/event/632815/?emci=07c15d25-2c3e-ef11-86d2-6045bdd9e096&emdi=3098adcb-353e-ef11-86d2-6045bdd9e096&ceid=177631

41] – From accredited Japanese director Hideaki Ito comes SILENT FALLOUT which tells the untold stories of the victims of nuclear testing in America. The documentary will be at Annapolis Friends Meetings House on July 15, in Washington DC at American University on July 16, in Baltimore at 7 PM at Homewood Friends Meeting House, 3107 N. Charles St. on July 17 and at Towson University on July 27. Unfortunately, the US nuclear arsenal is stealing billions of tax dollars from numerous social programs. This documentary could lead to discussions about why is the US government wasting funds on weapons of mass destruction? Check out this list of upcoming screenings: https://us.fallout22.com/tour/?emci=730c6b43-12c9-ee11-85f9-002248223794&emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&ceid=#schedule
Director Hideaki Ito chronicles the story of radiation exposure and harm in the U.S., and the previously untold story of those who tried to expose it. In 1951, nuclear weapons testing began on the US mainland. Hundreds of miles away in St. Louis, Dr. Louise Reiss began collecting baby teeth from other mothers in her community. Through studying these teeth, Reiss found that American children—not just the so-called “Utah Downwinders”—had been exposed to dangerous levels of radiation. Silent Fallout traces these stories and others, journeying from Salt Lake City, to Virginia, to Missouri, to the United Kingdom, and to Japan, exposing the government deception behind the bomb.
