45] – On Thurs., June 30 at 11 AM, check out Will the War in
Ukraine Push Iran and Russia to Compete? Four months have passed since the
Russian invasion of Ukraine, and it has had wide-ranging implications for
geopolitical and geo-economic trends in the Middle East. The war could lead to
the emergence of new strategic vacuums in conflict zones across the region
while reshaping Russian relations with energy players in the Middle East,
including Iran. Beyond the immediate assumption that the war will create new
opportunities for cooperation between revisionist powers like Iran and Russia,
it has also given rise to new potential conflicts of interest.

47] – The Project on Government Oversight [reply@pogo.org] wants you to join in on Thurs., June 30 from 2 to 3 PM ET to discuss America’s Ban on Books. The widespread banning of books foreshadows a troubling future. At the Fireside Chat, discuss the freedom to read. Register at https://www.crowdcast.io/e/lfdvtiv4/register?emci=1954635e-e8f7-ec11-b47a-281878b83d8a&emdi=c5441953-f3f7-ec11-b47a-281878b83d8a&ceid=246313. Book banning has become one of the most widespread forms of censorship in the United States. Librarians are reporting an increasing number of requests from parents and politicians to ban or censor books. Far too often, these requests specifically target books by or about people with underrepresented identities, such as people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, or people with disabilities. Literary and free expression advocates are fighting back and demanding their freedom to read.

50] – James Zogby [jzogby@aaiusa.org] is involved in a conversation on Thurs., June 30 from 2 to 3 PM ET with Jeremy Ben-Ami, founder and president of J Street, about U.S. complicity in the Israeli occupation and what we can do to end it. This program is in partnership with Churches for Middle East Peace, American Friends of Combatants for Peace, and J Street. Register at https://secure.everyaction.com/gmf0RNS2kkSZiO3f7DBpHQ2?emci=c2717e6c-f4f6-ec11-b47a-281878b83d8a&emdi=53f19ac7-c1f7-ec11-b47a-281878b83d8a&ceid=389907. Each year, the United States provides $3.8 billion dollars in military assistance to Israel. Despite a variety of Congressional mechanisms in place to ensure that American taxpayer dollars are not used to abuse human rights abroad, there is little transparency or supervision over the ways in which U.S. assistance to Israel is used. Without a clear understanding of how U.S. military assistance to Israel is used, Congress, and by extension the American people, remain complicit in the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory.
