He has spoken in 23 countries on six continents, at the Pentagon, the French National Assembly, the United Nations, the Scottish National Parliament, the U.S. State Department, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Georgetown, the Sorbonne, the U.S. Naval War College, King’s College London, Hamburg University, Nagasaki University, University of Pretoria, and others. 53] -- On Thurs., May 2 at 12:30 PM get over to "Off Ramps from Confrontation in Southern Asia" Book Launch and Discussion at THE STIMSON CENTER, 8th Floor, 1211 Connecticut Ave. NW, WDC 20036.  The nuclear competition among China, India and Pakistan is accelerating with the introduction of new ballistic and cruise missiles, multiple warhead missiles and missile defenses. Border clashes between India and Pakistan persist, as do standoffs between India and China. Diplomacy is dormant. What to do? Stimson's South Asia Program presents a collection of proposals from regional and international experts highlighting creative ways forward in Southern Asia. Stimson Co-founder Michael Krepon will moderate a panel discussion with Saleem Ali, Hannah Haegeland, Sylvia Mishra and Travis Wheeler. See https://www.stimson.org/content/ramps-confrontation-southern-asia-book-launch-and-discussion.

54] – On Thurs., May 2 at 7 PM, see the film “God Knows Where I AM,” an award winning Documentary Wider Film Project by Jedd & Todd Wider, featuring Lori Singer, at the Peace Center of Delaware County, 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, PA with doors open at 6:30 PM for refreshments.  The body of a homeless woman is found in an abandoned farmhouse, and a diary documenting a journey of starvation and the loss of sanity lies next to the body. For nearly four months, Linda Bishop, a prisoner of her own mind, survived on apples and rain water during one of the coldest winters on record. As her story unfolds from different perspectives, we learn about our systemic failure to protect those who cannot protect themselves. It will be followed by a discussion with Dr. William Oberfield, MD, psychiatrist, and Lynn Oberfield, Educator. Directions to the Peace Center and more are at www.delcopeacecenter.org.

55] – On Thurs., May 2 from 7 to 9 PM, attend the Silver Spring Justice Coalition Meeting at Silver Spring United Methodist Church, 8900 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring 20901.  The Silver Spring Justice Coalition formed in the summer of 2018 after the Montgomery County MD police killed Robert White, an unarmed Black man. Robert was a beloved neighbor, the shooting was unjustified, and we have come together to hold police accountable and create a paradigm shift in police/community relations in Montgomery County, MD.  There is a lot to talk about, including the MoCo new police chief selection & Silver Spring Justice Coalition representation; Law Enforcement Trust and Transparency Act; state legislative update, and more. Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/854262408260937/.

56] – On Thurs., May 2 from 7 to 9 PM at Red Emma's Bookstore Coffeehouse, 1225 Cathedral St., Baltimore 21201, BHASKAR SUNKARA PRESENTS "THE SOCIALIST MANIFESTO."  This is one of the most prominent voices on the U.S. Left, who will make a galvanizing argument for why we need socialism in the United States today.  The talk is co-sponsored by Baltimore DSA!  The success of Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign revived a political idea many had thought dead. But what, exactly, is socialism? And what would a socialist system in America look like?

In “The Socialist Manifesto,” Sunkara explores socialism’s history since the mid-1800s and presents a realistic vision for its future. The editor of Jacobin magazine, Sunkara shows that socialism, though often seen primarily as an economic system, in fact offers the means to fight all forms of oppression, including racism and sexism. The ultimate goal is not Soviet-style planning, but to win rights to healthcare, education, and housing, and to create new democratic institutions in workplaces and communities. A primer on socialism for the 21st century, this is a book for anyone seeking an end to the vast inequities of our age. Call (443) 602 7611 or go to https://www.redemmas.org/.
