37] – Justin Kwasa [feedback@lcv.org] wants you to get involved in the FREEDOM TO VOTE RELAY AND RALLY from Wed., Oct. 20 through Sat., Oct. 23.  Sign up at https://freedomtovoterelay.org/. Protecting our right to vote has never been more important — and yet serious action from Congress continues to stall. That's why you are asked to join in. There are multiple events to choose from — come to one or all!

On Wednesday, the Senate is expected to vote on the Freedom to Vote Act, the most comprehensive voting rights bill since the Civil Rights movement. But Senate Republicans are expected to once again use the filibuster to block it from passing. This will be the third time this year a pro-democracy bill has been blocked by this archaic rule.

The Freedom to Vote Relay is in support of passing three critical bills that provide the needed reforms to protect our democracy from the influence of corporate polluters -- Passage of the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and D.C. Statehood, to make sure that our democracy is open and accessible to everyone.

But we can't do this without you. We are asking supporters in the DMV, including you to join the fight as a relay participant or attend any of the multiple events along the routes. Here's how you can get involved:

Wednesday, October 20 — West Virginia Car Caravan -- travel in the caravan heading from Charleston to Charles Town highlighting to Senator Manchin that West Virginians support voting reforms.

Thursday, October 21 — Maryland Bike Relay in Harpers Ferry WV, Point of Rocks, MD, and Glen Echo, MD.

Friday, October 22 — Walk into D.C. -- starting at Glen Echo, cross into the District and go to a Shindig at Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street in the evening

Saturday, October 23 — Rally at the finish line at the Capitol featuring Martin Luther King III and many other special guests as we pass the baton to the Senate to finish the job. Email Justin at jkwasa@lcvef.org if you have any questions.

38] – The Interfaith Immigration Coalition [media@interfaithimmigration.org] is inviting you on Wed., Oct. 20 from 10 to 11 AM ET to join the Moral Call for Citizenship. The #Faith4Citizenship Social Storm is designed to urge our elected officials to do whatever it takes to secure permanent protections for as many immigrants as possible! Go to https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ru63mFUNi-xA6JfJDP-jlr1PB--CzRDUGciNWLe8-Fg/edit.

39] – Check out Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace: The Rise, Demise, and Revival of Arms Control on Wed., Oct. 20 from noon to 1 PM EDT. You’re invited to the book launch of “Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace: The Rise, Demise, and Revival of Arms Control,” by Stimson Co-founder Michael Krepon. The geometry of nuclear competition has never been more complex. China’s nuclear force structure is growing rapidly. Russia and the United States have sloughed off treaties to facilitate freedom of action. Traditional arms control seems to be at an impasse. Some want nuclear prohibition; others demand ambitious agreements of far broader scope. The U.S. domestic consensus on treaty-making is broken. Arms control was the most significant unacknowledged diplomatic achievement of the Cold War, but it is now out of favor even as nuclear dangers rise. How did something so successful become so dispensable? Revival requires adaptation and ingenuity. Krepon details next steps and where we can go from here. The sponsor is Stimson Center, and the speakers are Dr. Barry M. Blechman, Stimson Center; Michael Krepon, Stimson Center; and Brian Finlay, Stimson Center. RSVP at https://www.stimson.org/events/.

40] – Cynthia Lazaroff [cynthialazaroff@gmail.com] wants you to participate on Wed., Oct. 20 at noon ET in a webinar "Indigenous Wisdom, the Nuclear Ban Treaty & Activism to Transform Our Nuclear Legacy." Hear from Ambassador Elayne Whyte Gomez, Marian Naranjo, Susi Snyder and Shannon Biggs with an opening blessing for peace by Kumu Hula Puna Dawson. Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZItcOmrrTkpHtALlnf4odNiaG10TXdF0Dlv.

41] – Join activists around the country at a virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support of the Freedom to Vote Act! Our democracy is in crisis: with redistricting around the corner and hundreds of voter suppression laws being introduced in states across the country, we do not have time to wait. Every day we’re getting closer to a very real deadline to take action. If the Senate does not overcome the filibuster and pass this legislation, states may not have enough time to implement the legislation’s regulations before the 2022 midterm elections! Join activists around the country at a Common Cause virtual phonebank to urge voters in key states to demand their senators’ support the vote! RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/commoncause/event/376178/ to call on Wed., Oct. 20 from 4 to 6 PM ET and 6 to 8 PM ET.

42] – Zach VanHouten, People For the American Way [alerts@pfaw.org] is asking you to join in on Wed., Oct. 20 from 5 to 7 PM ET with Advocacy Alliance Phonebank with VA Turnout Project.  Help get out the vote in Virginia by calling or texting voters – the election is just a few weeks away! Go to https://www.mobilize.us/pfaw/event/421165/.  Phone banking or texting will also take place on Oct. 27.  In what will be one of the most important elections this year, all eyes are on Virginia as polling in the Virginia gubernatorial election continues to show razor thin margins between Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe and Trump-endorsed, far-right candidate Glenn Youngkin.

43] – The Sunrise Movement Baltimore is asking you to Call for the Green New Deal Phonebank. Right now, Democrats are working on a massive climate and jobs bill (the Build Back Better Act / budget reconciliation bill) that could meaningfully bring us towards the Green New Deal. But, at the same time, we know Exxon and their friends are swarming Democratic offices to do everything they can to weaken action to stop the climate crisis. They might have the money, but we have a movement.  We need to pass a climate and jobs bill that meets the scale of the climate crisis, creates millions of good, union jobs, and directs money to communities most impacted by the climate and economic crises.  Phonebank on Wed., Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 7 PM EDT, Fri., Oct. 22 from 5:30 to 7 PM EDT.  Sign up at https://www.mobilize.us/sunrisemovement/event/403248/?utm_source=phonebank.

44] – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal [WA07JP.Outreach@mail.house.gov] is inviting you to join a call on Wed., Oct. 19 at 6:30 PM ET. This is a Telephone Town Hall for you to get updates about what's going on in Congress and to answer your questions live! Sign up at https://jayapal.house.gov/live.

45] – The Union of Concerned Scientists is hosting a virtual event to discuss the Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), a process that develops the administration's approach to US nuclear weapons policy. Join UCS on Wed., Oct. 20 from 7 to 8 PM ET to discuss the importance of the NPR and how to improve US nuclear weapons policy, featuring presentations and Q&A with experts Lynn Rustin, formerly on the Obama National Security Council, and Dr. Steve Fetter, UCS board member. Mustafa Santiago Ali will moderate the discussion. Register for the virtual discussion at https://secure.ucsusa.org/a/2021-10-20-nuclear-posture-review-discussion?contactdata=yo6cpqIP5aCtQCxt03TpMvHyyXkdh8%2bQWjWcjtrcYNu80xv%2fJ%2fDF9nMzAMazhjoNH8j3bqJB46%2fBzN1IO0CQRyuWHO0lz0xb74vQpNXvfa%2bCRVVDvMYBTlioZcwQZlSrK3Q6UU4Q1V%2ftCYMZDAKJdNo1zwHFwUBfm%2brFourmV6ZG%2bWhvvoXhlE%2fffHCIf%2fm8dYsoCNpv6RaKwQsZR%2b23PzbS5J0kYilWCbGrJ0nvbSpYz46uqj5Er%2b66lz3%2fpoJLO3nlpVqRywIivJqkABxF9w%3d%3d&utm_campaign=email&utm_medium=email&utm_source=email&emci=6fdf6ad3-332d-ec11-981f-c896653b9208&emdi=5b7c2f19-342d-ec11-981f-c896653b9208&ceid=1507036.

47] – The Committee for the Republic on Wed., October 20 at 7 PM ET will present its Defender of Liberty Award to Chas Freeman.  RSVP at Events@CommitteefortheRepublic.org.  Sign in to Zoom at https://zoom.us/j/7812458066. Chas was a founding member in 2003 and served as Chairman and brightest ornament until last year when health considerations intervened. The Committee for the Republic is a citizen-based, non-partisan, nonprofit organization founded in 2003. The Committee sponsors speakers monthly on challenges to the American Republic, including the military-industrial complex, too-big-to-fail banks and U.S. competitiveness. 48] – Catch this discussion Solar Gone Wrong: Solar v. Forests: A False Choice on Wed., Oct. 20 from 7 to 8 PM EDT. In southeast Massachusetts on the traditional territory of the Wampanoag, a rare pine barren forest is being clear-cut for solar installations. Massachusetts Peace Action supports massive solar expansion for climate but not through the destruction of ancient and sacred pine forests. This webinar includes perspectives of Indigenous stewards of the land, environmentalists, and citizens working on biodiversity. This is an important forum for all of Massachusetts.
