35] – A real NAFTA
replacement must protect ALL workers: that means guaranteeing their right to
organize and ending the extrajudicial repression of activists. Since North
American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiations started, three labor
activists at the Media Luna gold mine southwest of Mexico City have been
murdered by anti-union vigilantes. A fourth, Oscar Hernández Romero, just
disappeared. Demand justice for the Media Luna Four and call for a NAFTA
replacement that truly protects the rights of North American workers. Wednesday
at 10:30 AM at the House Triangle (SE entrance of U.S. Capitol), Capitol
Driveway SE, WDC 20004. RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/justice-for-mexican-unionists-murdered-during-nafta-renegotiations?link_id=1&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-join-us-on-wednesday-to-demand-justice-for-mexican-unionists-murdered-during-nafta-renegotiations-2&email_referrer=email_665225___subject_863989&email_subject=join-us-in-dc-on-wednesday.
After decades of worker intimidation throughout Mexico and impunity for the
perpetrators, Mexican manufacturing wages are now 40% lower than in China. U.S.
firms have outsourced almost one million U.S. jobs to exploit these $1-2/hour
artificially low wages thanks to NAFTA’s lack of enforceable labor rights. But
since Donald Trump announced his NAFTA 2.0 deal last year, he has stonewalled
congressional Democrats’ calls to strengthen the agreement’s labor rights and
add real enforcement mechanisms to protect workers. Demand justice for Oscar
Hernández Romero, Quintin Salgado, Marcelino Sahuanitla Peña and Víctor
Sahuanitla Peña. A real NAFTA replacement must protect ALL workers: that means
guaranteeing their right to organize and ending the extrajudicial repression of
activists.

– On
Wed., Nov. 20 from 1 to 4:15 PM, attend the 2019 Korea Global Forum:
Envisioning a Peace Regime Process for the Korean Peninsula at the U.S.
Institute of Peace, at U.S. Institute of Peace, 2301 Constitution Ave. NW, WDC
20037. Visit https://www.usip.org/events/2019-korea-global-forum.
If 2018 was the year of high-profile summitry, 2019 has been the year of
stalemate for diplomatic negotiations on the Korean Peninsula. The United
States and North Korea were unable to come to an agreement that included
proportional denuclearization and peacebuilding measures. Meanwhile, North
Korea continues to produce fissile material and improve its ballistic
missile capabilities in the face of continuing economic sanctions, creating a
highly volatile and uncertain future for the region. Join USIP, in
partnership with the Sejong Institute and the South Korean Ministry of
Unification, for a discussion with experts and practitioners from the United
States and South Korea on the challenges and prospects of denuclearization, a
peace regime, and a peace economy for the Korean Peninsula—as well as featured
keynote remarks from the South Korean Minister of Unification Yeon-chul Kim.
38] – To reduce
political influence over legislative and Congressional lines, a growing number
of states are taking up bipartisan reforms such as Independent Redistricting
Commissions to ensure that districts promote the will of voters, not
politicians. Maryland, as one of the most gerrymandered states in the nation,
must join this movement. Join Common Cause Maryland and the League of
Women Voters of Maryland in Baltimore City to learn about California's Citizens
Redistricting Commission and how we can adopt a similar model here in Maryland
that will help Tame the Gerrymander! On Wed., Nov. 20 from 6 to 8 PM, hear from
California Commissioner, M. Andre Parvenu - a geographer, urban planner,
community outreach specialist, and a former Zoning Analyst with the Los Angeles
Department of City Planning. Learn how to join efforts this upcoming

42] –On Wed., Nov. 20 from 6:30 to 8 PM, get over to “Crossing
the Lines Between Us” with author Lawrence Lanahan, hosted by Enoch Pratt
Free Library, 400 Cathedral St., Baltimore 21201. This program is in
conjunction with Undesign the Redline, exhibited at Central Library November 1,
2019-January 31, 2020. Lanahan is the author of “The Lines Between Us: Two
Families and a Quest to Cross Baltimore’s Racial Divide.” In his deeply
reported, revelatory story, Lanahan chronicles how the Baltimore region became
so highly segregated and why its fault lines persist today. Writing from
the Fair Housing Act to the death of Freddie Gray and beyond, Lanahan describes
epic efforts to desegregate the Baltimore region and deconcentrate poverty in
West Baltimore. As Baltimoreans “cross the lines” in the book, one theme emerges
repeatedly: the struggle for self-determination. During the attempted
revitalization of 1990s Sandtown, for example, and during the protests
following Freddie Gray’s death, neighborhood leaders in West Baltimore worked
the lines trying to ensure that their communities remained in control of their
own destiny.
Lanahan
will speak with three Baltimoreans whose lives and work have drawn them to this
struggle: Sandtown resident Antoine Bennett, Dayvon Love, director of public
policy for Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, and Audrey McFarlane, the Dean
Julius Isaacson Professor of Law and associate dean of faculty research and
development at the University of Baltimore School of Law. See https://www.facebook.com/events/739056389925679/.
