47] – Our
Revolution Maryland [barrie@ourrevolutionmd.com] wants you to know about a
rally on Thurs., Jan. 26 from 11:30 AM to 1 PM ET. Maryland's powerful Restaurant Association is
fighting hard to keep tipped workers down. Get over to their offices at 6301
Hillside Court, Columbia 21046. Justice
for workers is a core element of a free and fair society. In America today,
though, a few hundred families are pocketing billions off of the hard work of
millions of workers - whom they frequently pay a pittance. Join the Fight for
Worker Justice at https://www.mobilize.us/ourrevolution/event/548843/?link_id=1&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-join-baltimore-mayor-brandon-scott-for-lunch-monday&email_referrer=email_1797034&email_subject=rally-thursday-in-columbia-for-one-fair-wage.
Trying to survive in the hospitality industry can be especially challenging
because many are expected to supplement starvation pay with tips from
customers. Low-price sit-down restaurants like Denny's and IHOP are
particularly tough places to earn a living. One Fair Wage is aiming to change
this by guaranteeing servers and bartenders the same coverage under
minimum wage laws as any other worker.
48] – On Fri., Jan. 27 at 10 AM ET, check out The Near Crisis Project: Why What You Don't Know Can Hurt You, hosted by the Atlantic Council, 1030 15th St. NW, 12th Floor, WDC 20005. Join the Scowcroft Center’s Forward Defense program for a public conversation in person and via Zoom. This event will feature a panel of distinguished speakers from the University of Utah’s Near Crisis Project. Why do some near-crises escalate to crises and others defuse? How can policy makers in Washington DC and beyond manage the risk of escalation? And how can the United States and its allies predict when a crisis could—or will—occur? In a new research initiative, a multi-university team advance the concept of ‘near crisis.’ When there is a perceived threat to basic values and a finite time to respond (though no large-scale military hostilities for the moment), the dispute has not yet tipped into a full-blown crisis. At a time when the United States and its allies are faced with Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, an increasingly aggressive China, and North Korea’s launch of missiles over Japan, these researchers provide new tools and insights to help policymakers identify and de-escalate potential flashpoints around the globe. The idea for this gathering came from a discussion between two Peace Alliance board members and its Practicing Peace in School Leadership Council lead just as the world was going into lockdown as the pandemic was spreading in early 2020. The question on everyone’s mind was how can we stay connected when the scientists were telling us to separate for the good of our health? Go to www.peacealiance.org.

57] – The Campaign for Peace, Disarmament & Common Security [jgerson80@gmail.com] is hosting a webinar on Sat., Jan. 28 from 2 to 3:30 PM ET -- EUROPEAN PEACE MOVEMENTS. In unity there is strength. Peace movements in Europe are working for a ceasefire and negotiations to end the Ukraine War. They are organizing to oppose deployment of new U.S. nuclear weapons under the cover of NATO’s Nuclear Sharing doctrine and working in support of the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. They are deeply critical of NATO expansion and are working to cut their nations’ military budgets and ambitions to fund their health care and education systems. And they are challenging their governments’ racist responses to their immigration crises. I hope the Europeans realize that Russia invaded Ukraine, and the invaders are committing horrific war crimes. If you do not condemn a war of aggression, how can you say you are part of a "peace" movement? Register at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcvd-iprTMoHdTzWjVQQfWE9aDjR9Z7OPiP.
58] – The Environmental Justice Task Force is holding a meeting on Sat., Jan. 28 from 3 to 4:30 PM ET at the Enoch Pratt Free Library Cherry Hill Branch, 606 Cherry Hill Road, Baltimore 21225. Join Progressive Maryland at this meeting. Since 1985, the Baltimore Trash Incinerator’s health-harming toxins have reduced life expectancies for generations of black communities in south Baltimore. Additionally, the pernicious effects of the incinerator have caused some of the highest levels of asthma-related hospital visits in the country. During the 2023 Maryland General Assembly Session, legislation will be introduced to remove trash incineration from the states renewable portfolio standard. What’s more, if this legislation is passed, the trash incinerator would lose its renewable energy credits: this would significantly reduce its profitability. Come learn and be a part of the discussion:https://www.mobilize.us/progressivemaryland/event/546901/?referring_vol=5603154&share_context=dashboard-event-details&sharer_role=SharerRole.ORGANIZER.

“One is called to live nonviolently, even if the change one works for seems impossible. It may or may not be possible to turn the US around through nonviolent revolution. But one thing favors such an attempt: the total inability of violence to change anything for the better" - Daniel Berrigan
