Congress has finally taken steps to address reparations for slavery. In local communities, some Friends are also beginning to address this original sin.  Register for https://www.fcnl.org/events/hr-40-and-quaker-push-reparations?akid=24428.152065.5SGc5h&rd=1&t=16&utm_campaign=event&utm_medium=email&utm_source=ak&utm_term=24428.152065.5SGc5h.

48] –Massachusetts Peace Action [info@masspeaceaction.org] is inviting you on Wed., June 22 at 6:30 PM ET to engage in a discussion about the film The World Is My Country! The movie tells the story of a Broadway actor who was so mortified about bombing civilians in WW II and so determined to prevent WW III that he dared to interrupt the UN General Assembly to call on the delegates to unite. “If you won’t do it, step aside and a people’s world assembly will arise from our ranks to do it!” he shouted.  This bold act ignited war-weary Europe. Albert Einstein, John Paul Sartre, Simon de Beauvoir, and Albert Camus joined him. 20,000 people rallied with him to demand the United Nations to recognize the rights of humanity. The very next day, December 10, 1948, the Soviets stepped aside and let the UN unanimously pass the Universal Declaration of Human Rights! For the next 65 years, as a citizen of no nation, only the world, Garry took on border guards, guns and jail – in an audacious effort to inspire the people of our world to rise above the borders that divide us and build a bottom-up way we can outlaw war and ecocide, and create what he called, “a People-Powered Planet.”  This Event will feature excerpts from the film, but the first 100 registrants will receive a free link to watch the entire film before the event.  Arthur Kanegis, director of “The World Is My Country” is president of Future WAVE, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to shifting our culture of violence to a culture of peace.

51] –   On Wed., June 22 from 7 to 8 PM ET, join an event: Civil Disobedience & Nuclear Abolition. This 1-hour webinar will discuss the historic blockade of the UN 40 years ago and plans today for the use of nonviolent direct action to help rid the world of all nuclear weapons.  “Blockade the Bombmakers!” was the call that inspired more than 3,500 people — 1,700 of whom were arrested — from 34 states and 10 countries to come to New York City on June 14, 1982, in order to nonviolently shut down the UN missions of the world’s seven nuclear-armed countries. Closely following on the million-person June 12 antinuclear rally in Central Park, these determined activists took their demands directly to the nations threatening the world with their nuclear weapons. Of the 1,700 arrests more than 1,000 were at the U.S. Mission alone with the balance scattered among the missions of the Soviet Union, France, Britain, China, Israel, and South Africa. Only South Africa subsequently heeded the disarmament call by dismantling their nuclear weapons. 52] – On Wed., June 22 at 7 PM ET, tune in to What is the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) really up to?  The CPPIB is accountable first and foremost to the federal and provincial governments, not the contributors and beneficiaries. Over the years, the CPPIB has moved from real assets to equities, and from investments in Canadian infrastructure to foreign investments. With over $539B of the public pension at stake, tax payers should have transparency. Panelists will speak about the CPPIB and its investment in the military arms, mining, Israeli war crimes, and privatization of life sustaining public infrastructure including water in the Global South, and other alarming investments. The discussion will delve into what can be done to hold the CPPIB accountable for the public pension funds entrusted to it. Bill Quandt and Helena Cobban will have a conversation about Israel's nuclear arsenal! Quandt is the veteran Middle East affairs specialist who was the principal Middle East advisor in Pres. Nixon’s White House during the October 1973 Arab-Israeli war and later played the same role in Pres. Jimmy Carter’s White House.

There is an event every Wednesday at 7 PM ET, and every Saturday, starting at noon ET. Registration for these webinars is required. Please register at bit.ly/Ban-nukes-news. Registration for any one session gives you access to all the others in this series. On Sat., June 25 at noon, Tom Unterrainer will give a wrap-up on ICAN/TPNW’s Nuclear Ban Week.  Unterrainer is the head of European Nuclear Disarmament (END), a project of the UK-based Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, and is also Chair of Britain's own venerable Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

To be continued.
