8] – HELP DEFEND HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY! On Fri., Feb. 10 from noon until 3 PM, protest Chevron.  The starting point is outside the Organization of American States Main Building, 17th St. and Constitution Ave., WDC. At 12:30 PM, march to the offices of King and Spalding, the law firm representing Chevron!!! After over 18 years of litigation, 30,000 indigenous people and farmers in the Ecuadorian Amazon have won an historic $18 billion in damages from Chevron for the deliberate and decades-long contamination of their land and drinking water. But now, instead of cleaning up the contaminated sites and providing funds needed for health care, Chevron is trying to use the expansive corporate rights granted under the U.S-Ecuador Bilateral Investment Treaty to try to evade complying with the judgments made in U.S. and Ecuadorian courts. On February 11th and 12th, this international tribunal of three lawyers will meet in Washington, DC – hosted by the Organization of American States – to decide this "investor-state case".

Join the rally featuring tents, an inflatable fat cat, puppets, "Candidate Wal-Mart" and more to let the voices of the 99% be heard! Join the Washington Peace Center in solidarity with the AFL-CIO, SEIU, National Nurses United, Metro Labor Council, OurDC, and others. Go to www.dclabor.org.

15] – Defend Black History - Save Reads Drug Store! Hear Dr. Helena Hicks at http://youtu.be/pmYBO3dChwo provided by Bill Hughes.  Very little has been done to elevate and preserve the special history of Baltimore's Civil Rights movement -- which has national significance. The 1955 student sit-in to oppose segregation at Read's Drug Store was the first sustained and successful sit-in of the Civil Rights movement.  It predated many of the sit-ins that are well known nationally, and Dr. Helena Hicks was a participant.

The event is sponsored by the Brandywine Peace Community and many other organizations.  Call 267-994-9448

In this talk with accompanying slide presentation, Mike Reid will discuss the amazing ideas of Erasmus Darwin (Charles' grandfather who speculated on organisms originating from primitive ancestors), James Hutton (the 18th-century geologist who discovered the antiquity of the Earth and speculated on natural selection), Sir Charles Lyell (the geologist who inspired Darwin and later became his close friend), Alfred Russell Wallace (the naturalist who independently discovered organic evolution and natural selection), and others who while less well-known also made essential contributions. 38] – "Gender Equity in the Restaurant Industry" is an issue on Mon., Feb. 13 from 8:30 to 10:30 AM in B-338, Canon House Office Building, WDC.  The restaurant industry's treatment of women made headlines in the last few months in the context of the Presidential campaign. However, few reporters covered the real story: women make up the majority of the industry's more than 10 million workers, but suffer in its lowest-paying positions with little access to benefits. Moreover, 66% of the industry's 3.6 million tipped workers are women, for whom the federal minimum wage has been frozen at $2.13 for over twenty years. This makes the restaurant industry the only sector of the U.S. economy in which a lower wage for women is set by law and not just employer practice.  Call 202-559-7496 or email genderequityreport@rocunited.org.

To be continued.
