"Pratt Library workers are forming a union, Pratt Workers United. We are seeking pay equity for all, safer working conditions, benefits for part-time workers, and a voice in decisions that affect our work.” The workers voted to unionize

6] – Consider getting HOSPITALITY, the newsletter of OPEN DOOR: A prophetic discipleship community honoring the Black Jesus, Dorothy Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. The September/October 2022 issue contains a wonderful review by Claire Schaeffer-Duffy of Surely Goodness and Mercy by Murphy Davis, reprinted from The Catholic Worker, March-April 2022.  Davis, a co-founder of the Open Door Community, died in 2020.   You can subscribe to the newsletter or buy a copy of the book by calling 404-290-2047 or by emailing opendoorcomm@bellsouth.net.

7] – Another book to consider purchasing is Male Supremacy in the Catholic Church: An Insider’s View by Roy Bourgeois. His new book is both memoir and position-paper, and it makes the case that the Roman Catholic Church is a corrupt system that spits out truth-tellers. The crime he was excommunicated for was attending the ordination ceremony of Janice Sevre-Duszynska in Lexington, Kentucky, in August 2008. The ordination was under the auspices of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests.  The Vatican’s response has been to excommunicate any woman who has the audacity to see herself as a priest equal to a male priest. You can purchase a copy from Amazon or by Kindle.

Here are two quotes to contemplate: “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men. She is to keep silent.” – Timothy 1, 2:12-13.  “If the patriarchy that dominates the church is not dismantled and women are not treated as equals, the church will continue to diminish and, eventually, die.” – Roy Bourgeois.

10] – Held every year on May 21, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development celebrates not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. The United Nations General Assembly first declared this World Day in 2002, following UNESCO’s adoption of the 2001 Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, recognizing the need to “enhance the potential of culture as a means of achieving prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence.”  With the adoption in September 2015 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nations, and the Resolution A/C.2/70/L.59 on Culture and Sustainable Development adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2015, the message of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is more important than ever. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals can best be achieved by drawing upon the creative potential of the world’s diverse cultures, and engaging in continuous dialogue to ensure that all members of society benefit from sustainable development.

11] – Usually, the Baltimore Ethical Society, 2521 St. Paul St., Baltimore 21218, meets on Sundays, and there is a presentation of a platform address at 10:30 AM ET. On Sun., May 21, it will be “Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism.”  For too long, the religious right has masqueraded as a dispute over theology or a social movement preoccupied with cultural issues such as abortion.  Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: this is a political movement that seeks to gain power and impose its vision on all of society. America’s religious nationalists aren’t just fighting a culture war, they are waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy. By pulling back the curtain on the movement’s inner workings and leading personalities, Stewart explains how the movement works – and offers some ideas for mounting an effective resistance.

Stewart is an investigative reporter and author who has covered religious liberty, politics, policy, and education for over a decade. She is the author of The Good News Club: The Christian Right’s Stealth Assault on America’s Children (Public Affairs, 2012); and The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2022). Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, the Atlantic, the Guardian, Washington Post, The New Republic, and The New York Review of Books.  Email PRESIDENT@BMORETHICAL.ORG FOR ZOOM LOGIN INFORMATION.

12] – The American Muslims for Palestine [info@ampalestine.org] will do a webinar for Episode 3 of "Palestine in Session" titled “Al-Nakba: 75 Years of Catastrophe” on Sun., May 21 at 11 AM ET. This is a special webinar where the Palestinian Nakba is front and center. The Nakba in Arabic means catastrophe and rests in the collective memory of the Palestinian people as the 1948 climax of Zionism’s settler-colonial project that began in 1882. It represents the ongoing forcible displacement, ethnic cleansing, land theft, and systematic oppression of the Palestinian people. Therefore, 75 years since 1948, Palestinians are still living in Nakba times.  Catch a live discussion on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1900048317035684/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%2252%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22share_link%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%22invite_link_id%5C%22%3A249649144405540%7D%7D]%22%7D.

13] –   Two documentary films, Voices across the Divide and Born in Deir Yassin, pull back the carefully constructed curtain of “a land without people for a people without a land.” Since 1948, a monumental effort has been made to promote a romantic mythology of Israel's creation and to hide the brutal violence. But firsthand accounts by both the oppressor and the oppressed, the expeller and the exiled, reveal the ongoing wounds. Nothing is resolved by dialogue alone, yet nothing will be resolved without it. Any hope of coexistence begins when the historical truth is rediscovered and acknowledged. It begins here.

Watch the film for free at your convenience; then join the Q&A discussion on Sun., May 21 at 3 PM ET with Alice Rothchild, author, filmmaker, and Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School (Retd., Emad Moussa, Palestinian-British journalist, researcher, and human rights activist, Huda Giddens, Palestinian American educator, Nakba survivor, and Ahlam Muhtaseb (moderator), author, filmmaker, and Professor of Media Studies at CSUSB. 14] – Just Peace Advocates [info@justpeaceadvocates.ca] is hosting a webinar India’s G20 meetings in Kashmir camouflaging settler colonialism on Sun., May 21 at 11 AM ET.  Register at https://uqam.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwkdO2hqTIuGdAIxQO-WayNOMMx6j9U8eoR#/registration?link_id=7&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-shame-mount-allison-is-conferring-an-honorary-degree-for-deborah-lyons-on-nakba-day&email_referrer=email_1919734&email_subject=webinar-on-sunday-may-21-11-am-et-indias-g20-meetings-in-kashmir-camouflaging-settler-colonialism.  The intergovernmental forum, G20, is being hosted by India, its current president. As the nineteen member countries and various other stakeholders come together to discuss important issues of global economy, sustainable development, and climate change, India’s role as a host has raised many questions. An expert panel will examine the controversial issue of hosting G20 meetings in an internationally disputed region of Kashmir. Kashmir is subject to settler colonialism, forced and illegal demographic change, expropriation of land, economic extraction, and environmental and ecological degradation by the Indian state. With the Indian state busy in projecting a false normalcy in Kashmir, the reality of everyday Kashmiris subject to gross human rights violations is going unnoticed. The silencing of Kashmiris, particularly suppression of the work of journalists and human rights defenders, and illegal detention and persecution of ordinary Kashmiris must be centered as important nations come together to validate India’s G20 presidency.

15] –  On Sun., May 21 from 1:30 to 2:30 PM ET, the Black Lives Matter Interfaith Coalition will rally at the Baltimore City Public Schools Headquarters, 200 East North Avenue. It's been three years since George Floyd was murdered and eight years since Freddie Gray died in Baltimore City police custody. There is still so much work to be done. Our Black brother and sisters continue to die senselessly and tragically. There's been a backlash across the country: censorship of what can be taught in schools, book bans, and open hostility to policies that would promote diversity and address systemic racism. Your voice is still needed! Please bring signs with the names--both locally and nationally known--of our Black brothers and sisters who have been killed. Black Lives Matter Interfaith Coalition can be reached at BLMInterfaithCoalition@gmail.com.
