32] – Jim Zogby [jzogby@aaiusa.org] is inviting you to join him in conversation on Wed., May 12 from 1:30 to 2:15 PM.  The discussion will focus on Israel's Apartheid state & the Human Rights Watch's report.  Zogby will be chatting with Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine Director at Human Rights Watch, about their most recent report, "A Threshold Crossed." See https://www.hrw.org/report/2021/04/27/threshold-crossed/israeli-authorities-and-crimes-apartheid-and-persecution?emci=14e5bd97-97b1-eb11-85aa-0050f237abef&emdi=1b705f8d-69b2-eb11-85aa-0050f237abef&ceid=389907. The piece is especially important because it lays out evidence that Israel is an Apartheid state, and refutes the common arguments used to justify the US' unconditional support for Israel. Also to be seen is his column, "The Big Question Posed by HRW's Report:" https://jameszogby.com/washingtonwatch/the-big-question-posed-by-hrws-reportnbsp?emci=14e5bd97-97b1-eb11-85aa-0050f237abef&emdi=1b705f8d-69b2-eb11-85aa-0050f237abef&ceid=389907. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, this 45 minute film envisions an escalating war between NATO and the USSR resulting a nuclear attack on Great Britain. Originally written for the BBC, the film was deemed too provocative by the British Broadcasting Company.  World renowned film critic Roger Ebert gave the highest praise, and a perfect score, to The War Game: “They should string up bedsheets between the trees and show “The War Game” in every public park. It should be shown on television, perhaps right after one of those half-witted war series in which none of the stars ever gets killed…. it should be shown to the leaders of the world’s nuclear powers, the men who have their fingers on the doomsday button.”

You will also see a video montage and message from the filmmaker himself, Peter Watkins. Joining in will be internationally recognized expert on nuclear weapons, Dr. Ira Helfand, to take your questions and lead a discussion.  Ira Helfand, MD is a member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapon, ICAN, the recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, and Immediate Past President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, the founding partner of ICAN and itself the recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. 39] – Molly Amster [info@jufj.org] wants you to know about a Community Town Hall for Renter Protections on Wed., May 12 at 7:30 PM ET.  Baltimore renters in calling on Mayor Scott and City Council to stop CB 21-0022 from becoming law!  Everyone has a right to safe, stable, affordable housing — but there is a bill on Mayor Scott’s desk that would let a predatory company take advantage of Baltimore renters and undermine their housing security. We have one week to get Mayor Brandon Scott to veto CB 21-0022, the Security Deposit Alternatives bill, which countless tenants, advocates, attorneys, and organizations have rightly called out for the harm it would do to renters if it becomes law.

Baltimore Renters United, a coalition of housing advocates that Jews United for Justice is a member, is hosting a community town hall at 400 E. 32nd St. (at the corner of 32nd and Brentwood, next to where the 32nd St. Farmers Market is held). There will be a series of speakers from the coalition discussing the bill and taking questions, which will be followed by a screening of a short leaked marketing video to landlords that surety bond company Rhino doesn’t want anyone to see. Social distancing guidelines are as follows: all participants are expected to wear a mask and maintain proper social distancing. Hand sanitizer and additional masks will be available. Bring your own chair or blanket for comfort.
