3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

5] – Brad Hathaway spearheads an effort to sell donated used stamps to raise money for different humanitarian causes around the world. 6] – The ASPCA is in need of cat carriers in its cat room in the adoption center. The organization is also seeking items for the upcoming Shop-a-Paw-Looza, the October online auction. Some ideas would be gift certificates, tickets to sporting and other events, sports memorabilia, travel packages and vacation home rentals.  There is a need for volunteers on the National Mall of U.S. flags to staff the tent and pass out sample national health care cards, collect petition signatures and hand out fliers between the hours of 10 AM and 6 PM. Volunteers are needed to take down the exhibit on the 27th. Then there is a need to watch the exhibit during the off hours - 6 PM to 10 AM. 14] – Compassionate Listening: Healing Our World from the Inside Out, a two-day intensive training by Amy R. Rakusin and Phil Fratesi will be held on Fri. 18] – A vigil for Justice in Palestine/Israel (now in its 8th year) takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM at 19th & JFK Blvd., Philadelphia (across from Israeli Consulate.  It is sponsored by Bubbies & Zaydes (Grandparents) for Peace in the Middle East. 22] – The Maryland Coalition for BGE Reregulation calls on all residential and small business ratepayers to join in the demand for immediate rate relief by signing the petition which will be delivered to the PSC commissioners and the governor.  The Coalition is hosting a press conference and rally on Fri., Sept. 25 from 4 to 6 PM outside the office of the Public Service Commission, Light and Baltimore Sts. 23] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., Sept. 18 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

25] – The Black is Back Social Justice, Peace and Reparations Coalition cordially invites you to join in an anti-war mobilizing meeting on Fri., Sept. 25 at the Institute for Policy Studies, 1112 16th St. NW, Suite 600, WDC 20036, from 6 to 8 PM. 27] – On Fri., Sept. 25 from 7 to 7.30 PM, Gregg Mosson will debut his second book, QUESTIONS OF FIRE (Plain View Press) at the Baltimore Book Festival at the Creative Cafe Stage.  The book is a poet's response to the complex 21st century environment, from work to home to war, in an age dawning with violence. This book offers discoveries won through experience, and illuminating observations of contemporary life.

28] – During a special one-week-only engagement beginning Fri., Sept. 25, “No Impact Man” will be shown at DC's E Street Cinema, 555 11th St. NW, WDC.  The movie traces the quest by Colin Beavan (a.k.a No Impact Man), his wife, and young daughter to live green while maintaining a happy, harmonious home. On Tues., Sept. 29 at 7:45 PM, New Dream's Executive Director Bob Ferris will be on hand to introduce the film & lead a Q and A afterwards. General admission is $10. Colin will be on the road with New Dream Staffer Vincent Kitira and hundreds of others on the Climate Ride, biking from New York City to Washington, DC Sept. 26-30.  

 

29] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 30] – Friends House, 17715 Meeting House Rd., Sandy Spring, MD 20860, hosts a peace vigil every Saturday, 10:30 to 11:30 AM, on the corner of Rt. 108 and Georgia Ave. in Olney, MD.  The next vigil is Sept. 26. Call Chuck Harker at 301-570-7167. 

 

31] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

32] – There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., Sept. 26. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 33] – On Sat., Sept. 26 from 1 to 2 PM, the journal Poems Against War is hosting a panel discussion and reading on the topic of POETRY OF VISION at the Baltimore Book Festival’s Creative Café Stage. Then Gregg Mosson will be the host, starting a 2 PM for a discussion examining the concept of poetry of vision with UMBC professor and poet Piotr Gwiazda, experimental poet Robin Gunkel and Coppin State prof. and Baltimore Review contributing editor Kathleen Hellen. From 2:30 to 3 PM, all including the host will do readings.

35] – Gather on Sun., Sept. 27 from 10 to 11:30 AM at Sheridan Circle, 23rd St. NW and Mass. Ave., WDC for the Institute of Policy Studies Annual Sheridan Circle Memorial Service.  Every year the human rights community, friends, family, colleagues, and supporters gather in remembrance of the tragic assassinations of our comrades, Orlando Letelier and Ronni Karpen Moffitt. On September 21, 1976 agents of the Augusto Pinochet regime planted a car bomb at this location which brutally took the lives but not the memory of two IPS colleagues, who fought for equality and justice through reason, not violence.

36] – The Baltimore Ethical Society meets on Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM in the Congress Hotel, 306 W. Franklin St. for talks by invited speakers, discussions, and fellowship. 40] – Every Sunday until Nov. 3, from 4:30 to 6 PM at the corner of Woodmont and Bethesda Aves., near Barnes & Noble and the Landmark Theaters, there will be a peace vigil organized by Bethesda Friends. Everyone welcome to participate!

44] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  However, the next vigil is scheduled for Mon., Sept. 28.  Call 410-233-0488.

 

45] – Busboys & Poets, http://www.busboysandpoets.com/, 2021 14th St NW, WDC 20009, is hosting Mike Roselle and Josh Mahan, who will discuss and sign their new book on Mon., Sept. 28 from 6:30 to 8 PM.  The book is “Tree Spiker: From Earth First! to Lowbagging: My Struggle in Radical Environmental Action,” and the event is co-sponsored by Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace. Mike Roselle is one of the most controversial figures in the crusade to protect the environment. He has spent over thirty years fighting back against big business, negligent management and the lawless actions of the government itself; Josh Mahan is an environmental journalist and editor. 46] – Baltimore United for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM on Mon., Sept. 28 at the AFSC, 4806 York Road. The BUPJ agenda will focus on planning two events, a town hall meeting at Goucher College where Phyllis Bennis will speak and Rep. Donna Edwards will be invited and a forum to get ready for the legislative session in Annapolis.  As this meeting ends, the Pledge meeting will begin.

 

47] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  However, the next meeting will be Sept. 28, and the agenda will include outreach for the town hall meeting at Goucher, direct action at the White House on Oct. 5 and other antiwar activities.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

48] – On Tues., Sept. 29 at 5:30 PM, Witness Against Torture will continue its weekly vigil, each Tuesday, in Lafayette Park, H and 16th Sts., NW. Contact Helen Schietinger at h.schietinger at verizon.net.

 

49] – There is a vigil to say "War Is Not the Answer" each Tuesday since September 11, 2001 at 4806 York Road. Join this ongoing vigil.  The next vigil is Sept. 29 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

50] – Stop the merger between Constellation Energy and EDF.  Stop Calvert Cliffs 3 by attending a hearing.  NOTICE OF HEARINGS FOR PUBLIC COMMENT--The Parties of Record and Interested Persons in Case No. 9173 can testify. The final hearing is scheduled for Tues., Sept. 29, from 7 to 9:30 PM in the Rotunda, Town Hall of Bel Air, 39 N. Hickory Ave., Bel Air, MD 21014.   Written comments may also be submitted at the public hearing in addition to, or in lieu of, oral comments.

A photo ID will be required for entry.  The Commission asks that the oral comments be limited to 5 minutes.  Written comments also may be filed by Tues., Sept. 29.  The comments shall be addressed to Terry J. Romine, Executive Secretary, Maryland Public Service Commission, William Donald Schaefer Tower, 6 St. Paul Street, 16th Floor, Baltimore, Maryland 21202, and reference “Case No. 9173, Phase II – Public Comment.”[1]

67] The National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance (NCNR) is planning an act of nonviolent civil resistance at the White House on Mon., Oct. 5 -- the week of the 8th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan.  Members of the October 5 coalition include NCNR, Witness Against Torture, Peace Action, War Resisters League, Voices for Creative Nonviolence, World Can't Wait and Atlantic Life Community.  In addition to calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the coalition is calling for ending the occupation of Iraq now, ending the illegal bombing by drones in Pakistan, closing the Bagram prison and ending indefinite detention and torture.  

  Participants will gather at the Supreme Court at 8:30 AM before marching to McPherson Square for a 10 AM legal rally.  Affinity groups will prepare for the visit to the White House.  There will be poets and musicians, and Liz McAlister, lifelong war resister and widow of Philip Berrigan will speak.  October 5 is Phil Berrigan’s birthday.  

 

 At 11:30 AM, there will be a somber procession to the White House.  A request for a meeting with Obama officials will then be made. A failure by the White House to call for an end to the war on the people of Afghanistan will cause the affinity groups to engage in nonviolent civil resistance. .

Sam Wood directed this social comedy with leftist undertones. John P. Merrick (Charles Coburn), the world's richest man, gets word that someone is trying to unionize a department store that he owns. So he changes his name and takes a menial job at the store, the better to catch the union activists.  Once he is subjected to the humiliating treatment afforded his employees, Merrick starts to wise up.  He then spearheads the union movement after discovering how duplicitous his hand-picked executives can be. Jean Arthur, Robert Cummings and Spring Byington as employees of the store help him along.
