3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

8] – The Smithsonian Folklife Festival continues through Sun., July 5 from 11 AM to 9 PM. The Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage celebrates cultural traditions around the world through the Folklife Festival, which includes daily and evening music and dance performances, crafts and cooking demonstrations, storytelling and discussions of cultural issues. The themes of the 2009 program will be Giving Voice: The Power of Words in African American Culture, The Americas: A Musical World and Wales Smithsonian Cymra. Admission is free. 9] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore hosts an End the War! 12] – "And now, DECLARE PEACE!" on Fri., July 3 at noon at Independence Mall, Philadelphia, PA.  Stop the Wars; End the Violence, from handgun to H-Bomb.  Join with peace, justice and anti-war activists, anti-violence and gun control advocates, earth and community partners, celebrating our freedom and independence, by making a declaration for justice and peace. with speakers, music, street theater, and public declaration at Independence Mall, Market Street, between 5th & 6th Sts., followed by bell-tolling vigil in front of Independence Hall to stop the wars and end the violence, from handgun to H-Bomb. 15] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

16] – There is a Human Rights Mobilization on Fri., July 3 from 3 to 4:30 PM at the CONVENTION CENTER, 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW, WDC 20001.  American Muslims (with the support of concerned citizens from the non-Muslim community) will spearhead a three-part initiative to draw attention to, and educate the public on, the enormous gulf that still exists between promise and fulfillment, and how this socio-political deficiency within the American body-politic has impacted the Muslim community (globally) post 9/11. It will begin with a press conference, followed by a rally outside of the convention center. These are the issues that will be addressed: (1) The relentless targeting of Muslim organizations, (2) the insertion of agent-provocateurs into the Muslim community, (3) the oppressive use of “conspiracy law” to impose punishments on Muslim defendants which are often more harsh than what convicted murders receive in U.S. courts; (4) to protest the innocent lives lost (“collateral damage”) to wrong-headed U.S. foreign policy in the so-called war on terrorism; (5) and to protest the war against the Palestinian people (especially in Gaza)!  Call 301-762-9162.

17] – There is a peace vigil to support the Congo every Friday, 4 to 6:30 PM at the Rwandan Embassy, 1714 New Hampshire Ave, NW.  Call the Rwandan Embassy at 202-232-2882 and register your concern about Rwanda's aggression towards the Congo.

18] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., July 3 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

21] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 23] – Members of the Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore will make its annual trek to Fort Meade to protest the illegal operations of the National Security Agency on Sat., July 4.  The activists intend to protest from 10 to 11 AM.  To participate, email Max at mobuszewski at verizon.net.

25] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

26] – Picnic for Peace on Sat., July 4 from noon to 4 PM.  Frederick Friends Meeting (Quakers), Women in Black Frederick, The Peace Resource Center and Unity Church in Frederick are all co- sponsors of the 6th Annual Picnic For Peace to be held in Baker Park adjacent to Schifferstadt Museum. 27] – The Change We Knead Now: Bake Bread for World Peace is happening on Sat., July 4 at noon.  Bake bread for WORLD PEACE using the sun in Lafayette Park, WDC. Besides baking bread, the group will have a petition with many demands, including freeing Leonard Peltier.

28] There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., July 4. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 32] – Every Sunday until Nov. 3, from 4:30 to 6 PM at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Aves., near Barnes & Noble and the Landmark Theaters, there will be a peace vigil organized by Bethesda Friends. Everyone welcome to participate!

36] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  The next vigil is scheduled for Mon., July 6. Call 410-233-0488.

 

37] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  The next meeting will be July 6, and the agenda will include the July 4 visit to the National Security Agency, planning a visit to Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger’s office on July 9 and organizing other antiwar activities.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

38] – There will be a meeting of the Frederick Peace Resource Center on Mon., July 6 at 7:30 PM at 4 East Church St. Call Gus Fahey at 301-663-6117.

39] – CHURCHES UNITED FOR JUSTICE & NAACP HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON CHURCH KIOSK SCAM on Tues., July 7 at 10 AM at the United Baptist Missionary Convention Office, 940 Madison Ave., Baltimore 21217. The churches will indicate they have been defrauded out of tens of thousands of dollars and their potential liability could be in the millions of dollars.  Maryland Attorney General Gansler has consented to meet with a select group of representatives regarding this matter.  It will be the objective of the group to encourage the Attorney General to pursue legal action against certain involved companies and to provide relief to the churches from these alleged practices, just as the Attorney General for the District of Columbia has done.  Call 301-325-8577.  Go to www.naacp-md.org.

41] – There is a vigil to say "War Is Not the Answer" each Tuesday since September 11, 2001 at 4806 York Road. Join this ongoing vigil.  The next vigil is July 7 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

42] –  There is a meeting of Ecolocity DC every Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM at the EMERGENCE COMMUNITY ARTS COLLECTIVE, 733 Euclid St. NW, WDC 20001.  It is for people who live in, or are interested in making D.C. a transition town starting with an intentional community that will encompass clean energy, freecycle, natural building, organic farming, community salvage, new urbanism, etc. The next meeting will be on July 7. 43] – The Baltimore Free School is getting off the ground, though the space near Red Emma's is no longer available. 50] – On Thurs., July 9, the WEEKLY ROUNDTABLE SEEKING A JUST PEACE IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL takes place from 12:30 - 1:30 PM at Potter's House, 1658 Columbia Road NW, WDC.  Join a civil discourse which explores the history, issues, myths, realities, and truth of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. 51] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore will be visiting the office of Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger on Thurs., July 9 at 4:30 PM.  Meet in the lobby at 4:15 PM at 375 W. Padonia Road, Suite 200, Timonium, MD 21093.  We go to his office to discuss why he voted to further fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  At 5 PM, we will demonstrate on Padonia Road until 6 PM against war funding.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

52] – There will be a lecture & book signing by Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi on Thurs., July 9 from 6 to 8 PM at Busboys and Poets, 14th and V Sts. NW, WDC, hosted by the US Campaign to end the Israeli Occupation.  Go to http://endtheoccupation.org/article.php?id=2232.

53] – Starting Fri., July 10 through Sun., July 12, the National Assembly to End the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and Occupations, a national network of hundreds of peace groups, is holding its second annual meeting to discuss and formulate dates for mass actions in the coming year.  At the conference at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, speakers include Cindy Sheehan, Col. Ann Wright, David Swanson and others. Progressive Democrats of America PDA will host a workshop on lobbying with Paul Kawika Martin, Peace Action's National Organizing, Political, and PAC Director, and there will be a host of other informative gatherings.  

The purpose of the National Assembly and the conference is to bring members of the peace movement together to democratically decide how to move forward together. Each participant in the conference will be voting on the action proposals: one person, one vote. Very reasonable overnight room rates, as low as $26/night at the college are available, though guaranteed room reservations must be made by Thurs., July 2. Organizations and individuals attending the conference are encouraged to submit action proposals spelling out what they believe the antiwar movement should do in the period ahead. Send to natasembly@aol.com  before the deadline Tues. July 7.

54] – The Cuba Caravan dinner and speaker will be at the Meeting House (in the Oakland Mills Village Center), 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, Maryland 21045, on Fri., July 10.  This is the 20th Pastors for Peace Cuba Caravan, and the speaker is Claudia de la Cruz.  The suggested donation is $5 for the event, which will include a beans & rice dinner. Join Howard County Friends of Latin America (HoCoFoLA), the Baltimore-Matanzas Sister City Association and the Maryland-Cuba Friendship Coalition in the welcome from 6:30 to 9 PM of the “caravanistas” on their way to Cuba. 55] – On Sun., July 12 at 1 PM., Bette Hoover will do a talk The Bedouins vs. the State of Israel: From Freedom to Fear, at the Howard County Central Library,  Little Patuxent Pkwy. and South Entrance Road, Columbia, MD 21044.  She recently returned from a trip to the Negev Desert where she stayed with a Bedouin family. 56] – Baltimore United for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM on Mon., July 20 at the AFSC, 4806 York Road. The BUPJ agenda will focus on planning two events, a town hall meeting in September at which Rep. Donna Edwards will be invited and a forum to get ready for the legislative session in Annapolis.  As this meeting ends, the Pledge meeting will begin.

57] – The annual Faith and Resistance Retreat sponsored by Jonah House and Dorothy Day Catholic Worker - entering together into a praxis of reflection, action, reflection - is happening Wed., Aug. 5 through Sun., Aug. 9.  The retreat will include reflections on two films - ORIGINAL CHILD BOMB, a documentary based on Thomas Merton's book by the same title, and ON PAPER WINGS, a documentary about Japan’s secret balloon bomb project.
