In this groundbreaking exposé, Schrader shows how the United States projected imperial power overseas through police training and technical assistance—and how this effort reverberated to shape the policing of city streets at home. Examining diverse records, from recently declassified national security and intelligence materials to police textbooks and professional magazines, Schrader reveals how U.S. police leaders envisioned the beat to be as wide as the globe and worked to put everyday policing at the core of the Cold War project of counterinsurgency. This “smoking gun” book offers a new account of the War on Crime, “law and order” politics, and global counterinsurgency, revealing the connections between foreign and domestic racial control.  Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/359675128303545/.

Go to http://redemmas.org/.  “Where are you from?” was the question hounding Carby as a girl in post-war London. One of the so-called brown babies of the Windrush generation, born to a Jamaican father and Welsh mother, Carby’s place in her home, her neighborhood, and her country of birth was always in doubt. Emerging from this setting, Carby untangles the threads connecting members of her family in a web woven by the British Empire across the Atlantic.

Carby is a co-author of “The Empire Strikes Back: Race and Racism in 70s Britain” and author of “Cultures in Babylon: Black Britain and African America, Race Men, and Reconstructing Womanhood.”  Nathan "N.D.B." Connolly is an American historian and professor. He is the Herbert Baxter Adams Associate Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University and co-host of the U.S. history podcast BackStory.
