See the documentary “The Interrupters,” which tells the moving and surprising stories of three Violence Interrupters who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. From acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz, this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. The Interrupters captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities. The film’s main subjects work for an innovative organization, CeaseFire. It was founded by an epidemiologist, Gary Slutkin, who believes that the spread of violence mimics the spread of infectious diseases, and so the treatment should be similar: go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. One of the cornerstones of the organization is the “Violence Interrupters” program, created by Tio Hardiman, who heads the program. Imagine a world in which computers run our lives, food comes only in processed packets, and authoritarian governments pit people against each other in bloody battles. Wait, that sounds too familiar. Some of the films are "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Robocop" and "Battle Royale." Each week a different professor introduces the film, and each screening is followed by a discussion. The films will be shown on Mondays at 7:30 PM through Nov. 25 at Towson University, 8000 York Road. Come to this reflection on the witness offered by the life of Servant of God Dorothy Day (1897-1980). This year (2013) marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Worker Movement by Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day in 1933. It also marks one year since the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Fall Assembly voted unanimously to progress with the cause of Canonization of Dorothy Day, under the initiative of the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan. This gathering presents an opportunity for the Catholic Peace Movement and their Hierarchs to find concordances on the continued contribution that the Church has to make to the cause of peacemaking and in proposing the Gospel of Life to a culture often resistant to its message of nonviolent enemy Love. An open invitation is extended to all who wish to attend, especially the Bishops who will be gathering in Baltimore for the Fall Assembly of the USCCB. The Catholic peace gathering will conflict with the Military Chaplin’s Dinner held by the Pentagon in the Marriott hotel to which the Bishops are also invited but the public are not. All are welcome to St Vincent de Paul Church, nearby the Marriott Hotel to reflect on the life of Dorothy Day and issue of war in our time.
