25] – Susan Barnett [reelandmealatnewdealcafe@gmail.com] on Mon., Feb. 16 at 6:30 PM wants you to know that Reel and Meal will show The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975. Arrive/Log on by 6:15 PM as the program starts promptly at 6:30 PM. If attending in person, please come to the New Deal Café at 113 Centerway (Roosevelt Center) in Greenbelt. Register at https://tinyurl.com/RnMFeb2026 This month’s film is sponsored by the Greenbelt Black History and Culture Committee.

The film is a 2011 collage of rare, long-lost footage covering the Black Power Movement and the social changes that took place in the ’60s and early ’70s. It’s more a time machine than a history film. Assembled from long-lost Swedish television footage, it splices together interviews and remarks made during one of the most turbulent and transformative periods in American life. The film captures rare, startlingly candid moments with figures who defined the Black Power Movement—Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, and others—speaking not for the record, but in the moment. Decades later, artists and activists shaped by that era, including Erykah Badu, Harry Belafonte, Talib Kweli, Melvin Van Peebles, and Sonia Sanchez, reflect on what it meant then—and why it still matters now. The documentary examines tensions between nonviolent civil rights activism and Black Power nationalism, opposition to the Vietnam War, the government’s covert COINTELPRO campaign, and the heroin epidemic that devastated Black communities. It also traces how the movement helped spark second-wave feminism, gay liberation, and broader struggles for justice.

You are encouraged to enjoy a plant-based meal during the film to participate in socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, and animal safe lifestyle choices. The Reel and Meal at the New Deal Café is a free monthly film series, started in September 2007. For more information about this month’s film, contact Frank Gervasi 301 467 2418 or the Reel and Meal Facebook page:www.facebook.com/reelandmeal

26] – The Campaign for Peace, Disarmament & Common Security [joseph@cpdcs.ccsend.com] on Mon., Feb. 16 at 7 PM ET will host SOCIAL STRIKES: HOW CAN WE USE THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE TO END MAGA TYRANNY? Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_JoPktQCHSSqx5VMlUz7sUw#/registration

Donald Trump and his accomplices are conducting a creeping coup, which is seizing all the powers of the government and concentrating them in the personal will of the president. The consequence is armed attack abroad and armed assault against American cities. Popular opposition is growing and a powerful movement-based opposition is resisting. But what about a worst-case scenario where neither electoral nor non-electoral opposition forestalls a MAGA tyranny? Experience from Poland to the Philippines to South Korea to Puerto Rico has shown that "social strikes" -- including mass strikes, general strikes, and nonviolent popular uprisings -- can overcome tyrannical dictatorships. The Minnesota "Day of Peace and Freedom", has shown the power of a social strike right here in the US.  The speakers are Jeremy Brecher, historian, author and co-founder of the Labor Network for Sustainability; Colleen Rowley, former FBI whistleblower and Minneapolis resident, and Jackson Potter, vice-president of Chicago Teachers Union and leading figure in MaydayStrong. Simone Rothstein [simone.rothstein@jufj.org] is inviting you to join in on Mon., Feb. 16 from 7 to 8:15 PM for a Jews United for Justice Baltimore Action Team meeting on Zoom. Share important and exciting updates on the renters’ rights and immigrant justice campaigns. RSVP at https://jufj.org/event/bat-2-16-26/.

27] – On Mon., Feb. 16 at 7 PM at Rhizome,  6950 Maple St NW, WDC, DC for Palestine presents a film screening of Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk by Sepideh Farsi. 29] –The American Friends of Combatants for Peace [office@afcfp.org] on Tues., Feb. 17 at 1 PM ET are holding a webinar Education Interrupted — How Occupation Is Shutting Down Palestinian Schools. Across the West Bank, schools are operating only a few days a week due to occupation-related policies and withheld funds. Teachers go unpaid, routines collapse, and children are left without consistent access to education. This is not by accident, but by design.  Enjoy a timely conversation with Combatants for Peace, featuring Palestinian and Israeli activists and staff who are raising the alarm about a tactic of Israeli occupation: the systematic disruption of Palestinian education.  The speakers will share firsthand accounts from the ground, including personal stories from educators, parents, and activists living this reality. Together, they will help us understand how occupation is shaping the education crisis and how people in the U.S. and international community can take action in solidarity. RSVP at https://www.afcfp.org/past-events-data/education-interrupted-occupation-of-palestinian-schools

30] – The Union of Concerned Scientists [action@ucs.org] on Tues., Feb. 17 from 2 to 3 PM ET hope you will join in to fight back against federal deregulation. The Trump Administration is rolling back key environmental protections. Join the UCS Action Hour to learn how to defend science-based policies and protect our future. Practice tactics for resisting federal deregulation of public health and environmental safeguards through public participation! Several examples of regulatory fights past and present will be highlighted which will lead to a discussion of tactics for engaging in public comment periods and previewing the issues for 2026.  REGISTER at https://secure.ucs.org/a/2026-2-17-fight-against-deregulation?contactdata=oUD+ktumf4Hlly9XmPL0SMVR6Fc8HwVMGHUZxaV9TQwD5UPx4WzOllpZ3uB4bbuDVJtGOSU+xqn4FtmrdyQy5FWCwvNzJTVvBL5UpKXejCAjRppz7zoTeRl6z9LGGak3iXY3JhIOrXVfQ7oht2wHiR6JkVcAXV+sHEiJJLvnvi18bzioFEhRyEaGNvtE7hqpJxDinOQnX4rmUdSqKYw0j2sKx%2f5dP2Y8fTxaIao10agB1ihrSOub4Zb9F9EfCPTFzasPaAd+BZ5LrlcpS9SXIA%3d%3d&utm_campaign=email&utm_medium=email&utm_source=email&emci=d58f5ded-a906-f111-832e-000d3a18942f&emdi=3f2f5b5e-9507-f111-832e-0022482a9733&ceid=1507036

31] – Join the Baltimore Nonviolence Center on Tues., Feb. 17 from 4:30 to 5 PM ET at 33rd and N. Charles Sts. to challenge President Trump for a long list of illegal executive orders. And now he has invaded Venezuela. Without resistance Trump will undermine our flawed democracy.  Right now Trump wants fascism as the order of the day. Contact Max at Comcast dot net or 410-323-1607.

32] – Grassroots Action Team (via Common Cause) [causenet@commoncause.org] on Tues., Feb. 17 and Thurs., Feb. 19 at 6 PM ET wants you to join a weekly phone bank to key swing senators as Congress negotiates ICE and DHS’s demand for $10 billion.  Mobilize voters to take action against dangerous legislation in state houses and Congress. Focus on the most urgent campaigns that need help. Some of these campaigns may include stopping bills that will make it harder for millions of Americans—especially students, seniors, and veterans—to cast their ballots. Ensure voters across the country to call their elected representatives and make their voices heard. A full training will be provided at the start of each shift! The next phone bank will be on Tues., Feb. 24 at 6 PM ET.  This event will continue through Jan. 12, 2027. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/commoncause/event/758610/?link_id=2&can_id=4b9d4061aec5469758759317ac0f5285&source=email-five-things-you-can-do-right-now-4&email_referrer=email_3077543&email_subject=five-things-you-can-do-right-now&&

3] –  Janice Sevre-Duszynska needs some assistance in archiving her activist material.  If you are interested in this project, contact Max at 410-323-1607 or mobuszewski2001 at Comcast dot net.

4] – Barry Lee Burnside, a gaggle of great writers and copy editors are making available “A Bag of Snakes: Selected Writings on Prisons and the Death Penalty by Murphy Davis and Eduard Loring. Edited by Barry Lee Burnside.” Ed indicates the book will be available for sale on April 13, and is asking you to pre-order your copy. Your donation will provide a needed financial boost for the printing costs. The suggested donation is $20 for one copy; and $30 for your copy and an additional copy for a prisoner or someone in need. Any donation is appreciated. More or less you will receive the book.  Barry and the team have spent over two years putting this book together. It begins with outlines and notes found in the boxes of materials Murphy left when she ascended. The work is a work of love, and all involved are proud of the fruit borne by seeds nourished in good soil.

To order by postal mail, make your check to Open Door Community.  Send it to Open Door Community, PO Box 10980, Baltimore 21234.  For any questions, contact David Payne at 404-290-2047 or davidpayne@opendoorcommunity.org.

5] – Another book to consider purchasing is Male Supremacy in the Catholic Church: An Insider’s View by Roy Bourgeois. His new book is both memoir and position-paper, and it makes the case that the Roman Catholic Church is a corrupt system that spits out truth-tellers. The crime he was excommunicated for was attending the ordination ceremony of Janice Sevre-Duszynska in Lexington, Kentucky, in August 2008. The ordination was under the auspices of the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests.  The Vatican’s response has been to excommunicate any woman who has the audacity to see herself as a priest equal to a male priest. You can purchase a copy from Amazon or by Kindle.

Here are two quotes to contemplate: “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men. She is to keep silent.” – Timothy 1, 2:12-13.  “If the patriarchy that dominates the church is not dismantled and women are not treated as equals, the church will continue to diminish and, eventually, die.” – Roy Bourgeois.

6] – William Barry [billbarry21214@gmail.com] has a request. As the country begins to celebrate our 250th anniversary, our history is complicated but one thing is certain--labor history is always deleted. So he created the MD250 Labor History Project, and hopes you will participate by sending in labor history materials, and by sharing it with your friends, as part of creating a union movement. Go to https://www.md250laborhistory.org/

"We are either part of the solution or part of the problem." "The only reason an organization has dead wood is that management either hired dead wood or it hired live wood and killed it."   - W. Edwards Deming

8] – The Baltimore Ethical Society on Sun., Feb. 15 at 10:30 AM will host a hybrid platform: Is Humanity Alone in the Milky Way? Rob Palmer, self-described skeptical and atheist activist, is a retired aerospace engineer. Over 100 of his articles have been published by Skeptical Inquirer and other skeptical and humanist media. Rob writes about contemporary skeptical issues and has interviewed many individuals for his Skeptical Inquirer column. Half of Americans believe extraterrestrials are routinely visiting Earth in their spaceships, and many are sure that Earth’s governments are engaged in a global cover-up. Scientists and skeptics generally disagree with such claims, but due to the vast number of exoplanets now known to exist, many from those respected communities often assert that extraterrestrial civilizations are likely and perhaps even abundant in our galaxy, and it’s just a matter of time until first contact. In this presentation, Rob Palmer will discuss whether this is a reasonable position to hold, and explore the contrary possibility – that our civilization may be an anomaly, surprisingly rare or even alone in the Milky Way. RSVP at https://www.meetup.com/bmorethical/events/312431831/?eventOrigin=group_upcoming_events

9] – On Sun., Feb. 15 from 11 AM to 1 PM, get over to Severna Park High School, 60 Robinson Road, Severna Park 21146. Do sign waving on the corners of Benfield, Evergreen and Robinson Road. Let this administration know that they’re not running the country the way the people want. The cruelty has to stop. This is a local Indivisible event which will also Sundays, March 1 and March 15. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/dfadcoalition/event/896032/?followup_modal_context=organization_newsletter_custom_recommendations

10] – Doctors against Genocide [leadership@doctorsagainstgenocide.org] are hosting an urgent webinar bringing together public health analysis, lived testimony and media accountability grounded in the ongoing destruction of life and healthcare and the moral duty to tell the truth. On Sun., Feb. 15 at noon, check out From Iran to Gaza: Rebuilding Moral Clarity, and Healthcare under Siege. Action is the Antithesis of Despair. Register at https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_aUUzycRDSwaem750Nc6iFg

Hear from Othman Alagha about the Gaza healthcare system: pre-crisis capacity, crisis collapse, and what recovery would require post-crisis. Other commentators are Wasim Said who collects testimonies from people in Gaza documenting the ongoing genocide being committed by Israel; Samira Mohyeddin on the necessity of moral clarity; and Mohamad Azzami, Palestinian refugee from Jaffa.

11] – The MAPA Ed. Fund [info@masspeaceaction.org] on Sun., Feb. 15 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM ET hopes you will participate in Violence, Love and Hope in Israel-Palestine. This will be a virtual event featuring a conversation with human rights lawyer and executive director of the Public Committee against Torture, Sari Bashi.  She lives in a mixed Israeli-Palestinian family, which is the subject of her new memoir, Upside-Down Love. Her book, a love story in two voices, describes how she and her Palestinian spouse met, fell in love and made it work, against the odds and against Israeli law. Sari will share her perspective on the ceasefire in Gaza, the escalating violence in the West Bank, and the opportunities emerging for transformative change. Sari is also a co-founder and former executive director of Gisha-Legal Center for Freedom of Movement, the Israeli human rights organization promoting freedom of movement for Palestinians in Gaza.

12] – Indivisible Baltimore County [contact@indivisible-baltimorecounty.org] on Sun., Feb. 15 from 1 to 2:30 PM, help keep ICE out of Baltimore County.  Recent reporting indicates that the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has leased office space in Hunt Valley, across from the Hunt Valley Towne Centre, which has led to speculation about a potential U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence at 201 International Circle, though federal officials have not confirmed plans for the space. Baltimore County officials, including the County Executive’s Office, have said they are seeking clarity on what functions might occur there and have called for a County Council session to address community concerns and discuss possible legislation related to immigration enforcement uses. Join together on the sidewalks along the northeast side of Shawan Road to show Baltimore County, Maryland, and the Trump Regime that we don't want ICE here.... period! RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/indivisiblebaltco/event/889116/

13] – On Sundays, including Feb. 15, from 1 to 3 PM ET at 15202 Major Lansdale Blvd., Bowie 20716, join Indivisible Bowie for a Visibility Brigade sign wave on the pedestrian bridge over Route 50. If you can't make the full time, no worries, come when you can! Help bring attention to important issues and let your neighbors and commuters know they are not alone in fighting back against authoritarianism. This event will continue through March 8.

Parking is behind the Hampton Inn in the old theatre lot, please look for the sign. Follow the paved path through the chain-link fence, then turn left onto the pedestrian trail to reach the bridge. Approximately a 4-minute walk. RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/dfadcoalition/event/873914/?followup_modal_context=organization_newsletter_custom_recommendations

14] – Calling All Resistance Knitters/Crocheters to join the Melt the Ice Hat Knit-In, hosted by Allies for Democracy on Sundays, including Feb. 15, from 2 to 4 PM ET in the common area at The Shops at Kenilworth, 800 Kenilworth Dr., Towson 21204. In the 1940s, Norwegians quietly defied Nazi occupation by knitting and wearing red, pointed hats with tassels. A simple garment became an act of protest. Today, Minnesota knitters are reviving that tradition—and they need more hats. Join in to knit and crochet Melt the Ice Hats. These red hats will be sent to Needle & Skein yarn shop in Minnesota and distributed to protesters. This event will continue through March 8. Bring red yarn and needles or a hook if you have them. Knit and crochet patterns may be found on Ravelry. Beginners welcome, and supplies may be available to share.  RSVP at https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/899993/?followup_modal_context=nonexclusive_newsletter_more_events_of_type

This is an invitation to an Online Film Salon. Register to join the discussion & receive access to the films: Tinyurl.com/VFHL-February2026

Once you register, you will get a confirmation email from Zoom with a link to the meeting and a link to watch the film.  Watch the film at your convenience before the event.  Then join in with your thoughts and questions for the speakers at the Q&A discussion on Feb. 15 at 3 PM ET.

16] – Progressive Democrats of America [info@pdamerica.org] on Sun., Feb. 15 at 4 PM ET, attend the weekly Town Hall.  It will feature legendary public education organizer Jitu Brown. Brown has spent decades organizing alongside parents, students, and educators to defend and strengthen public education. Last year, he was elected to the newly established Chicago School Board. Since 1995, education policy in Chicago had been set by the mayor rather than by an elected school board, a policy change and win for democracy that Brown helped make happen.  Brandee Marckmann is a parent, community advocate, and candidate for the San Francisco School Board. She is the founder of the SF Education Alliance and helped stop a disastrous school closure plan. 17] – Feb. 15 from 7 to 8 PM ET, check out virtually How You Can Drop ICE from Your Campus. Cut off ICE’s corporate enablers — starting on our campuses. Donald Trump’s deportation machine depends on private corporations for technology to track, places to sleep, cars to drive, planes to fly, and parking lots to stage. Colleges — and the students, faculty, and staff they rely on — have real leverage over the companies providing these services to ICE through purchasing, partnerships, and public legitimacy. The fastest way to shrink ICE’s capacity is to cut off its corporate support: push the schools to stop funding and normalizing ICE collaborators.  Hear how organizers in Minneapolis and beyond moved from defense to offense—picking a few winnable targets and escalating sustained, nonviolent pressure that hits brands and bottom lines. 18] – There was a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  However, the Pentagon police, presumably on the orders of President Trump, have made it impossible to protest on the reservation. Now it will take place on the corner of S. Fern and Army Navy Dr. in Arlington, VA.  The next vigil is Feb. 16, and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Email artlaffin@hotmail.com or call 202-882-9649.

By car from D.C. area, take 395 South and get off at Exit 8A-Pentagon South Parking. Take slight right onto S. Rotary Rd. at end of ramp and right on S.
