18] – Each Wednesday from 4:30 - 5:30 PM, the House of Grace Catholic Worker holds a weekly vigil for peace in Iraq outside the Phila. Federal Building, 6th & Market Sts. The next vigil is Jan. 26. Call 215-426-0364.

 

19] – Each Wednesday, the Northwest Greens hold a peace vigil from 7 to 8 PM outside the Borders Book Store, Germantown Ave. at Bethlehem Pike in Chestnut Hill, PA. The next vigil is Jan. 5. Call 215-843-4256 or email nwgreens@yahoo.com.  

 

20] – "Wal-Mart; The High Cost of Low Price" will be shown on Wed., Jan. 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Emery Recreation Center, 5701 Georgia Ave., NW, WDC (bus lines 70, 71 ,79). The event is free, and light refreshments will be provided.  Afterwards there will be a discussion about the impact Wal-Mart will have on the District of Columbia. 21] – Get involved with D.C. Council Action Day: Tell Wal-Mart to Respect D.C. on Thurs., Jan. 27 from 9 AM to noon at the John Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, WDC (Metro Center, Federal Triangle).  Join the Living Wages, Healthy Communities coalition for a grassroots advocacy day to tell our elected officials that we expect them to join us in demanding that Wal-Mart respect workers and the community. 22] – Join CODEPINK for the Grassroots Lobby Day for Civil Liberties on Thurs., Jan. 27 from 9 AM to 4 PM at the United Methodist Church Conference Room, 100 Maryland Ave. NE.  Email medea@codepink.org or call 415-235-6517.

 

Join the Bill of Rights Defense Committee on the Hill to bring your concerns about privacy and civil liberties to Congress, as part of Lobby Day for Civil Liberties.  Join them on Thurs., Jan. 27 from noon to 6 PM.  To sign up, visit www.BORDC.org or call 413-582-0110.  Oppose the Patriot Act, FBI surveillance of peaceful activist groups, and strip searches by the TSA.  The lobby day will include a morning briefing, meetings with your senators and representative, and an afternoon debrief.

 

23] – The WEEKLY ROUNDTABLE SEEKING A JUST PEACE IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL takes place from 12:30 - 1:30 PM on Thursdays at Potter's House, 1658 Columbia Road NW, WDC.  Join a civil discourse which explores the history, issues, myths, realities, and truth of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. 24] – Catch "THE PEOPLE SPEAK" film screening on Thurs., Jan. 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM at Busboys and Poets, 5th & K Sts., NW, WDC. Celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Howard Zinn (August 24, 1922 - January 27, 2010) by attending this community screening of THE PEOPLE SPEAK on the anniversary of Zinn's passing. It is a documentary that gives voice to those who spoke up for social change throughout U.S. history, forging a nation from the bottom up with their insistence on equality and justice.

25] – HAITI HAPPY HOUR FUNDRAISER is happening on Thurs., Jan. 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM at Busboys and Poets, 14th & V Sts., NW, WDC.  One year after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the Harvard Black Alumni Society of DC is hosting a fundraiser/awareness event in support of Haiti relief and recovery efforts. The goal is to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti through this event.  Go to http://www.hbasonline.org/.

26] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM at Lafayette Park facing the White House.  Join the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker and friends. Contact Art Laffin: artlaffin@hotmail.com.

29] – A vigil for Justice in Palestine/Israel (now in its 8th year) takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM at 19th & JFK Blvd., Philadelphia (across from Israeli Consulate.  It is sponsored by Bubbies & Zaydes (Grandparents) for Peace in the Middle East.
