37] – There is a meeting of Hiroshima/Nagasaki Peace Committee of the National Capital Area on Sun., Dec. 6 at 4 PM at the Peace House, 1233 12th St. NW, WDC.  During the meeting, Joan Drake will report about The World Conference Against A & H Bombs and discuss the mobilizing for the UN 5-Year Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference next May. 41] – On Mon., Dec. 7 from 6 to 8 PM, join Global Exchange and Iraq Veterans Against the War for a discussion on WAR and OIL at Busboys and Poets, 1025 5th St., NW.  Author Antonia Juhasz, director of the Chevron Program at Global Exchange and Hassan Jumaa Awad al Assadi, president, Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions will speak. The Juhasz book The Tyranny of Oil: The World's Most Powerful Industry--And What We Must Do To Stop It has been released in  paperback, updated with a new preface.  This is a fundraiser for the Washington, DC Chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War, and its chair Geoff Millard will also speak.

42] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 7, and the agenda will include a review of the emergency demo to protest escalation of the war in Afghanistan, plans for future anti-escalation protests and a January action in D.C.   Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

43] – THE EXONERATED is being performed on Mondays at 7:30 PM through Dec. 14 at the Everyman [sic] Theatre, 1727 N. Charles St. This is Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen’s 2002 play, which shares six true accounts of wrongfully accused Death Row inmates and the deeply flawed U.S. justice system.  Call 410-752-2208. 44] – On Tues., Dec. 8 from 2 to 3 PM, the Coalition On Human Needs presents a webinar on Hunger in America.  One in six U.S. citizens is in a struggle against hunger.  In just one year, the number of people in households that sometimes lacked the money for enough nutritious food rose from 36 million to 49 million - the highest number on record. Among them were 17 million children - 4 million more in 2008 than in 2007. A number of presenters will discuss the problem in a forum moderated by George A. 48] – Join a “Cost of Delay” vigil to remember those that are paying the dire costs of delay on healthcare reform on Tues., Dec. 8 at 5:30 PM at Mt. Vernon’s Washington Monument called by MoveOn.org.  Recent Harvard studies have shown that 45,000 people die each year as a result of not having health insurance and that half of all bankruptcies are related to medical bills adversely affecting over two million people annually.  Sign up to hand out flyers at the Waverly Saturday Farmers Market for a two-hour stint.  Email Brian at bradygate@verizon.net with your time and cell phone number.

 

49] – On Tues., Dec. 8 at 7 PM, see the final compelling episodes of UNNATURAL CAUSES-- Is inequality making us sick? at Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church, 3215 Powder Mill Rd., Adelphi, MD.  One reason health care costs so much is that our society invidiously fosters unnecessary illness. Smart prevention requires a broad understanding of how that happens. This documentary explores causes and solutions for alarming economic, racial and social differences in people's health. Produced in 2008 by California Newsreel with Vital Pictures, it has been presented by PBS.  An audience discussion will follow, to be led by a representative of Maryland Health Care for All. This program features two half-hour episodes:  Collateral Damage - How chronic disease patterns track with underdevelopment and military presence in places as far flung as the Marshall Islands and Springdale, Arkansas.  Not Just a Paycheck - Why the health effects of unemployment differed widely, along with national social policies, in case studies of layoffs in Michigan and Sweden.

54] – The class Breaking Rank: Soldier-Led Resistance Movements continues each Wednesday from 8 to 10 PM until Feb. 17 at the Baltimore Free School, 1323 N. Calvert. St. There is no charge. Attendees of the class will leave with an understanding of the importance of military resistance in the creation of successful social movements and ideas of ways to effectively participate as allies in the current soldier and veteran-led anti-war movement. 55] – On Thurs., Dec. 10 from 10:30 – 11:30 AM, in Lafayette Park, TASSC invites you to commemorate United Nations Human Rights Day and to publicly call on President Obama to rid the world of torture by holding those who torture accountable. There will be a call for an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, for war leads to torture.

 

56] – On Thurs., Dec. 10, the WEEKLY ROUNDTABLE SEEKING A JUST PEACE IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL takes place from 12:30 - 1:30 PM at Potter's House, 1658 Columbia Road NW, WDC.  Join a civil discourse which explores the history, issues, myths, realities, and truth of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. 61] – Transition Town Takoma and The Center for A New American Dream present a screening of NO IMPACT MAN on Fri., Dec. 11 from 7 to 9 PM at Seekers Church, 276 Carroll St NW, WDC 20012 (1 block from the Takoma Metro Station). NO IMPACT MAN, an Oscilloscope film, tells the story of Colin Beavan’s decision to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for a full year. It means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator. It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, buses, or airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material consumption, and no garbage. No problem – at least for Colin. But when his wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the No Impact Project has an unforeseen impact of its own. 62] – There’s a “No You Can’t!” Rally at the White House on Sat., Dec. 12 from 11 AM to 4 PM.  This is a call for Unity Among Peace Movement Groups against Obama War Escalation.  Over 100 leading peace activists have called for the ‘Emergency Anti-Escalation Rally, “ organized by End US Wars, a newly formed coalition of national and grass-roots antiwar organizations, with endorsements from leading peace leaders.  Some of the speakers are Cynthia McKinney, Sen. Mike Gravel, Kathy Kelly, Chris Hedges, David Swanson and Phyllis Bennis. 

 

63] – Gimme Shelter Productions will hold the first in a series of benefits called "WINTER IN AMERICA".. on Sat., Dec. 12 at 6 PM.  This performance, for Sarah's Hope Shelter, will feature music & poetry by Auset, Alan Barysh, Robin Gunkel, In The Clear Duo, Jasaga, Suzanne X and Marcus Colasurdo.  Admission is $5 with donations of children's gloves, socks, hats, sweaters gladly accepted! 65] – Baltimore United for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM on Mon., Dec. 14 at the AFSC, 4806 York Road. The BUPJ agenda will focus on reviewing the anti-escalation protest on Dec. 2, getting ready for the legislative session in Annapolis and developments with UFPJ national.  As this meeting ends, the Pledge meeting will begin. 

 

66] – The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Committee is hosting its latest FILM & SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS VIDEO SERIES. The theme is Poverty and its Manifestations.  The last film in the series is KING CORN [USA, 2077], and it will be shown on Fri., Dec. 18 at a private home.  If interested in seeing the DVD, RSVP to Max at 410-366-1637.

 

In KING CORN, producer and director Aaron Wolff follows the saga of Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, who move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from.  With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil.  But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions.
