The DVDs will be shown at Homewood Friends Meetinghouse, 3107 N. Charles St., Baltimore 21218, on the First Friday. After the peace vigil, there will be a potluck dinner. At 7 PM, a DVD will be shown with a discussion to follow. There is no charge, and refreshments will be available. The series theme is WHAT TO DO WHEN GOVERNMENTS VIOLATE THE LAW. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013 EUROPA EUROPA [FRANCE, 1990] This film, directed by Agnieszka Holland had an original German title of “Hitlerjunge Salomon,” i.e. "Hitler Youth Salomon." It is based on the 1989 autobiography of Solomon Perel, a German Jewish boy who escaped the Holocaust by masquerading not just as a non-Jew, but as an elite "Aryan" German. The film stars Marco Hofschneider and Julie Delpy; and Perel appears briefly as himself in the finale. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2013 RENDITION [USA, 2007] This is the first Hollywood film about the CIA's practice of "extraordinary rendition," and Gavin Hood directs an excellent cast: Alan Arkin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Omar Metwally, Peter Sarsgaard, Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon. Witherspoon is the desperate wife of an Egyptian-born chemical engineer. When her husband disappears, she tries to convince government officials there has been some kind of mistake. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2013 THE MESSENGER [USA, 2009] THE MESSENGER is the directorial debut of Oren Moverman, who also wrote the screenplay with Alessandro Camon. The cast includes Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, Jena Malone and Samantha Morton. Foster has returned home from Iraq with both physical and psychic wounds, and is assigned as a Casualty Notification officer. He is partnered with a recovering alcoholic played by Harrelson, and they must go into volatile situations to give notice to the families of fallen soldiers. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2013 BETTER THIS WORLD [USA, 2011] The documentary, by filmmakers Katie Galloway and Kelly Duane de la Vega, hones in on Brad Crowder and David McKay who went to protest at the 2008 Republican National Convention. While there, they are accused of manufacturing (but not using) Molotov cocktails. What unfolds is that an FBI informant, Brandon Darby, sets up the two unsophisticated protesters.
