3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

8] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore will be visiting the office of Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger on Thurs., July 9 at 4:30 PM.  Meet in the lobby at 4:15 PM at 375 W. 13] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

14] – There is a peace vigil to support the Congo every Friday, 4 to 6:30 PM at the Rwandan Embassy, 1714 New Hampshire Ave, NW.  Call the Rwandan Embassy at 202-232-2882 and register your concern about Rwanda's aggression towards the Congo.

15] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., July 10 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

16] – Starting Fri., July 10 through Sun., July 12, the National Assembly to End the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and Occupations, a national network of hundreds of peace groups, is holding its second annual meeting to discuss and formulate dates for mass actions in the coming year.  At the conference at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, speakers include Cindy Sheehan, Col. Ann Wright, David Swanson and others. Progressive Democrats of America PDA will host a workshop on lobbying with Paul Kawika Martin, Peace Action's National Organizing, Political, and PAC Director, and there will be a host of other informative gatherings.  

The purpose of the National Assembly and the conference is to bring members of the peace movement together to democratically decide how to move forward together. Each participant in the conference will be voting on the action proposals: one person, one vote. Very reasonable overnight room rates, as low as $26/night at the college are available. 17] – The Cuba Caravan dinner and speaker will be at the Meeting House (in the Oakland Mills Village Center), 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, Maryland 21045, on Fri., July 10.  This is the 20th Pastors for Peace Cuba Caravan, and the speaker is Claudia de la Cruz.  The suggested donation is $5 for the event, which will include a beans & rice dinner. Join Howard County Friends of Latin America (HoCoFoLA), the Baltimore-Matanzas Sister City Association and the Maryland-Cuba Friendship Coalition in the welcome from 6:30 to 9 PM of the “caravanistas” on their way to Cuba. 18] – On Fri., July 10 at 6:30 PM, watch the Oscar-nominated film TROUBLE THE WATER at the Public Welfare Foundation, 1200 U St., NW. Following the film’s screening, Kimberly Rivers Roberts, the main character and a rising hip-hop artist, will join with ONE DC members to discuss unnatural disasters in the District and ways to prevent them. 21] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 24] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

25] There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., July 11.  Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 26] On Sat., July 11 at noon, SunShine Tours & Travel is going to the place in Maryland where Sister Harriett Tubman was enslaved and escaped. 31] – On Sun., July 12 at 1 PM., Bette Hoover will do a talk The Bedouins vs. the State of Israel: From Freedom to Fear, at the Howard County Central Library,  Little Patuxent Pkwy. and South Entrance Road, Columbia, MD 21044.  She recently returned from a trip to the Negev Desert where she stayed with a Bedouin family. 33] – The Brandywine Monthly Potluck Supper & Program is the 2nd Sunday of the month starting at 4:30 PM with a potluck dinner at University Lutheran Church, 3637 Chestnut St., Phila., PA. Bring main dish, salad, or dessert to share. The program begins at 5:30 PM.

On Sun., July 12, there will be a special showing of THE DAY AFTER TRINITY: J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb [1980]. 36] – On Mon., July 13 starting at 9 AM through Fri., July 17 at 4:30 PM, take in the program 8th Annual Human Rights on the Hill. The theme is The U.S. & The U.N.: From Reflection to Realization of Human Rights in America. The course will be taught at the Univ. of the District of ColumbiaDavid A. Clarke School of Law, 4200 Conn. Ave. NW, Building 39, Room 205, and is organized by the Hawaii Institute for Human Rights and Four Freedoms Forum.  There is no charge, but tax exempt donations would be welcome. 37] – New Hope For Peace: What America Must Do To End The Israel-Palestine Conflict is hosted by United States Institute of Peace, 2nd Floor Conference Room, 1200 17th St. NW, WDC 20036, on Mon., July 13 from 10 AM to noon. Former President Jimmy Carter, former Secretary of State James Baker, and former national security advisors Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft speak about America's role in crafting peace between Israel and Palestine in Landrum Bolling's newly released short film. USIP will follow the screening with a discussion.  The panel members are Ziad Asali, president, American Task Force on Palestine, Dr. Eliot A. Cohen, Johns Hopkins University (invited), and Toni G. Verstandig, senior policy advisor, Center for Middle East Peace & Economic Cooperation. The moderator will be Samuel W. Lewis, former U.S. Ambassador to Israel.

39] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  The next vigil is scheduled for Mon., July 13. Call 410-233-0488.

 

40] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  The next meeting will be July 13, and the agenda will include the July 9 visit to Rep. 41] – On Tues., July 14 from 8 to 9 AM, Gen. Robert Kehler, U.S. Air Force Space Command, will discuss "Deterrence, Space, Homeland Defense, Cyber: New Security Challenges," as part of the NDUF-NDIA seminar series. 44] –  There is a meeting of Ecolocity DC every Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM at the EMERGENCE COMMUNITY ARTS COLLECTIVE, 733 Euclid St. NW, WDC 20001.  It is for people who live in, or are interested in making D.C. a transition town starting with an intentional community that will encompass clean energy, freecycle, natural building, organic farming, community salvage, new urbanism, etc. The next meeting will be on July 14. 45] – The Baltimore Free School is getting off the ground, though the space near Red Emma's is no longer available. 54] – Baltimore United for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM on Mon., July 20 at the AFSC, 4806 York Road. The BUPJ agenda will focus on planning two events, a town hall meeting in September at which Rep. Donna Edwards will be invited and a forum to get ready for the legislative session in Annapolis.  As this meeting ends, the Pledge meeting will begin.

The mission of the Crabshell Alliance is to stop the construction of new nuclear power plants in Maryland, promote clean, safe, sustainable, and affordable energy, and educate the public about the hazards of nuclear power.

57] – The annual Faith and Resistance Retreat sponsored by Jonah House and Dorothy Day Catholic Worker - entering together into a praxis of reflection, action, reflection - is happening Wed., Aug. 5 through Sun., Aug. 9.  The retreat will include reflections on two films - ORIGINAL CHILD BOMB, a documentary based on Thomas Merton's book by the same title, and ON PAPER WINGS, a documentary about Japan’s secret balloon bomb project.

58] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore hosts an End the War! End the Occupation! rally on Thurs., Sept. 3 from 5 to 6:30 PM in Mount Vernon at Centre & Charles Sts.  The Pledge gathers in Mount Vernon on the first Thursday of the month to protest the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.
